NBC Action Weather Blog

A cool & cloudy Monday afternoon...update

Good evening bloggers,

*****T-Storms are holding together, just north of Kansas City, at 10 PM*****  These may make it to the north side of the city, as they are associated with a disturbance aloft.

The weather is calming down a bit, but even though severe weather season is about to fade away and shift north, this does not mean it will dry out.  We are execting the above average rainfall to continue through the month, and we have to pay very close attention to the rain patterns.  Iowa, Nebrask, and Wisconsin have been getting a lot of rain as well, so the rivers are high.  Tonight on NBC Action News we will be showing some of the flooding to our north and even some dramatic footage of an entire house being destroyed by a river.  I will be showing this at 6 and 10 PM tonight, as well as looking ahead to Thursdays cold front.

In the blog on Tuesday we will talk about the weather pattern, as we are analyzing it this afternoon.  Have a great evening.

Gary

Hi Gary, glad your back.  I blogged here back in March that I felt we were in a similar pattern as 93'.
Expect a final crest of the MO River not until July 7th at 35' in Kansas City.
As you just pointed out, storms will continue to pound the upper MO River basin.  It takes 48 hours for a Rulo, NE crest to get here and 24 hours from St. Joe.

-------------------

In 1993, the rain picked up in June and then really was crazy into the first half of July.  So, let's see what happens with this pattern.

I also wanted to point out that even if we look to go into a drier trend, that has no impact on the river.  I know the LRC pattern is probably fading, but is still in the ball park.....

--------------

The weather pattern is continuing to weaken, but the LRC continues.  So, I am expecting this wetter weather to continue for a while.  After summer settles in, then I will look and see how the LRC will influence it. At this point there are still questions on the summer pattern.

Joplin rain totals: 2.0" for this storm that started about 11:30 pm last night. Finally stopped raining around 3 pm. :-D  That gives us around 3.5" for month. Last month was around 13"  :-P  So I'd say our drought is a thing of the past. We haven't had to water this year and my rose bushes are gorgeous.

1.28" for the last 24 hours and 5.35" for June here in Western Shawnee.  Ready to dry out a bit but not for too long!  Haven't had to turn on my sprinklers yet, which is great.  Would like to see if I can make it until "real" summer starts on June 20/21/22, whenever the date is.

Thanks,
Tim

Gary I just saw you on tv! Wow that's incredible footage of that house getting dragged in by the river!. Are we expecting the severe weather threat to be lower than last night(you may not know yet as you say it's still several days out). but the spc says the severe weather threat will be north of KC. Are you thinking the same thing?

26 July was the 32.07 ft crest in 1993. . . keep in mind it was a 500 year event it does not mean it will not happen in 2008 . . . but for something like that to occur again many things need to fall in place over the entire river basin which is huge.

The chances exist but are not great the next highest crest is 5 feet lower, 27.20 feet so much pain loss of income for farmers . . . . that many people went through is not good . . . I talk about the remote possibility and hope that THE 24.52 ft a TOP 8 CREST yesterday is as good or bad as it gets. . . .

That rains come as needed for the corn and beans with ample sunshine as well.   See the top ten crest below for the MIGHTY MO IN ST JOE do not forget Atchison at 28.87.... a top 4 crest.

ST JOE MO Historical Crests
(1) 32.07 ft on 07/26/1993
(2) 27.20 ft on 04/29/1881
(3) 26.82 ft on 04/22/1952
(4) 25.78 ft on 03/03/1979
(5) 25.63 ft on 10/13/1973
(6) 25.60 ft on 06/16/1984
(7) 25.26 ft on 05/07/2007
(8) 24.50 ft on 05/01/1844
(9) 23.84 ft on 05/14/1995
(10) 23.80 ft on 01/26/1987

Good evening everyone,
Wow, one thunderstorm developed near Hiawatha and is now severe! There wasn't supposed to be any thunderstorms, but this one little storm found some kind of energy. It is pretty strong, too. Golf ball sized hail! Heading southeast.

Good evening fellow bloggers-

I'm returning from Spencer, IA and from about Omaha on driving south on I-29 we've been watching a nice storm brew. I've been watching the radar from the iPhone and a little disappointed that its just sitting in NE Kansas.  It has been a nice lightning storm to watch as the sun started to set.

Have a good night!

I have family that lives in Mason City, Iowa which has been shown on the news for the extreme flooding there.  Their water treatment plant was flooded yesterday and was closed down-no running water for the entire town!  Luckily my grandmother who is in her 80's keeps several gallons of water on hand.  Be thankful tonight when you take a shower, flush the toilet, and brush your teeth.  The old record for the Winebego River was set in 1933 and this flood beat that record by THREE FEET!  Talk about squashing a record!  Let's hope we won't see anything close to that near us.  And let's hope the rain turns off in the northern states.
