Storm Recap...Heavy Rain Ahead?

Watch NBC Action News HD this weekend from 7-8 a.m. and at 5 & 10 p.m. for Kansas City's most accurate forecast!

I want to start off by thanking everyone who participated in the blog on Thursday as severe weather moved into the region.  We had 10s of thousands of hits on the blog!  Also a big thank you to everyone who sent in storm reports, rain totals, and pictures!  Here is a list of some of the rain totals that we received.  The bigger number next to some of the totals represents rainfall amounts so far in June.  Some of the totals just six days into June are amazing!

  • Garnett, KS  2.25"
  • Hillsdale Lake  1.95"
  • Pleasanton, KS  1.90"
  • La Cygne, KS  1.70"

  • Kingsville, MO  1.00"
  • Lee's Summit, MO  0.89"  June: 3.74"
  • Greenwood, MO  0.80"  June: 6.00"
  • SW Grain Valley, MO  0.79"  June: 3.47"
  • NW Lawrence, KS  0.77"  June: 2.03"
  • 151st & Mur-len   June: 4.84"

There were also 5 reports of tornadoes in the viewing area Thursday evening.  All of those reports were in far northwest Missouri.  We were the first to break into programming right after the 6pm news ended to keep our viewers to the north updated during the warnings.  Overall with the setup for Thursday, I think we got off pretty easy with the small number of tornadoes reporter and isolated strong wind reports.  Here is a picture of the damage in Holt County from a possible tornado.  This looks like possibly a trailor?

I'll post the NWS storm surveys when they are completed.  I'd guess that 2-4 tornadoes occurred over northwest Missouri last evening.

Now the focus shifts to the weekend and our next good chance of thunderstorms.  For tonight there is a chance of a few thunderstorms developing as warmer and more moist air begins to flow back into the region.  As I write there are a few showers in Henry county and they have been drifting slowly north/northeast.  The showers and thunderstorms shouldn't be too widespread tonight, but just be aware there could be more rumbles tonight.  Not expecting severe weather for our immediate area though.  If any of these are lingering around early tomorrow we will track them on an early edition of NBC Action News Today from 7-8am.  We are on early due to the French Open on NBC.

On Saturday winds will be gusty out of the south-southwest and will likely top 35 mph at times.  Saturday looks warm and humid, with dew points pushing back to around or just above 70.  So the A/C will likely get a workout again very soon...if you turned it off today.

Sunday will see a cold front sag into the region...especially the later we get into the day.  This will trigger showers and thunderstorms along the front as it hits our very warm and moist air.  With the slow movement of the front and several disturbances riding along the boundary heavy rain will be a concern Sunday into Monday.  As of right now I feel pretty confident thinking that some parts of the viewing area could see 1-3" of rain...maybe more.  I'd like to see how this trends over the next 12-24 hours before we try to get more specific on what areas will see the heaviest of the rain and how much.  But just be aware if you have a wet basement or live near a rising river/stream...that the worst may still be ahead.  Severe weather-wise there is a slight risk Sunday/Monday...with the main threat looking like hail/strong winds.

Below is the rainfall forecast from the 18Z GFS thru Monday.

These are the weekend weather highlights and details that we will focus on during our weathercasts this weekend.  Enjoy your Saturday and I'll keep you updated all weekend long!

Jeremy,

I have to applaud you all. (I know everyone has been) I have a 7 year old autistic son who gets extremely agitated during the severe weather. A few years ago we only watched another meteorologist who just seemed to make his fears worse.  It was very reassuring to have Gary and the rest of you on last night to ease his fears. You did not make the situation more dramtic then it really was.  In the event of bad weather I think it is more important to tell us the viewers the facts and what we need to know rather then making it a contest to see who can stay on the longest just for ratings. Thank you.  My sons were calmed and able to finally go to sleep.

