Round #1 of Thunderstorms Fading

Good early afternoon,

Gary and I tracked the severe thunderstorms all morning on NBC Action News Midday and NBC Action Weather Plus.  The thunderstorms are falling apart as of 1pm but creating strong winds as they collapse.  A high wind warning is in effect until 4pm this afternoon for many metro counties.  We have had several reports of damaging hail, some said to be the size of baseballs and golfballs.  In fact, Golfball sized hail broke windsheilds in Linn county earlier today.  We also had wind gusts over 70 mph in some places and flash flooding, closing some roads in rural areas earlier today.  This morning's thunderstorms stopped the movement of a warm front toward metro KC.  The front could be the focus for more thunderstorms to develop tonight and move overhead.  I have tried to include a couple graphics but they are not uploading.  "There's a glitch"  We welcome any pictures you have or rainfall totals.  Here on the plaza we got a tenth of an inch.  Hard to believe but that is all.  I am sure some of you have a lot more in the rain gauges.

Have a great afternoon and be sure to watch NBC Action News at 5 & 6 for the latest information.

Brett

All is calm here in Paola, we have dodged another severe weather bullet.  I got nervous when the skies turned very dark grey so I took all 3 dogs to the bathroom (only place without windows).  I kept listening to the weather radio but just didn't think we were really going to get any significant hail.  Growing up in north central kansas, and weathering many hail storms, I remember the skies turning green when it was going to hail.  No green skies here and no hail in Paola.  We did get some heavy rain briefly and a little wind but I doubt it ever got over 30 mph.  I hate rain but I'll take it over hail any day.  I hope the storms are over for today.

JP - more likely than not, what you will see is outflow boundaries.  The best way to see the warm front in my opinion is watching the surface obs over a broader area.

Lillyana - on the same topic, you ask why these other storms formed...storms love to form on outflow boundaries, and as this MCS continues to collapse, boundaries are being thrown out away from the storm.

Radar/sat, and surface obs are the best tools right now.

DPannell I'm in Osawatomie & we got hammered!  My brother lives in Paola & he said they didn't get anything.

But here we have hail all over the ground, looks like snow.   We had a huge branch of a tree in our backyard split & fall between us & our neighbor's houses.   When it hit I thought for sure it was a tornado, the whole house shuddered!

The road out front had water running down it up to the curb it looked like a small river.  Reminded me a bit too much of last year's flooding down here.

Then there was/is this weird fog.  I'm thinking it must be from the hail, but it looked freaky.

I got some pics I'll try to get more, but I'm just happy none of us were hurt.  It was pretty hairy there for a while!

Good grief, no shortage of moisture to work with this week...  77 degree dewpoints being recorded in NE Oklahoma.

Looking at the surface obs, its hard to find a clear line on the warm front..the MCS screwed up  the boundary a bit...but would say it is still just south of KC and tapering further south further east.

Best way to find it is starting near the surface low and working east through Central KS..then you can kinda draw it out along and just south of where the complex is..

Atleast..that is what I think...

Kristi/Shawnee Mike, you both are working too hard with that many tabs open…LOL.  I guess I have gotten lazy normally only checking radar with its associated modes and the SPC site for meso discussions/warnings/watches/storm reports.

Here soon, I will have all that integrated on my site so that I can go to one place to get all I need to track and forecast storms.  I am experimenting more and more with the NWS RSS feeds and other NOAA RSS feeds.

Now, when it comes to mid term forecasting from 6 hrs to 3 days, yeah…I seem to chew up many different tabs as I like to have a window open for each level of the atmosphere 300/500/700/850/950 and the surface maps along with two or three models and my favorite three composites to boot.

LOL.

In downtown Gardner we had lots of lightning, flooding rains, a little bit of small hail, and some gusty winds.  It was very dark outside and the heavy rain lasted about an hour.  The water was deep enough to get inside some cars parked in a low area of the parking lot near my location, and water on Hwy 56/Main Street was up over the curbs (as the water receded, you could see where the "waves" deposited debris several feet back from the curb).  I watched cars driving by and very few slowed down--didn't see any wrecks, but a couple of vehicles looked like they were close to losing control.  You should never drive that fast through water that deep.

Now it's sunny and breezy, so things are starting to dry up quickly.

We are supposed to be having a swim party at 5:30 tonight but can reschedule it if we need to.  What are the chances for storms around that time?

I ran home at lunch time to check on my puppy (and to make sure he hadn't torn anything up in the midst of the storms!) At 87th & Antioch in Overland Park, we had approx. .4 of rain. Unknown if we had hail; I don't recall seeing any where I work in Olathe, and that's only 7 miles south of where I live, but 7 miles can be a long way in meteoroligical terms!

I did speak to my husband who was traveling from Rich Hill, Missouri, to Ft. Scott, Kansas, and he said that he got hailed on twice, and his truck (a Ford with a box on the back of it) probably has dents in it. But, when he got to Ft. Scott about 40 minutes ago, the sun was coming out!

I know there are some TWC bashers out there, but the station really doesn't do a bad job.  It's kind of like the Microsoft bashers or the "Fox news is the only balanced news station" sayers.  Why do do most say those things?  Because somebody else said it.  Kind of like the "John Kerry is waffler" saying in 2004.  I saw interviews with tons of people who were quoted as saying it.  When they were asked for a specific instance, not one could come up with an example.
TWC does a pretty good job.  However, it has to do things on a national level, not a local level.  It uses one weather station in a city, not multiple stations.  It can't compare with the local weather stations on a local level.  If you asked the local stations to do the same thing on an overall national level, they couldn't compete either.
So rather than join the "bash TWC because somebody else said it" groupies, let's get back to the weather here.

