A rainy start to the week

Good morning bloggers,

Strong to severe thunderstorms moved across late Sunday afternoon.  Rainfall amounts have varied quite a bit.  But, I have had 1.74" on the south side of Overland Park, which puts my rainfall total for the month up to 6.83".  This rate can't continue all month long, or we would end up with nearly 20 inches of rain in some spots.  There is another chance of thunderstorms showing up for Thursday, with some chance of severe weather.  But, severe weather season may be about to considerably slow down, if not end, very soon.  I will go into more details of the weather pattern, and how summer is showing stronger signs of moving in, later this afternoon.  Severe weather season almost always comes to a close by the middle of June, at least the significant tornado threats, anyway, as there still may be MCS activity into the summer, depending on the weather pattern, so just because our tornado threats may be ending soon, it doesn't mean it will completely dry out.

There is one more very nice area of rain moving across this morning that could add another 1/4 to 1/2" to the rainfall totals.  How much rain have you had in the past 24 hours, and for the month of June so far?  KCI airport, again, had one of the lowest amounts:

Rainfall totals:

  • Overland Park, KS:  1.74" (6.83" in June)
  • Grandview, MO:  1.85" (6.55" in June)
  • Grain Valley, MO:  2.12" (5.59" in June)
  • Olathe, KS 151st & Mur-Len:  1.40" (6.24" in June)
  • Lee's Summit, MO:  1.54" (4.97" in June)
  • Kansas City, KS (N 18 & State):  1.27" (3.47" in June)
  • Lawrence, KS:  1.46" (3.44" in June)
  • KCI:  0.81" (1.55" in June)

Sunday was the 21st annual Dog-n-Jog benefitting the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City.  Stormy and I ran the one mile in 9 minutes.  After June 13th you can go to http://www.thomasphotographic.com/ and purchase your own memories from the Dog-n-Jog.

Have a great day.  We will discuss the overall weather pattern later on today.  Be sure to watch NBC Action News for Kansas City's most accurate forecast.

Gary

.72 for this event, although not much wind, and little rain after the first storms last night, even the redevelopment somehow missed me.  If you look on the radar est. totals I am in the light blue streak right up central Buchanan County to just south of St. Joseph.  How the heck that happens I don't know?

The June total is 1.88 inches.  I am not ready for the storms to end, they have never really begun up here.  I am not sure what the June average rainfall is, but how come this is such a "wet" weather pattern and this one area misses all the heavy rain?

I am glad though that we have had no hail and no strong winds and no close lightning this entire season.  However, our pond is still down about 3 feet and has never recovered form last summers dry weather, which is amazing when you look at areas very close to us.

Oh an by the way, I feel so much better knowing that I am over a 1/3 of an inch above KCI for June.  I hope summer doesn't build in, I don't have an surplus ground moisture here eeks!

I still am baffled how it seems to split around me every time.

--------------

It has been the trend lately to have lesser amounts up north.  There is another good chance of thunderstorms later in the week, so we will test it again.

Actually, a complete miss would have been for us to get no rain at all.  The heavy thunderstorms, once again, ended up south of here, but we all had a nice soaking rain.  The forecast amounts of 3 inches or more certainly seemed likely, and we just barely missed it.

Gary,

I look forward to hearing more about when the real summer weather pattern will appear here. I see our current pattern as a spring type pattern [or a continuation of the winter pattern]. At 141st and Metcalf, we had a nice gust front as the outflow boundary went through last night ahead of the storm line. The temperature dropped quickly. The storm we received was not as strong as I suspected, however. After the gust front, I saw some cloud rotation before the main rain area moved in.

I'd like to place a weather order for end of next week..   Aarom's Family Fun Center in Belton will be hosting a Pro Bowlers Regional tournament.   We would like high's in the low to mid 80's with low humidity.

Thanks Gary and team..

Siraluce,

Radar storm totals are not as accurate as they might picture, the reason for COCORAHS. My rain gauge comes from the COCORAHS weather organization and unless some one went and poured some extra water in it...it is always very accurate. Yes, I admit it is a high total but in checking other COCORAHS members totals around the Grain Valley area, several have reported near or plus 2inches.

----------------

I think I will do a COCORAHS blog later this week to explain what it is and how we can help and be involved.

Gary,

Thanks about doing a blog about COCORAHS as it is always very interesting what a few miles can make in precip totals. However, after I sort of tried to defend my rainfall total, LOL, I will admit...there could be another possible explaination to the high rainfall total, I orginally gave. The more I think about it...I might not have emptied my rain gauge from the last rain I got which was .79. Though I usually do but may have for some reason I had not emptied it this last time. If this is case then my total would be 1.83 which probably makes more sense. Ok..now to wait for Thursday's rain.
