PDS Tornado Watch

Watch NBC Action News HD at 5, 6, & 10pm as we track severe weather using LIVE:ESP!

A PDS Tornado Watch has been issued for the local area, including Kansas City.  PDS stands for Particularly Dangerous Situation.  Jeremy Nelson will explain on our newscasts at 5 and 6 PM.  I will be on my way in soon!

Thunderstorms are exploding in the Plains right now as a dry line, upper level energy, and daytime heating are helping to set off the strong to severe thunderstorms.  Our thoughts for arrival time in our viewing area still remain the same as previous blogs and from days ago.  We are still looking at the best chance for the metro occurring probably after 10pm.  Best bet is in the 10p-2a window for the viewing area(maybe a little sooner for northeast KS & northwest MO).  Biggest threat from the storms will likely be strong/damaging winds.  Hail and isolated tornadoes can't be ruled out either.

Our lead storm chaser Sean Wilson is currently chasing a super cell thunderstorm north of McPherson.

Gary will add some more thoughts in just a few mintues.  If you live in the metro you can relax early this evening as the storms will not be arriving until late.

From Gary:  Everything is still right on track. This severe weather event is still evolving right before our eyes.  We are anticipatinng a raging line of thunderstorms to continue to shift and change as it intensifies and takes aim on parts of our viewing area.  If a bow echo forms it could be quite strong, but we are still expecting it to make it to the state line between 10 PM and 2 AM.

I have been so busy today so I have had hardly any time to comment. If they do issue a tornado watch, which they will, I wonder if it will be a PDS tornado watch, because we are in a moderate risk, and in a 15% chance of tornadoes, like areas out west in central KS with the same tornado threat. Also, something I have noticed, is that this tornado watch will be issued primarily for the thunderstorms that will fire up ahead of the line of storms that will come in later. Those appear to be by themselves, so I would think that those have just as high of a tornado threat if not higher than the line later tonight. I bet that it will expire after the second line, which appears to be primarily damaging winds, but also some tornadoes.

Only thing I'm concerned about is that with 25-35 MPH surface winds in place and Mean Storm Motion of 50 to 60 MPH... well just do the math - wouldn't be hard to get some pretty good gusts going out of this line - even if it does not hold together, the gust front could pack a punch.

I don't quite understand how they determine a PDS , A tornado watch in and of itself means there could be a dangerous situation, does a PDS just mean the storms are apt to be of a stronger level (F3 or stronger), just confused on what triggers the PDS rating

Perhaps it will be just a straight line wind event, although I fail to see how potential winds of over 90mph are any consolation.  However, when we're in a PDS Tornado Watch it seems ill advised to continue discounting the potential of tornados.  Remember May 1st/2nd when we were just in a "regular" tornado watch?  It was a punishing wind event that spun up an EF2 and EF3 tornado, of which I got to take part.  Anyway, on the afternoon of Friday, May 2nd I was going to post the following on the blog, but never did.  He still resides on my hard drive so now you can all read it and think a bit when you say it's "just going to be a wind event".  To wit:

I freely admit I've always been one to wish for the worst in weather.  Much as Chfs327 posted once, it excites me, and I feel more alive.  I get chills every time the weather radio goes off announcing a tornado watch, and when there's a warning issued for my county, I'm bouncing off the walls with excitement.  Before Thursday night, I was truly unaware of what it's like to be in what I wanted to see so bad, and I also placed explicit trust in the NWS to issue a tornado warning prior to a tornado.  I can't blame the NWS because the fact is the science of tornado prediction isn't exact, events sometimes change quicker than any warning system can be deployed.

I'd been following predictions all day Thursday and watched radar late Thursday night as the squall line formed.  It was the most impressive line I've ever seen as it closed in on the metro.  In the hour leading up to its arrival I sat on the deck watching lightning while listening to Jeremy on the television.  I got just enough rain that I went inside and looked out my south and west facing windows in the back bedroom.  With the lightning I could see what appeared to be a wall of rain and wind getting close.  In hindsight, what I may have been looking at was the Brooke Ridge tornado near the point where it "dissapated", a mere half mile southwest of my house.  I walked back to the deck, which faces north, and a couple minutes later the power flickers and the wall of rain and wind hit.   My three year old house groans a bit and the fiance jumps off the couch, where she had been sleeping waiting for her dorky husband to be, to see the storms arrive.

