Severe Thunderstorms on Monday morning

Good morning bloggers,

Baseball size hail has been reported with the thunderstorms out to our west.  These are big thunderstorms with hail, and damaging winds the main threat.  But, most of us will only have MCS rain with a lot of thunder.  Look at the MCS below:

Wow, pretty impressive.  We will track these thunderstorms as they move in.  The leading edge is near Topeka at 10 AM.  They should arrive and affect some of us between now and 1 PM, and then they will move off to the east.  This will affect the surface set-up for later today and tonight.  We will update the blog as the thunderstorms move in.

Meteorologist Brett Anthony is tracking this on NBC Action News.  Watch our 11 AM newscast for details.  Remember our new Midday newscast is on from 11 AM until noon.

I need help with my weather radio--any comments-- I purchased the new midland version at price chopper just a month and a half ago.  I'd had an old one that went off for every county all the time and wanted to just program for clay and jackson.  For clay and jackson, I found the following codes to enter in:  029047 and 029095.  I've noticed for the past few sthstorm or tornado watches, its not lighting up the watch orange colored button.  Like for right now-severe thunderstorm watch til 2pm and it has no light indicated and reads "no message".  I really need this to work properly--especially before the fear of thursday's weather.  Any suggestions??

This looks awfully familar to the 1984 tornado outbreak in Iowa.
the 12z Euro was catching on to a slightly slower and a bit further south trend with the upper system...and this was seen on the latter periods on the ETA. This would support a more active tornado outbreak for Nebraska, Iowa, and possibly sections of N/C Kansas...and later into W. Missouri. This looks like a classic dual threat of intense tornadic supercells on the warm front and dryline. If the 850mb flow veers as much as hinted, this could bring the most dangerous tornado threat to much of Iowa....still am thinking this may end up similar to the nasty tornado outbreak on 6/7/84. The forecasted 00z sfc low position will be very close to where it was that evening...a 990mb low near Sioux City IA. This is the pattern recognition that I was able to find this closely resembling.

By definition, a severe thunderstorm is a thunderstorm that contains any one or more of the following three weather conditions:

Hail that is 3/4 of an inch or greater in diameter

Winds 58 miles per hour or greater

Tornadoes

Think on a blog that people without your "knowledge" look for current weather information it is irresponsible to say "there is no way that Tstorms around us will be tornadic"

Most  thunderstorm are capable of producing a tornado, and everyone should be aware of that possibility and watchful of the weather.

Looking at the SRV, those TVS's shown seem rather aggressive.  I am not seeing the couplets...I do see how from the composite view, it could be surmised, but I think that is more of a result of the super reflectivity.

As these are becoming more rooted in the boundary level, I think its worth watching for rotation, but right now..these seem like BIG hail and BIG rain makers.  Not to mention quite a bit of electricity it seems...

explaning the vortex signature -- the purple triangle:

the storm is rotating, but well above the earth's surface:

the NWS can tilt the radar at several different angles to scan the entire storm.  The rotating part of the storm appears to be at one of the steeper tilts, well above the earth's surface.

If the scans at the lower tilts start to indicate rotation, or if spotters notice any suspicious lowering of clouds...then a tornado warning will be issued

TyndallFlowers, reading comprehension ftw.  I already stated I was missing shingles from the last, and only event Kansas City has seen this year.  I KNOW what it's like to be in severe weather.  I know it can be scary, but I also know it's entirely unreasonable to cower in fear everytime there's a rumble of thunder.  I mentioned people who have posted here for a long time, although less than I've been around, and inserted parts of what they generally believe about weather.  I'm not some n00b on here who comes here wishing for severe weather to irritate people.  I'm a 39 year old man who loves severe weather and won't be told I can't state as much.  I'm no meteorologist but I likely know more than 80% of the people on this board.  And to continue the analogy, just because a batter hits one ball over the fence during a season, if his batting average is .125, he's still in a slump therefore, I don't need to move.  Thank God, that would be an inconvenience on a showery day like today.

LOL, I'll take a hug. Funny thing is we have a noon siren that sounds..it is the tornado siren. It was nearly pitch black and the tornado siren went off...well we thought it was for a actual tornado cause it was black and black could be here. Then I looked at the time and realized it only went off once and it was for the "lunch siren"....we started laughing and then bam...hail all over the place and it just kept coming. We stopped laughing then. Hey Kristi I will need help downloading my pictures...can ya help a girl out. I sure hope the electricity does not go off.

Olathe is on the outskirts of the northern outflow of the Ottawa storm..not too bad there either...

More to think about for the folks to the south and east.  Not thinking this is all done as more likely will develop..but for now..we can have our lunches in peace...

This is a nasty MCS..and for that it has very strong inflow and outflow.  I can totally understand the hurricane wind outflow and the wind advisory inflow.

As mentioned above, as these boundaries are set and in the proximity of the warm front along with very moist unstable air...thus the moderate risk for the area.

While this part may be over for most of us, more development is possible.

Jeremy - no suprise on that storm...it has some very nice dynamics to work with.