As far as this blog goes, you are the only station to offer this and so far this spring we had been able to plan days ahead in the event of severe weather. Kudos to you all. When you have said we will have rain you were right. We knew a week in advance that yesterday had the possibility of being severe and we were able to plan accordingly.  I applaud you all. I thank you all. Due to your commitment to the people of this metro area and their safety, you are the only station for news and weather this family will ever turn to.---Amanda

Amanda,

Thank you for making us a part of your family's home!  We always strive to provide the quickest and best information to keep the viewers in our area safe and relaxed when severe weather is in the viewing area.  Thank you again for watching and being a part of our blog community!

jeremy, I was just wondering how come you and gary barely covered the tornado warning last night. I flipped to you guys hoping for coverage, but couldnt get you. so I had to watch the other stations.

*******************

If you are referring to the Johnson/Lafayette warning around midnight Gary did cut-ins about every 10 minutes to keep everyone updated.  If we felt the threat was greater we would have been on non-stop.  We have a direct link with the NWS so we get spotter info about right when they do.  The reports coming in were mainly radar indicated rotation and that was hit miss on the radar.  I think we covered the threat and kept people informed.

Jeremy - each day your blogs get better and better.  Great job!  You have come ALONG way since joining the team.  Very polished.

That said, in looking up at the totals...I see KMCI is not listed...LOL.  Maybe because the "official" reading for this month is....drumroll please....

.74 inches.

The user totals are great...but from an official standpoint since KMCI is most widely used...perhaps it will just another point to spark debate down the road.

It wouldn't be so odd to see the total that low as it seems that most of the rainfall has been south of the airport, but above..even areas nearby and northward show more rain.

Makes me wonder about accuracy...either from the totals above or KMCI.  I know you won't touch this thought with a ten foot pole, but interesting all the same.

;-)

********************

I just used blogger totals.  And with all that we received I think I probably missed a few.  I tried to put some on the blog and mix others in for the 5 & 6pm shows.  I'm going to show a cool timelapse of the thunderstorms to our south today at 10pm tonight.

The rain seems to miss KCI over the past several events.  If you look at MKC they have had 2.16" so far in June.  Not too far from KCI.

Sunday/Monday could even things out a bit.

So the clouds, the BIG clouds, that I saw out to the south were from the storms all the way down in springfield?  That is far.  How can we see them all the way up here?

The storms were just north of I-44...so north of Springfield.  The clouds were probably about 6 miles or more above the ground.  I'll show a good timelapse tonight at 10pm!

So Jeremy, I realize you were not in this area in 1993, but have you guys talked much behind the scenes that we could see some more wide spread flooding through the missouri river areas and mississippi? I'm not sure how rain totals around the region compare to those in 93, but I know I've seen a few references being made.

**********************

We certainly have had some heavy rain this Spring...but overall some areas are very close to average.  It wasn't until this past week that some areas have jumped way above average.  It would take a lot of rain to get a serious 1993 conversation going.  I lived in Minnesota along the Des Moines river in 1993.  Our home didn't flood but the park and some homes built a little too close to the river did.

Mosquitos, biting flies and ticks are very bad this year. Now it looks like another deludge of rain is coming. I really do wish we could go into at least a 7-10 dry spell.

Been watching big thuderheads forming to the south of me all evening. Some formations are quite impressive.

Scott, your comment about Jeremy kind of backs up what I said the other day when I wrote in here that if you're going to decide on whether to leave, always trust the pros.  Jeremy has definitely stepped right in and been a key part of the team since his arrival.  That being said, working around the team day after day and you'll learn a lot.  This is the type of experience that hobbyists won't pick up and is one of the reasons that when making a decision, we should always rely on the pros, not the hobbyists.

I can vouch for the rain total at KMCI, I was there both days.  I was serious Tuesday when I said we had 8 drops of rain that day.  We watched with great amazement from the field as storm after storm trained not 15 miles south of us...

Yesterday's weak bow moved through and put down heavy rain for about 15 minutes, no hail.  Then it was drizzle at best for the next two hours or so.  I'd go so far as to speculate that .25 inch was the most we received, but I did not have a rain guage.

