Watch NBC Action News HD at 10pm as we track thunderstorms on LIVE:ESP!
Strong to severe thunderstorms are pushing thru the metro area as I write. Our skycam that shows downtown looks like it is completely dark outside even though the sun doesn't set for another hour! I will show a timelapse of the storms moving in tonight at 10pm. Don't forget we do expanded news on Sunday Nights so you will get all kinds of weather! Please continue to send in storm reports, rain totals, and pictures and I will try to use some on the air tonight! You can send storm pictures to jnelson@nbcactionnews.com
Here is LIVE:ESP shortly before 8 p.m. as the strong storms were over Downtown KC, Raytown, Independence, and Overland Park. Strong straight line winds are the greatest severe threat outside of flash flooding with these storms. Some reports of quarter size hail has also been recorded.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch is being cleared as this line slowly moves thru the region. Areas east and southeast of Kansas City remain in a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until midnight. The line of storms has produced 0.50"-2.00" rain totals across the region. A quick look at radar estimates shows areas north of St. Joseph have seen very little rain today...probably a half inch or less. The big question mark is now once this line pass will another wave lift north far enough tonight to push more rain into the metro? I think the heavy rain totals including what has fallen will occur from about Lawrence to Leavenworth and points south and southeast. Totals in Lawrence so far have been around or over 1.50".
Thank you again to everyone who has blogged tonight!
