Extremely high bases showers

Good morning bloggers,

We have a fairly significant cap (warm air aloft) that has taken over today. Amazingly there are scattered showers with bases of 15,000 to 20,000 feet.  It is like we have, what I sometimes call, "cirro cumulonimbus" clouds with showers coming out of them, and since we have such high dewpoints this is allowing a few drops to reach the ground.  This will also lead to some pretty good wind developing this morning with the evaporative cooling of the falling rain causing some weak microbursts.

This cap should limit any chance of thunderstorms until later tonight with a weak front stalling near us.  I will go into the details of the next few days later this morning.

Have a great day!

Gary

Good morning Gary---We received 1.3 inches of rain yesterday in Berryton--some limbs down but no hail----with this stormy pattern now set in with all these crazy warm fronts and weak cool fronts---(Can you believe it was 108 in Liberal yesterday?)---where are we in relation to the LRC?   After this mess is done will those slightly below normal temps begin to show up?  I can't remember this humid of a start to the meteorological summer since about 1993----if it is this humid now what will late July and August bring?  Keep up your good work---Michael/Berryton/Topeka

---------------

Michael,

The entire jet stream is in retreat and severe weather season, as we have experienced it this year, is about to look more summer like soon.  Very soon.  But, we have one more week to deal with the serious tornado threats, and today there is one to our east.

The LRC continues, and is also weakening.  The Great Lakes trough is due back in about a week.  If the flow is strong enough, this could give us some MCS activity from the north as summer approaches, but I am not sure yet on these developments in the longer range.

You had some nice rain.  Many parts of Kansas City had less than 1/4 inch.

Weather Team,

I am supposed to travel to Omaha, Nebraska this Friday through Monday. Do you think I will be ok? I do not like to travel in bad weather and wonder what Friday and Monday will be like since those are my travel days.
Thanks
Leah

------------

Leah,

Right now it appears the thunderstorm threat shifts to our east on Friday and it is dry this weekend.

Had quite a sound and light show for a very brief period here at 291 & 150 in Lee's Summit about 2AM. Only amounted to .35" of rainfall. Had an additional .2" from the showers yesterday AM.

Ok, when the tornado threat is here, I am going to stay at my parents house.  My question is are the storms tonight having that threat or is it just the storms on Thursday night?

-----------------

There will be a slight threat of severe weather tonight, but the biggest threat is way off to the east.

I don't think we need to worry much about Thursday. Thursday the storms are going to be all west and north of a Topeka to St. Joseph line. Friday may be different - but there's things I'm seeing about Friday's setup that give me doubts.

---------------

Thursday's potential seems to be way out west, and our threat again seems low.  It may be all east of us on Friday.  And, this may be our last really good chance of tornadic thunderstorms this season, which is fine with me.  The jet stream is retreating, right when it should.

I think on Saturday we are all going to look back and say this week was way overhyped :-S (or at least for Kansas City)

-------------

We already had softball sized hail in the local area yesterday, just west of KC.  But, your point is, once again, our local viewing area is just getting surrounded by the worst.  Today it is to the north and east.  Thursday it is to the north and west. So, it is happening, but not right here, once again, this is fine with me.

well.. rainfall total is...  .05 inches for 65th & State Ave.

Nice lightning show, and loved hearing that thunder.  Now let the big storms either ride ahead of us or behind us.. doesn't really matter as long as they don't get me lol

I love going to nbcauctionnews.com to read this blog. But has the station's certificate expired? I keep getting errors when I get to the main page. I have to quickly click the blog link before the errors appear just to be able to read what all has been written. This is happening on multiple computers. Is anyone else having issues?

-------------

I am having the same issue on my computer.  The problem is being addressed.

Weatherfreak,
I have had occasional issues but its not everytime.
So Gary, are you saying that the threat for tornados for us has gone down?  I am just trying to stay ahead cuz I would have to plan to stay at my parents house since I have no basement.  Thanks for all you do.  I bet you are tired today.  I stayed  up just to see your weather forcast cuz you all are the best!!!  I can't wait to go home and take a nap..lol.

I don't want the damaging hail or tornadoes, also don't much like 70 or 80 mile and hour winds.  What we will need in this county is more rain, I can see us getting very dry here going into summer.  Somehow since mid May all the beneficial rains have avoided my area just south of St. Joseph.  I was really hoping the weather pattern would lead to more widespread rains and not the localized flooding in areas around us.

Or maybe this is just a localized dry area?

Gary, your summer forecast called for below average temperatures and above average rainfall.  However, it appears to be more above normal temps and lower rainfall.  Are you expecting any cooler temps and more rain in the next couple of weeks?  I am a firm believer in the LRC, I just don't want it to end yet!

I have noticed something strange today and wondered if it had anything to do with the uniqueness of last nights showers.

Everything that was rained on looks especially dirty today -- Cars, house, tables outside.  I wondered if because the rain fell from higher than normal if it also accumulated more dust and debris from the atmosphere on its way down?
