Developing MCS, June 2 update

Good morning NBC Action Weather Bloggers,

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH until 2 PM (we will be tracking this all morning during the Today Show, and on our 11 AM Mid-Day broadcast, the blog will be updated soon)

A complex of thunderstorms (weak MCS) is tracking across southern Nebraska early this morning.  This area of thunderstorms and rain is heading right towards us, but will it hold together?  It was weakening, but a warm front is approaching and new thunderstorms may form this morning.  Look below at the 7:10 AM radar imgage.  The red cells are brand new thunderstorms within the past hour.  They are moving east.  If this does become a new MCS, then it would likely turn southeast right towards us.  We will know if this is heading our way soon.  Right now I still place it at a bit better than 50/50 that it grows and moves in later this morning.

On Saturday morning some severe t-storms were rolling across portions of South Central and SE Kansas.  These storms were producing baseball and even softball size hail.  You can see the measurement on the right of 4.25 inches.   Look below at the picture:

Our region has avoided the worst so far this season.  There are some significant severe weather possibilities this week, and we will go into more detail later this morning.  Severe weather season almost always shuts down by the middle week of June, so time is running out on the energy available for tornadic threats.  Flooding and hail potential continues into the summer, but the jet stream will continue its shift northward and weaken as we approach the third week of June.  But, we aren't there yet.

Hey Gary, I'm debating booking a tee time for 1 p.m. this afternoon. Last night I thought I wouldn't even consider booking one for today but things aren't looking as impressive as I thought they would for us getting a direct blow. To book or not to book that is the question?

--------------

David,

Look to the northwest.  The MCS is what we will be tracking this morning.  It seems to be intensifying right now.

So do you think there is any chance I could get in a round of golf from 1 -5 p.m. today? 10%, 25%, 50%, 100%? What do you think?

--------------------

David,

I am at just above 50% that this complex grows and moves in.  The timing is still in question.  We should know a lot more in about one hour.

My weather radio just went off on my nightstand...it is so loud! t got me up though (which is the pint, i guess!). According to the NWS and SPC, the severe weather threat may include a lot of wind when this comes our way. Bow echo event, maybe? It looks like whatever it comes as, it will be only a small area.

----------

Roberto,

The big question is will it turn southeast and miss us to the west, or turn right over us?  We should know within two hours.

To see the radar, you have to enter in the data "polling" site. If you check out the help forums, or grlevelxstuff.com forums, I think they have the url that you need to enter to get the data. Personally, I use GR Level 3, and just get the data from the NWS.

Kelly,
I have to back Andrew up on this one. GrLevelx radar are the way to go. Storm Predator is just about worthless. You get the same thing from weather underground.

The storms seem to be breaking apart.  Do you anticipate that they will continue to break up, or will those individual cells intensify?  Is this thing dying down or building up?

5kckmartins:  Make sure it is not a bell looking icon.  That is simply a sleep alarm.  You need the speaker looking icon.  It is on page 10 of the manual.  Here is the link again to the manual.....http://www.midlandradio.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=3104

Looking at the radar loop, is there a small ULL developing? Because I see a little rotation when looping.

I would really prefer to miss the hail myself.  Anyone see the hail core west of Manhattan?  That storm has baseball size hail in it.

There does seem to be a bit of cyclonic twisting to the radar echoes, centerd around the most intense cell now just SW of Manhattan.

And with that, it's starting to thunder pretty good in western Shawnee.  Dark enough now, I had to turn the lights on in the home office.

Softball sized hail confirmed near Manhattan just reported on 49 ABC from Topeka! They have sounded the sirens there because of the hail size!

Not unusual to get lightning in the anvil well ahead of a complex of severe thunderstorms.  The lightning is probably very frequent out around Manhattan right now.

I am not surprised, Brian.  That cell just SW of Manhattan is nasty looking on radar.  I hope that motorists on I-70 can get off and see shelter.

The hail core with the storm near Manhattan should be hitting I-70 in the next few minutes.  Hope drivers can find an underpass or place to shelter their vehicles!

5kckmartins:  It confuses me a bit, because if you want alert mode without the constant broadcast, all you need on the screen is the NOAA icon.  The speaker icon is for continual broadcast from the NWS.  When a watch or warning is issued via NWS, as long as you have the NOAA icon on, you should receive both text and audible alert.  uhmmm.  I might not have helped you too much. Jim in Clinton ps. if I think of anything else, I will let you know.

Holy *** softball size, that's extreme.  That could kill people in the open and severely damage your vehicle.  Hope that misses KC.

Now there appears to be some cyclonic twisting to the storm just NE of Emporia, and velocity mode indicates some weak rotation in that area.

It looks to me like the big storms are going to slide to the southwest of the metro. Lots of lightning and thunder here though. I can't figure that out. There aren't any thunderstorms near us, but there sure is a lot of lightning. But no big storms for us, I think.

David
P.S. I also have live radar :P http://weather.kskoellers.com/radar/radar.shtml
