Electircal storm as midnight approaches

Wow bloggers,

It has been a rather exciting day.  Thunderstorms are now moving into southern half of the Kansas City metro area, and increasing across Johnson county, crossing the state line into Jackson county.  Some areas have already had over 3 inches of rain, while others are waiting for their first drop. There is a weak front just sitting right over Kansas City tonight and will begin lifting northward later tonight.  There is a low level jet enhancing the thunderstorm activity, but heavy rain and frequent lightning are the main threats.

We will keep tracking it for you tonight.  These thunderstorms are now back building and this will create way too much rain in some locations.  They are showing signs of lifting north towards the northern part of the metro area, so your dry night may be about to change.

How much longer are these thunderstorms expected to keep developing!? We have had 1.87" of rain so far here in Lenexa, but it just started raining again.

Also, we got some pictures and video of that rotating storm as it moved over us. I will try to send you the pictures or a link to the video later tonight.

2.8" in SE Lee's Summit around 11 pm, but then the rain cranked up again - a LOT - and it's been pouring ever since.  So much rain, thunder and lightening.  Gary, you were definitely spot on with your prediction that flooding would be the problem tonight, not tornadoes.  Was happy to hear that after getting in the house earlier this evening after witnessing that wall cloud in LS dance a bit to the music of the tornado sirens! Wow - the thunder is crazy right now.

Today was a wild day that I missed out on. I left for Six Flags Saint Louis today at 4am and just got back. We were on a bus and I could see the light show to our west. As we were driving through Bourbon County I noticed through the light show how low the cloud bases were and we were getting some VERY strong winds hitting us. After we got back to P-town I got into the car and turn on the radio to discover we were driving through a tornado warning for about 2 counties. YIKES!!!!! Oh well we made it home safe. My cell phone was programmed for Linn Co only....looked like the storms went all around us here at home. We have a lot of wind but that is it. Take care all and be safe.

chieffan, no stupid questions here.  Tornado warnings do not require a watch to be issued in advance.  Tornadoes happen many times in a severe T-storm watch, i.e. Liberty May 2, 2008.  I have also seen tornado warnings when no watch was issued.  It is far from a perfect science, and sometimes that pop-up storm has just the right conditions to become supercellular in the snap of a finger.  It can happen almost that quickly.  The SPC does a great job of nailing it down, so it doesn't happen often.  But it can happen.

Quite the light show from up here near KCI.  We have had literally drops of rain all day.  I don't even think it qualifies as a trace.  It is a spectacular sight to see all the lightning and sadly, that fire in KCK is visible from here.  Amazing.

Hey Gary, this one is for you.. My 18 year old daughter (who is in the I know everything and you know nothing stage) has informed us that a funnel cloud is not a rotating mass that is still in the clouds, i.e. a tornado that has not hit the ground yet. We asked her if that was not a funnel cloud, what is? We thought it was like magma, it is magma inside the earth, but when it comes out of the earth it is lava. So please explain the difference between a funnel cloud and a tornado. By the way everyone, she thinks that I am crazy to listen to all of you. That everyone is way too paranoid and nobody knows what they are talking about. (of course the sun rises and sets on her boyfriends Mom who is a weather spotter)

Ohhh, I am in the middle ground.  I am not sold on that it won't happen.  Just not as widespread as advertised.  I still think THU late night into FRI presents the greatest severe risk as applied to the metro.  We could still be in the unfortunate area.  I need to get mesoscale on that which requires more time...  However, synoptically, this whole week gives legitimate chances.  Until the jet retreats north and flattens out, it could be on at any time...

Indeed, if the cap breaks later this afternoon, it isn't out of the question.  This gets a little hairy because there are so many outflow boundaries associated with the storms that have fired today/tonight.  How they interact with the synoptic scale makes it difficult to predict locally.  Yet at the same time, if it weren't for these outflows, maybe the cap wouldn't break even with a front.  I'm of the persuation if they are both present at the same place at the same time, strong daytime heating there as well, anything is possible, almost a sure bet.  As time marches on, we will know much more.  Dynamics on the grand scale are in place, as they will be and have been all week long.

That said, those same outflow boundaries can kill any vertical development i.e. a "bubble high", so it is a double edged sword.  It will be interesting to see what unfolds each day of this week, for sure!

that stinks, I was hoping to wake up to some rain.  All we got were sprinkles and it's reformed south of here again and falls apart along the river to the west.  Also very heave rain up north.  That's not fair to repeatedly miss rain over and over and over and over.  No matter what weather pattern we are in it seems to be the same result every spring into summer.  Heavy rains all around and dry, dry, dry south of St. Joseph to the Buchanan County line.

It's ridiculous how much we are behind for year to date totals than other areas around us.  I bet we are behind at least 5 inches from others and some locations 10 to 15 inches just in the state of Missouri.
