NBC Action Weather Blog

8 PM update

Stay tuned to NBC as we will keep you updated all evening and night on the severe weather moving thru the area!

Good late evening bloggers,

We just got word that they are closing Wakarusa and asking all festival goers to leave the park!  If you have family or friends there please keep them updated with our coverage!

There have been reports of brief tornado touchdowns across extreme northwest Missouri near the Missouri River (Watson, Rock Port area) right before 8 PM.  A bow echo has developed.  We are doing updates during national breaks tonight, so our next one is on at 8:12 PM.  We will  keep you updated as this line approaches the local area.

Remember, a tornado watch is in effect until midnight, and it will likely be extended east and later into the night.  The main threat will be damaging winds, but tornadoes are also possible.

Please help us out with your reports as this line moves through.

Gary

If you live in Nodaway County MO, you need to take shelter now.  A squall line containing extremely damaging winds and tornadoes is moving thru.  Tractor trailers were blown over on I-29 a little while ago, according to NWS.  Take cover!

Hello all!

Just joining tonight and boy does it look dangerous.  It's been a few years since we have been in a PDS tornado watch and also a HIGH RISK of severe weather.  It's going to be a long night.

Also, welcome back Gary!  Glad you are back to help track the storms.

Once the line moves thru, the threat for severe weather for metro KC should be over.  Then we turn to our friends and neighbors to the east.

Someone asked me on the previous blog about the the threat for their area...  I believe it was worrywrt....  The risk will be less for your area down there in Knob Noster.

It Keeps my kids calm and they can have fun while I monitor the weather on a little 5 inch screen that will be obsolete after 2009.

I really hate that because the earlier storm this week caused us to lose cable. Kids were okay because they could watch movies.  Once the changes come in 09, there will be millions around the country at risk during storms. Not to mention that I don't think HD tv is available on little 5" battery powered screens for when the power goes out!

ok, I'm not trying to start anything, but I've observed some folks behavior on this board and it really gets annoying when we have severe weather present. I'm not saying kristi is a bad person, but she's borderline over-hyper during times like this, and unless I'm very mistaken, she does not hold any position of authority backed by any formal degree. During these times, people need professional information from trained people, not opinions from folks who just enjoy hearing thunder.

I'll be honest, this makes it hard to weed through this thread looking for vital information and quite possibly at time she or others could say information that is incorrect and dangerous to the public.

I'm sorry to be a jerk about it but I really do think some need to tone it down on this blog. I'm not a nooby here that has just started reading, I do more lurking here than posting, but I've seen this over and over again for the better part of a year.

One thing to remember about the folks on line here is, regardless of their knowledge, it is JUST A HOBBY to them.  While they may be able to look at a lot of different sites, they don't have the years of experience that the weather team has, nor do they have the training.  I would trust the pros over the hobbyists any time, regardless of how good they are at their hobby.  It's not a knock on many of the folks here, but the fact that they don't have the true training and experience that others do.
If you are on the second floor of an apartment with no basement and have a place to go, I wouldn't feel ashamed about doing it.  You're looking out for your little one.

I don't want the .01% to ruin it for everyone.

Since the Gladstone tornados did not have sirens and everyone keeps talking that severe thunderstorms can produce tornados when do I make the decision to get my little one out of bed? I am sure that nothing will happen where I am at, but if my roof got blown off and her with it, I would just die. I am in far Southern JOCO just east of 69 Highway. Storms fired too early across western Kansas near Dodge City. The timing screwed the whole thing up. We have like a total of 32 tornado reports from something that had the atmospheric conditions if it would have timed out right to produce one hellacious storm system.

Even though I think we got off pretty easy this go around...let's keep in mind the people in northwest MO and northeast KS that may have had tornadoes affect their lives tonight.

just a good ol fashioned Tstorm at 291 and Stark.  Not much wind.  Lots of rain which is good.  People still trying to repair homes from the May bow echo.