I have taken measures to fix this problem, independent of anything the weather team will forecast over the next couple of days.  I could ALMOST guarantee good rain at KCI...  I just finished washing AND waxing my car, and I live near KCI, so rain is sure to come.  I could even get specific on times, my car is generally out of the garage between noon and midnight, so I'd look for a good deluge during that time span. LOL!

MattP, I agree, Jeremy is as good as they get.  He comes from a distinguished educational institution (read his bio) and is a great addition to our Kansas City family.  I hope he sticks around for years to come!  Having Gary, Brett and Jeff to comprise the best wx team in KC doesn't hurt either!  Keep up the great work!

I would give 4 of those drops from Tuesday to Southern Buchanan County.  Thursday nights storm was the first 1 inch of rain we had in any storm since Mid April.  The measley total for June stands at 1.07 inches.

How come the heaviest contines to come across northern Kansas into extreme NW Missouri and then south of the airport?  There seems to be a little strip here where it either falls apart as it moves in or reforms off to the east.

I am hoping for some more rains over the next 10 days, will help the garden through the summer heat and help finishing off the pasture so it can be cut for hay later this month. ************** Kurt, The rain chance looks pretty good Sunday into Monday. Hopefully you will see at least another half inch. Jeremy

The government probably has a secret machine that zaps the the air over the KCI area with electromagnetic waves that split the storms.. resulting in the storms splitting with going north and part going south.. in order to keep the field clear for commercial aircraft operations.   Then the split continues downstream across northwest Missouri sometimes.

Just a theory.

Man, it is humid outside today!  When I walked outside at 9:30 for the first time, I was like this is ugly. LOL  Looks like today is a great day to stay inside.

We've had a little over 3.50 inches of rain since Tuesday night.  We got a little over an inch from the storms the other night.  (Forgot to empty the gauge after Tues. night.)

Jeremy,
I have heard people say that this year is similar to 1993.  It's not.  We had a much wetter winter and spring in 1992 - 1993 than 2007 - 2008.  The snowpack in the northern states was higher.  I realize that Madison WI got over 100 inches of snow this past season.  I also realize that we have flooding along the Missouri River now due to heavy rains up north.  There was flooding along the Mississippi River earlier in the spring but not right now.  I honestly don't know what the levels on the Mississippi are running right now.  The floods in 1993, I believe, were 500 year floods.

One more thing...  Jeremy, I want to echo what many others have said...  Nice work :)

TF,
I read the forecast discussion.  Far NW MO could possibly be spared from heavy rain.  That would be tge area just N and W of St. Joe, I assume.  Not all areas will get 3 to 5 inches.  Many areas could get an inch tho.  I would not be surprised of NWS posted a Flash Flood Watch.

IT looks like their may be some big storms tomorrow, but since it is in june, I would think the tornado threat would be very low. It's looking like a more linear event with large hail and damaging winds. It's kind of like  will nature leave us alone? Especially with the flodding concerns, I hope everyone monitors river levels and flood stages.

Very likely someone in the viewing area see's a rain total around 3" or maybe more.  But some of the trends are pushing the heaviest rain band just south of KC.  Not the greatest news since some areas down there have really seen a lot of rain this month.

Flooding kills many people...  It is threat just like tornadoes, damaging winds, and hail.  I know that we've had a lot of rain around the KC area, particularly in the south metro and points south.  I am very concerned about the flooding, especially flash flooding, potential.

It is late spring and I don't think that Mother Nature is quite done with us. :(  Hopefully, we will have a quieter weather as we get into July.

Some of the recent trends are trying to put the heaviest rain just south of KC.  The 18Z NAM is one of the models doing this.  Powercast still has heavy rain from around St. Joe south on Sunday into Monday.  I'm thinking the heaviest may occur from Kansas City and areas south.  We'll have to see where the trend heads this evening.  If the front is faster, then that would likely put the greatest rain totals near or just south of KC.

