More Rain Tonight

A big thank you to everyone who has participated in the blog today!  Now a quick update for overnight.  The disturbance that we have been waiting for to help ignite our overnight rain is now heading out of Colorado and into Kansas.  New showers and thunderstorms are developing around Wichita and moving northeast.  I expect this new area of rain to spread over areas around Kansas City and points south.  An additional 0.50"-2.00" of rain can be expected mainly close to and south of I-70 tonight.  The westward extend of this will probably be around Lawrence or maybe Topeka.

Here is a look at the new development that we are watching for tonight.

Rain should exit Kansas City during the morning on Monday and maybe give way to a little sun by afternoon.  Areas like Pettis and Henry counties will keep the rain and clouds around a little longer.

Please send in your final rain totals on Monday...and if you have a June total please add that in too.  Thanks again for everyone's weather reports in the blog today!  Who's ready for a break from the storms...me!

Hey Jeremy, real bonus to meet Gary today and then talk to you on the phone tonight. this might be the best day of my life! Seriously though I have a question.

The rain we are having right now. it's mostly rain but you see the occasional lightning with rumble of thunder. Is that still considered Cumulonimbus or is that just really tall nimbostratus clouds?

******************

I'd probably say cumulonimbus.

Jonathan/Jeremy,

When I step out side, and the clouds were lit up by lightning, it looks like the rain is actually falling from the anvils of the thunderstorms to our south, so I guess you would call that Cumulonimbus, since its part of that cloud....

Hi Bellgolf
I have a battery backup on my router and cable modem. In the event of a power outage, that gives me an hour or so to continue working from my laptop. I actually reported a power outage that way once.

So does anybody ever pay attention to the arrows on wunderground? Does it mean there's rotation if they're pointing in 3 different directions? Just wondering.

David, I still have your radar up. I love the graphics, colors, and i love how it pops up with a symbol if there's rotation. I really look for those.

HailJonathan said:

lol lorie. no it doesn't mean there is rotation it just means they are tracking indvidual cellets I guess you would call them inside the storm. but as you can see they change direction every frame so they aren't that trustworthy.

David don't worry about it I'm givin you crap lol

HailJonathan said:

well I don't think they're tornadic they're just very very heavy rain producers and large hail producers. They're Right next to that Low pressure so there's lot's of vertical motion right there.

Dwxtracker said:

Okay,
One more thing, lol, there has to be something wtong with that radar in North Texas, there is no way that those storms are that intense. Its like the radar is stuck in clean air mode (sensitive mode) or something like that. There is no way that every little shower show over 75 DBZ, that would be like baseball sized hail in everyone of those storms! If you use other nearby radars, you will see that they are much less severe than they appear, thats not to say they aren't sever though!

Lorie, glad you like it. Ya, those rotation and hail icons are nice. If you see red or yellow circle with blue dots in the middle, that is a indication of hail. A red circle with a big blue dot in it usually indicates 1" or larger hail, just so you know how to use it.

Jonathan, (I will spell it right this time!!!) to use the private messaging, click the Forums link up at the top,  then you will see a list of names, people online, click one of the names and then click send a private message. I'm sure there's an easier way, but I haven't found it yet.

THIS ONE GOT US GOOD.
I was at my Grandmother's most of the day today, and I was of course watching as the line of storms developed and moved towards us.  I noticed a bit of mammatus before the storms moved in and I figured it would be a pretty good storm, the shelf cloud and the slightly bluish green sky behind it in the rain field was just breathtaking.  Well the storm moved in and we had lots of cg lightning, strong winds(50 to 60 where I was at would be my guess), and sheets of wind blown rain. The power did not flicker at all at her house and there was no immediate signs of limbs down, but minutes later as the storm was winding down, local media started getting reports of tree damage in the north end of town, and a report of a gust at the airport in excess of 70 m.p.h.  Well around 7 p.m. we went to our house. driving north we did not notice much, there was a tree split down the middle and some small branches down along the way but when we got to our neighborhood we could see splotches of green down everywhere it seems. across the street there is half a tree that fell over, there is numerous branches from the trees in our yard down, lots of small pieces of an walnut tree scattered in our yard in the front and the back yard.  Ironically one branch fell in an old pile of twigs/sticks/ branches that we still have from the ice storm.  There were city trucks surveying the damage with their lights flashing, and the power was out.  Well the power just came on about 30 minutes ago.  I did take pictures and hopefully I can get them to you guys by sometime tomorrow.  Is this still the best address to send them to: weather@nbcactionnews.com? THANKS!!

I don't think there is a backside to this storm farmgirl.  It just keeps raining and raining and raining here in Paola.  Radar shows no end in sight.  I just came in from walking Windy, my dog.  She doesn't much like the rain or the puddles but she loves her walk and will endure just about anything.  We walk rain or shine, only time we don't go is if there is lightning or really high winds.  I will never understand people who like this dreary, dismal stuff that ruins everything.  Just my opinion, give me sunny days, humidity and heat and I'll not complain.  Jeremy, please make the rain go away..............

.72 for this event, although not much wind, and little rain after the first storms last night, even the redevelopment somehow missed me.  If you look on the radar est. totals I am in the light blue streak right up central Buchanan County to just south of St. Joseph.  How the heck that happens I don't know?

The June total is 1.88 inches.  I am not ready for the storms to end, they have never really begun up here.  I am not sure what the June average rainfall is, but how come this is such a "wet" weather pattern and this one area misses all the heavy rain?

I am glad though that we have had no hail and no strong winds and no close lightning this entire season.  However, our pond is still down about 3 feet and has never recovered form last summers dry weather, which is amazing when you look at areas very close to us.