G-Man: Admittedly, its out of our area...but why is there no dryline storm risk today?

72 dewpoint in Hays, 67 in Garden City, 27 in Amarillo, 34 in Lubbock. You'd think that distinct of a dryline would be quite a storm initiator. Is there no jet stream energy? What's the deal?

Here is something you don't see everyday...

Check out the outflow boundaries/[gravity waves?] coming out of the MCS in northern MO.

Matt P - you crack me up.  I will leave the argument as stated, but seems counter intuitive to have faith and interest in a presentation of a national view when most people seem to be most interested in weather in their backyard...

LOL

Matt,
Any serious weather enthusiast knows that TWC cannot be relied upon.  TWC used to have great coverage.  But I think that people got tired of too many Storm Stories and When Weather Changed History whennever there is/was severe weather breaking out.  I rarely watch TWC because it is not dependable.  Besides I have satellite TV and TWC is not great for that.  If you like it, fine.  But there are many people who don't.  No one was bashing... just wondering what was going on with the station when all the severe weather was going on.

Tyler,
Watch that area of storms over north-central MO...  You could possibly get in on the action.  Did you see the hail pics on WIBW.com?  They were incredible!

Did you all see the pic of the hail in Pleasanton KS?  Unreal!  I am assuming Monica took that pic.

Butler had 2.25 inches of rain in about 20 minutes.  No power.  The tree tops in my parents yard are gone.  Took about 30 minutes with a chain saw to make a path up the driveway.  These trees are extremely old - very large.  Dad said it turned black but they only had pea size hail at their house.

Just for grins, I did force myself to weather.com, and found the update for Overland Park to be nearly an hour and a half ago.

Anyway, it likely is fine for the average consumer.  They seem to be doing well as a company and likely put in enough to satisfy the majoritiy of their consumers.

Why is every year unique if you accept the premise that the LRC is itself defined by recurring patterns?----QUESTION FROM KCWXGUY'S BLOG and here's my answer.
FIRST ONE HAS TO ACCEPT THE PREMISE OF THE LRC, WHICH I DON'T BELIEVE IT'S NOT ACCURATE FOR MORE THAN 60 DAYS.  Second, every year is obviously unique.  There is no year in recorded history where every day with temps and precip perfectly matched.  There are years with similar trends and a trained person with a lot of time, can compare and come up with the same results as the LRC tries to do.  The LRC definately has the upper hand in setting a trend.  LR forecasters don't particularly care about the day to day.  It's more like will it be a wet summer, etc.
On Lezaks's blog, the LRC doesn't seem as important to blogger with the other 9 months of the year and Gary gets slammed.
It's my suggestion is the LRC is correct if used as a general trend and that general trend has been correct.  It's my contention that if it snowed, rained, or stormed on a particular day predicted by the Action Team is bordering on mere coincedence associated with the general trend.
By the way, the first crest of the MO River happened today...expect this to be the first of several... Based on the trend of 1993.

Scott, if I want I to see a local radar of storms back east where my mother lives, I won't see it locally.  However, I will see it if I look at weather.com or TWC. "Forced to weather.com"?  How much force did it take?  LOL! Now if it's an hour and a half old, I'm not sure how you came up with that.  It either gets its reports from Johnson County Airport or KCI.  But you did back up my point.  TWC is not a great place for local, but much better on the national scene.  It doesn't have the capability to really dig in at the local level.
Simplykristi, some of the Storms Stories were good, but they're mostly repeats.  When Weather Changed History could also be good, if it wasn't repeated so often.  I have travelled back and forth to the northeast and Chicago.  If I'm going to travel, I'd rather depend on TWC rather than the locals.  I also have satellite.  However, the folks who say they don't trust the local forecast, will also quote the NWS.  That's where TWC gets it local forecasts.  So either both are correct or both are wrong.
My point was not so much whether TWC was accurate, but a lot of people catch a buzz-phrase about something and run with it, completely oblivious to the facts.  It's like I said about "Fox news -- fair and balanced".  I know so many people who quote that, but write off the Rupert Murdoch video about where he admitted his network tried to "shape the war (yes, his exact words)".  So if people are going to bash TWC, they should not quote NWS at all because they're contradicting themselves.

Matt,  Sometimes TWC reminds me of the old MTV days when they actually showed music videos.  I get most annoyed when TWC is showing a Storm Story Clip while people are getting killed in OK---and particularly annoyed when this season is setting the record for tornadoes and severe weather and I find myself sitting here watching old storm stories....

Ok I watch TWC at times. None of the local stations show weather reports in places I want to see it. I keep tabs on several places and most local stations do not recognize there is anything west of Denver. Yes it is broad based and they add those stories to draw in viewers that want more than just a weather update every few minutes. However, they show pictures of the storms aftermath ona larger level than local stations have time to do.
It is a business, after all, and they have to widen their appeal to gain viewers. No one expects their forecasts for your local area to be explicit and for severe weather it is common sense to go local.

I still likeTWC for live hurricane and giga-sized nor'easter blizzards, but now they have plenty of competition. Hard to say who's winning... but between cable news channels (which are really coming to the table with live weather stories the last few years), the internet, live streaming, etc. it wouldn't surprise me if TWC viewership numbers are way down from the past.