The wind surged hard, the rain hitting the windows was deafening, then the power throughout the entire subdivision went out.  I have battery back up on my computer and was getting ready to post to the blog from my room that has both south and west facing windows.  As I started to type the computer monitor, windows, and chair I'm sitting in start vibrating.  I leave the room immediately and walk to the living room where my fiance is searching for a flashlight.  It's difficult to visualize with words, but at this point the dark of night actually gets shades darker, looking out the windows displays constant flashes of aquamarine lightning but absolutely nothing else.  I hear what can be best be described as the forceful increase of wind speed against my house.  It was far more like the sound created by sucking air through a straw than a locomotive.  As the house can be felt moving under our feet, there is a very distinct drop in pressure, which my fiance and I both comment on.  That sensation alone is something I will never forget.  As suddently as it came, it fades, and we're left with just rain and more normal severe storm conditions.  I'm speculating the tornado had not yet "dissapated" but was off the ground enough that it caused only minor damage in my neighborhood which lies a mile northwest of Brooke Ridge.

I've learned the following things from this incident.  Looking at houses close to us, we're lucky to be missing only a handful of shingles, and to have other people's insulation stuck to the side of our house.  The NWS isn't infallible and sometimes doesn't issue the correct warning.  My disaster plan should at least include a flashlight close at hand.  LOL.  Be careful for what you wish, you might get it.  When a storm arrives in a fashion more intense than you've ever experienced before, shakes the house, and presents a significant pressure drop, you should be in the basement and not standing in the living room talking with your fiance about how freaking cool it is!   ~ Dave

Braysmama: The threat of tornadoes is 15% within 25 miles of a mpint, which is significant, not low. That risk is high enough to prompt a moderate risk. So there is some need to be cautious, as in just keeping your weather radio on. And Jonathon, those watch probabilities seem really high for tonight! It will be an extremely long night! And, I think everyone should listen to Kristi! Everyone should, epecially keep their weather radio on, or, if they don't have one, by one now! Didn't comment past couple of days since I wanted to think things over after reading the posts concerning the sounding of sirens vs. not.   The Pleasant Hill NWS is our "eyes in the sky" and they issue the watches and warnings for the metro and surrounding area.  Lets say I live in Smithville, and I happen to be in Olathe for an evening out.  Suddenly the tornado sirens go off.  Maybe in Smithville, this means that there is an actual tornado on the ground.  But MAYBE in Olathe, the emergency managers sound the sirens for a thunderstorm warning with the potential for damaging winds.  Should I take cover because I am about to be carried away in a tornado?  (For the sake of debate, I am not around a radio or television!)  Or should I just move away from windows because of the threat of strong winds?  The Pleasant Hill NWS should have FIRM DEFINITIONS of when and why a tornado siren in sounded in their region.  Not leave it up to each city, emergency manager or police chief to decide.  Of course the debate would next be, what is the definition, and what to do about the yahoos who go ahead and ignore the sirens anyway?   Just a tidbit to chew on while we wait for the storms....

This is what gets so frustrating. The weather team says one thing. Then others come and give their opinions to the contrary, then others contrary to those. What is a person to think? Some tell everyone we'll barely get rained on, others that this could be very bad. Others rant about people being worried, otehrs that we are too complacent.

I know enough to stay aware. But how does this look to someone new or who understands less? I have seen things happen suddenly when we have been under a slight risk and everyone figured nothing would happen and then it does. Whenever I have family home alone, with me, or I am at work and my kids are home alone or my dogs are alone, I am going to be every concerned. But again, if I were new to this blog I wouldn't know if this was just overanxious hype or something to worry about. Think how this sounds to others.
Those who said this would be nothing..and now we are under a PDS.

i will say i dont think anyone should take the threats lightly. Be aware of the situation, pay attention to it and since it can come later in the night make sure to have a weather radio on you. Something can happen tonight, i know we think maybe just winds, but those can damage. So just be prepared and we will all get past this.

Jeri,
I never said it would not be bad...  I just never felt that there was a huge risk for tornadoes for the metro KC area.  And I am still not convinced even tho we are under a PDS Tornado Watch.  I would be more convinced if the storms had formed closer to us and the sun was out today.  It's been cloudy today but definitely warm and humid.

I am more convinced of a wind event later.  Straight line winds are no picnic.  I have seen what a microburst (still convinced it was a funnel even seven years later) and straight line winds have done just in my neighborhood alone.

I am sorry if my posts have rubbed you the wrong way this week.

Kristi, not that at all. (I am at work so cannot get on here much). I just recall the lady that wrote to the KC Star that Gary mentioned, saying she heard all was well, went to bed, and got slammed with a tornado. I am afraid new people might see the discussion, not understand, and decide with people saying everything will fall apart before it gets here or that we will not even see rain...that there is no reason to stay aware.

