Huge hailstone

Good morning evernone,

Southern Kansas was blasted by huge hailstorms Saturday.

On Saturday morning some severe t-storms were rolling across portions of South Central and SE Kansas.  These storms were producing baseball and even softball size hail.  You can see the measurement on the right of 4.25 inches.  Look below at the picture:

This is just a huge hailstone, or I guess we should take the stone part out of it.  So, this is just huge hail.  What do you think?

There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms south and west of us today.  We will blog later about the set-ups for this week.

I am going to the cancer survivors rally at 12:30 this afternoon on the Plaza.  It is at the Bloch Cancer Survivors park on the west side of the Plaza. Come out and celebrate today.

Today in Kansas City, we have plenty to celebrate. At 12:30 p.m. we’ll be rededicating the newly renovated Richard and Annette Bloch Cancer Survivors Park at 47th Street and Roanoke Road, just west of the Country Club Plaza. The park, opened in 1989, was the prototype for a network of more than 20 such parks in the United States and Canada.

The 23rd annual Celebration of Life Rally will follow at 1 p.m. with music, entertainment, refreshments and more. Cancer survivors who attend will get special T-shirts, buttons identifying how many years they’ve survived, prize drawings, and the sheer joy of sharing their success with others who are battling cancer now or providing support.

Gary, You mentioned last week that severe weather season should end by June 15. I need something to look forward too.... do you still think the worst of the storms should diminish by then? Really very tired from all this severe weather that has been around us, and I am worried our number is up this week. I'm sure folks to the north and south of us have had enough of it!

-----------------

The jet stream will continue its gradual overall decrease in intensity, but it isn't until around June 15th that it weakens enough to lower the tornado threat in our area.  Thunderstorms will still be possible through the summer, but the severe potential lessons, while the flooding potential continues if the fronts keep coming like I think they will.

Gary, just to let you know that I rejoice with you in your surviving cancer!!!  Although I can't make it to the celebration today, I'll be there in spirit.  May you have many, many more healthy years to keep on being our most accurate and dependable meteorologist and to be an enjoyer of life as you are.  Your attitude and enthusiasm are very contagious.

May the best come your way!  Edna

At first glance that thing looks like something you would see hanging from somebody"s house in December---too bad its the exact opposite!

I'm very anxious to see the setup for Thursday. I am both nervous and excited at the same time--its quite the juxtaposition! As its been previously mentioned--there is still some strongly worded comments out there in terms of our area.

Well at least today will be great.  I will be taking my 2 year old to the pool today for the first time this season! She's pumped and can't wait! And neither can I after spending all day yesterday out in the sun replacing windows....today will be all about fun!

Not really one big hailstone - rather a bunch of little hailstones stuck together.  But I guess there's not a whole lot of difference if you get hit on the head with one.

Gary,
Enjoy the celebrations at the survivors park!  I would love to attend next year with my folks. :)

That is one huge hailstone!  That size will definitely do window and roof damage.

from the SPC for Thursday:
A SIGNIFICANT SEVERE WEATHER OUTBREAK IS EXPECTED FROM PORTIONS OF
THE UPPER MIDWEST SWWD INTO THE SRN PLAINS.  A DYNAMIC UPPER TROUGH
WILL DEVELOP EWD INTO THE CNTRL U.S. WITH AN ASSOCIATED SURFACE LOW
MOVING NEWD FROM THE CNTRL PLAINS INTO UPPER MS VALLEY.  RAPID AIR
MASS DESTABILIZATION WILL OCCUR FROM ALONG SURFACE LOW AND WARM
FRONT SWD AHEAD OF COLD FRONT AND DRYLINE.  THIS INSTABILITY

Stacy,
The word of the week is "crazy!"  Hopefully it wil settle down.  I started a journal since I thought it would be easier for me to keep people updated. :)  The link is in my profile so if you or anyone else missed it.  It's there. :)

I have not gotten to watch the coverage of the Universal Studios fire.  In fact, I rarely get a chance to watch TV these days.

I am still waiting to see how things pan out for Thursday.  It's still too far out to get excited about it.

TF,
Yea mine is the same way.  I live in a townhouse that is split level and has no real basement.  Both places to go, in closets, both have connecting walls to the garage so I don't feel too safe in those.  I usually go to my parents house but they are in Phoenix this week so I am on my own with 3 kids to keep safe...

Jeri-

I do understand your point about the "gloom and doom" points being made around the internet. However let me make a few points....

I think Thursday's setup is slighty different than last weeks or ANY setup that the KC area has experience this season. I have not had time recently to update my blog because I have been soooo busy. I have either been traveling for work or been out chasing nearly everyday for the past 2-3 weeks. I will try to update it tonight or tomrrow as I have shared much as the same chasing sucess during the latter half of May that many other chasers have experienced as well.

Anyway, back to Thursday.

Its different for many reasons in my opinion. First off, the SPC who I feel is usually pretty conservative when using strong wording has been mentioning severe weather outbreak  5-7 days in advance. That is so very rare to see happen.

Secondly, Gary mentioned last week as well when he saw the GFS and ECMWF come into line with the LRC. He jumped onto the severe weather potential as well almost a week out. We all know it takes some pretty enticing evidence for him to get excited this far out.

Lastly, with the models the past few days, they have been combining June like instability with March/April type storm strength and wind fields. Models are all we have to go by at this point, and they have been spelling trouble for a few days now. I think it is 95% likely at this point that a major severe weather outbreak will occur in and around the central plains area on Thursday. Add on to that, I know that the National Weather Service offices in Pleasant Hill, Topeka, and Wichita have all mentioned significant severe weather on Thursday.

Now will this cover every part of the metro area? Probably not. However, at this point, I think its fair to certianly discuss the potential for an outbreak of severe weather near the metro for thursday.

Kristi and Bewild. I have a somewhat Interior Hallway that connects the Living room and Kitchen with the 3 bed rooms, the bathroom and the downstairs entrance.

My Garage isnt real safe because of alot of cutting grass supplies, tools, and alot of camping equipment. I have a Real Small closet in the hallway with blankets that are there. If my neightbors arnt there during a tornado event then this is our last resort.

Apparntly the Bullseye for Mondays severe weather is over us now. There talking about a MCS and supercell developement as well as some tornadoes for Monday. Very Interesting to watch

Thursday will be Filming day where I will be filming storms that go by our house. since we live near waterworks lake we will probabily go there or around Frisco and film with a tiny camcorder and see if we pick up anything. Hopefully we will see something but hopefully not a Tornado. Thursday is basically what appears to be a Tornado Blitz. So hopefully not alot of damage.

That's ok Adam. Again we will not have severe weather Monday afternoon or Tuesday because I am moving. Secondly, I am scheduled to work Thursday, which would leave my folks at the new place on their own. My mom is very, very sick and probably shouldn't have made the drive out but she made the effort to try to help with the move. I, too, will be in a split level duplex with my "basement" being the bedrooms and laundry room downstairs. It will now have to be the large crawlspace which is the most interior spot I will have. Hopefully, she will be able to get in there. So Thursday concerns me alot because they have never dealt with this kind of stuff. I may have to call in sick because I am not sure she could handle the stress of anything major given her poor health.