* HEAVY RAINFALL IS LIKELY FROM THUNDERSTORMS THAT WILL PLAGUE THE
REGION SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY AFTERNOON...DEVELOPING ALONG A
FRONTAL BOUNDARY THAT WILL BE MOVING SOUTH. GIVEN THE HEAVY RAINS
WE HAVE HAD IN RECENT WEEKS...OUR FLOOD AND FLASH FLOOD GUIDANCE
VALUES ARE RUNNING A BIT LOW ACROSS THE REGION. A QUICK INCH OF
RAIN FROM ANY STRONG STORM...OR A MORE PROLONGED ACCUMULATION OF
ONE TO TWO INCHES...COULD CAUSE FLOODING ISSUES.

Jeremy,
Thanks for the info on the rain tomorrow.  Guess I'd better get back outside, ugh!

I did just find a cool link (don't know how new it is, but I don't remember seeing it the past couple of nights either) - weatherunderground now has in interactive tornado google map!

It lists the tornado warnings and older reports, and shows a loop of the radar.  Way cool.  If you zoom in on KC you can see the report locations from the other night.  Click an icon and you'll get the info, or can see the radar loops.

Ok, back outside to the sauna, yuck.

For those of you who might be relatively new here, I blogged here in early March that we were in the most similar trend to 93.
In 93, we went through the same thing where we thought each crest was the last one, only to lead up to a final crest in late July.
It's not what happens here, but north and the upper basin is in for more significant ran.
Yes, it will flood.  It won't be on the scale of 93.  The 93 flood was mainly man made due to the Army Corps of Engineers waiting too long to dump the three dams up river.  Having said that, they've been dumping as much as they can this year.  You'll see Iowa having flooding problems and then us in about 2 weeks.

Dea,
I have been fascinated with the weather for many, many years.  I enjoy tracking winter storms and severe thunderstorms.

I got my first weather radio when I was 11.  It was just a handheld transistor type radio.  I used to hate thunderstorms when I was a kid.  It was nothing for me to hop into my parents' bed during a nighttime storm. :)  If it is at night and the thunder is loud, I might turn on a light...  The thunder has always bothered my ears.  I have always been sensitive to loud noises.  It's due to a hearing loss.

I took a meteorology class when I went to KU a long time ago.  I am not a calculus and physics kind of gal tho.  :)  I have learned a lot more about the weather since then.  There are some people in my family who think that I should have been a meteorologist since I love weather so much. :)  I am always outside before a storm moves in taking pics of the storm as it moves in.  I am always careful. :)  I haven't had any spotter training.. just learned a lot by watching weathercasts and on the internet.

I have seen some serious weather move thru my neighborhood in the past seven years.  In 2001, we had a microburst cut a swath just to our west.  I stood at the wind and watched..  Not a smart move but I made my nieces stay in the basement while I watched.  I am still not convinced that was a microburst seven years later...  For one thing, it never came down all the way to the ground.  It was treetop level and took some shingles off of houses.  I also saw lawn furniture swirling in the street.  I think that it was funnel.  In 2005, we had straightline winds come thru.  They took out a huge walnut tree in one of the neighbor's yards.  I have pictures of the damage from that storm.

I am bummed as a lot of bloggers here about Sean Wilson not offering his storm chasing tours.  I wanted to go sooo bad this year but due to my parents' cancer diagnoses I couldn't.  Heck I can't even get down to the lake.  My friends are wanting me to go later this month.  I think that I will as long as it is not chemo week for either one of them.

I am all for giving people a heads up about approaching storms.  I think that being prepared is very important because you don't know what can happen.  It's all about keeping people safe but calm.

Gary B..

Was checking out your web site.. Where are your KC records for.. your personal weather station?  If so, what is the approximate specific location, if I may ask.

Will be interesting to have a look at the river crest tomorrow.. especially with all the rain and new debris likely to spill in to our north tonight..

********************

Areas to the north will likely have some rain tonight and Sunday.  Looks like a wet go of it thru early Monday.
