Storms Blowing By...More Heavy Rain?

Watch NBC Action News HD at 10pm as we track thunderstorms on LIVE:ESP!

Strong to severe thunderstorms are pushing thru the metro area as I write.  Our skycam that shows downtown looks like it is completely dark outside even though the sun doesn't set for another hour!  I will show a timelapse of the storms moving in tonight at 10pm.  Don't forget we do expanded news on Sunday Nights so you will get all kinds of weather!  Please continue to send in storm reports, rain totals, and pictures and I will try to use some on the air tonight!  You can send storm pictures to jnelson@nbcactionnews.com

Here is LIVE:ESP shortly before 8 p.m. as the strong storms were over Downtown KC, Raytown, Independence, and Overland Park.  Strong straight line winds are the greatest severe threat outside of flash flooding with these storms.  Some reports of quarter size hail has also been recorded.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch is being cleared as this line slowly moves thru the region.  Areas east and southeast of Kansas City remain in a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until midnight.  The line of storms has produced 0.50"-2.00" rain totals across the region.  A quick look at radar estimates shows areas north of St. Joseph have seen very little rain today...probably a half inch or less.  The big question mark is now once this line pass will another wave lift north far enough tonight to push more rain into the metro?  I think the heavy rain totals including what has fallen will occur from about Lawrence to Leavenworth and points south and southeast.  Totals in Lawrence so far have been around or over 1.50".

Thank you again to everyone who has blogged tonight!

Jeremy

OK, Leawood 132nd Roe, it has just cut loose with torrential rain.  It was weird, amount 15 minutes ago the wind came in and kicked up, sprinkled then real still.  Now in last 5 minutes heavy wind and rain.  Trees are really swaying, thunder and lightning.

I also noticed that it appears that more rain is starting to build back out in Western Kansas

As a side note, Parkersburg and New Hartford Iowa that got hit with the F5 tornado are now battling flooding.  New Hartford has had to evacuate the entire town and part of Parkersburg is flooded as well.  The Beaver River that runs through the two towns isn't suppose to crest until Tuesday, those people have really been hammerred.  My mother had to leave New Hartford and stay with my sister in Cedar Falls.

Anyone notice the backfill in precip E. of Emporia?  Looks like that redevelopment may skirt the S. area of KC Metro for another round after this one passes.

Thought I would see more training and think (correct me if I am wrong) maybe the low developing in W OK/KS is late in the process and may not make the boundary stationary until after it passes east of most of the metro.

Any thoughts on the flooding event and the possible move of boundary east of expected?

I see lots of redevelopment between Salina and Manhantan, appears that it may be moving this way.  I wouldn't mind a nice long rainy night here in the north, we could use a steady rain overnight.  I am keeping my fingers crossed for more rain.

The disturbance is moving into western Kansas so more showers and storms should develop.  A good rain looks to be on the way tonight...concern for flooding, but the hail/wind threat is heading southeast with that line.

do you think we will see 4"+ somewhere in the metro? What areas would be setup for the most rain at this point?

****************

I still think our forecast of 1-3"+ looks good.  If there are 4" totals they would be in isolated areas.  A lot will hinge on how widespread the rain/storms are as the disturbance heads our way overnight.  There's a pretty steady rain over the region right now and those will likely continue on and off tonight.

I thought i would take the focus off of our area for a second.