Everyone should stay aware, everyone should understand that whether we get 90mph winds or a F-1 tornado, it is the wind that causes the damage. I do not want anyone to come here and feel that there is no threat and then blame people here for making them feel secure without cause. True, everyone is responsible for their own well-being but how bad would we feel if we were saying there was nothing to worry about and then their house got slammed and injured their family...or worse?

It is very confusing here when we go under a watch, some are too hyper, some too calm and it is hard to tell what to do. And I don't feel we should second guess the weatheer team, since they are the ones who are trained and have been doing this for a long time.

No offense meant , Kristi.

chfs327: I'm thinking a serial based on this I found on Wikipedia, because of size and the deep low:

Serial derecho - Multiple bow echoes embedded in a massive squall line typically around 250 miles (400 km) long. This type of derecho is usually associated with a very deep low. Also because of embedded supercells, tornadoes can easily spin out of these types of derechos.
Progressive derecho - A small line of thunderstorms take the bow-shape and can travel for hundreds of miles.
Hybrid derecho - Has characteristics of a serial and progressive derecho. These types of derechos are associated with a deep low like serial derechos, but are relatively small in size like progressive derechos.
According to the National Weather Service criterion, a derecho is classified as a band of storms that have winds of at least 50 knots (58 mph or 93 km/h) along the entire span of the derecho.

Am I off on that?

But you are on a computer, obviously have access to the internet, why wouldn't you google "mesoscale discussion national weather service 2008" instead of wasting time trying to get the answer here?

Use google as your friend, second link on that google search and you are there.

Also, if I have a question on this fantastic blog about something someone posted that I don't know of I google it.  You get an answer in literally less than a minute vs. waiting around for someone to respond to you or wasting time typing a post about being "invisible".

Again I hope to not come across as an you-know-what but it frustrates me when people waste their time and a post that all of us have to waste time reading, when the aformentioned poster could easily find the answer in less than a minute.

Good luck with Google.  Google is YOUR FRIEND!!!!  ;>)

Does anyone know what kind of rainfall amounts these storms could have?  The weatherbug thing is saying 2 to possibly 4 inches an hour!

Our town has the Marais de Cygnes river on one side & the Pottawatomie Creek on the other.  The creek is what got us last year & the river is already at flood stage.

Just wondering if we might be looking at more flooding from this to the point that we should head out soon instead of chance not being able to get out due to the rising water in town.

Would love to have some thoughts on this.

Everyone.

Derechos can be more destructive as single F-4 or F-5 tornadoes.

Remember that derecho that swept S-SW from C. Illinois into the St. Louis metro area two years ago?

It killed 10 people and left thousands without power for weeks.

More people died in that high wind derecho event in Metro St. Louis than died in the F-5 in Iowa two weeks ago.

Just a reminder of how destructive these lines of storms can be.  This one is going to very similiar to the one earlier in the Spring that popped that isolated tornado in the Northland in the early morning hours.

I was six years old during the June '82 derecho.  We lived on 76th St between Parallel and Leavenworth Rd.  I remember literally being yanked out of bed by the back of my pajamas and hauled backwards through the house to the basement door.  If my parents had been about five seconds slower, we would've ended up under the oak tree from our front yard after it crashed through the roof into our living room.  Bottom line, they can cause much more widespread damage and be just as deadly as tornadoes.

HIGH RISK appears to be for wind not so much tornadoes.  We must be prepared for the bow echo that is approaching us from the SW.  It is in the Emporia area now.  Be prepared for strong winds.  A tornado could spin up for a very brief time.  Use common sense...  Stay away from windows during the storm.  Have a flashlight ready in case the power goes out.

Are we still thinking the storms are going to arrive in the Liberty area at about 9:00 or 9:30?

I'm just trying to figure out when I have to leave to go to shelter.

Thanks

I don't understand how it would be in Kansas City in 30 minute if it's at Emporia now. Is it really moving that fast or will we feel the winds before the actual storm arrives?

I am one who panics at this stuff. I love it, but it scares me. I have a toddler upstairs asleep in her crib and never know when to wake her up and bring to the basement. Then I don't know where in the basement to go. It is finished with no heavy furniture, but 3 rooms that are inclosed. I am in Stilwell, southern JOCO. Do I need to be worried? I have been following you guys all day and seriously how do you know this stuff? My head has been spinning! :) I love this blog and all the great info we get from it. Skys look scary out by me right now.
