Tornado Watch and stalled front

Good late afternoon bloggers,

A Tornado Watch is now in effect!

We will be tracking this weather situation for you with the best weather tools available, on NBC Action News.

The front is still stalled just north of Kansas city.  Showers and thunderstorms are developing all along the front.  This is still looking like a heavy rain event tonight.  But, there will be a few severe thunderstorms this evening.  The main threat is hail and strong winds, but one or two tornadoes are possible in the entire area.

3 to 6 inches of rain will likely fall somewhere near Kansas City.  This would create some serious flooding.

Gary

Well last night was a stormy one in St. Joe, I tried to post after 2 a.m. but it just said Error.  I heard the sirens going off in Elwood from my house in St. Joe when the tornado warnings were going off for Northeast Ks.  then we had a good light show for a long time and finally the storms moved in with very heavy rain and lots of lightning and some wind, well now it looks like there will be some neat looking lightning to my south tonight as you guys have your heavy rain event.

I was wondering the same thing as Kimberly.  My son has baseball practice at 6:45...curious as to if there will be practice.

Wow.. 80's flashbacks...

Looks like almost every storm is headed almost perfectly to the NE.  If we are lucky, we won't have anything major fure up SW of us.  Cross your fingers and maybe we'll get to skip the beatings tonight. (Just as soon nobody got a beating, but that's not realistic this time of year.)

Is anyone else's workplace filled with newly arrived people from India, just off the plane,  who don't understand much English?  My floor is teeming with them, let alone the whole company.   The other day when it was supposed to be the worst outbreak since the Super Outbreak I tried to explain "tornado" and "basement" and make a noise like the tornado siren and they didn't even know if their apartment building had a basement.  I had to draw a picture of a tornado and write down the URL to the TV station.   I asked the guy I talked to to please explain to his friends.   We're on the top floor at my company surrounded by glass.  We have a signal that means to go down to a certain floor but the people from India don't work for our company.  They work for an outsourcing company and just sit in these booths.  I think they even bring their own computers.   I bet the company they work for is some out-sourcing outfit in (well, who knows where!) and hasn't explained about tornados in the least, such as, don't go outside, don't get in your car, etc.

Something to keep in mind, if you watched last night's storms, it was the same patten, a stalled front that only seemed to move when the storms behind it pressed them out, causing the bow echo like it did last night.  As long as the front stays stalled and a system behind it does not develop, then the storms should stay along the stall line and continue to shif torwards the northeast.  I would expect by around 7 this evening, that the system will explode and will press into our area, as activity off to our west will advance in as well, pressing these storms into our area with another bow echo. Just my prediction.

Mark, Definitely too early to be asking that question man. The upper low hasn't quite yet interacted with the front down here yet. when that happens, thunderstorms will explode on the front and then once that happens I'll have a better idea where the thunderstorms are going and how long it'll take them to get here. But right now I can tell you it's gonna be a while, unless something isolated pops up ahead of the front.

Good late afternoon again!!! Currently sitting at 91 here in SW Lawrence with gusty South winds.

I am still watching those storms that are firing just NW of Emporia-they are really growing and Are in what I think is a more favorable enviornment as it has been warmer down there today. Will be interesting to watch those and see what they do-they have really grown in the past 45 minuets.

On a different note: anybody looked at the satelite imagery of the main Upper Level Low spinning along the border-man that is massive-quite the pic and one can see why we are having the weather we are having-its circulation is reaching the Nebraska/Kansas border. By the way, still snow advisories in Wyoming-I think I am going to chase some snow LOL!!!

The reality is that for every disappointment, there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of people who are glad the severe weather did not occur. For every thrill of seeing a tornado, or watching a super cyclone develop, there are people who are facing economic ruin. To say you are thrilled to see a tornado and not understand the economic and personal destruction they cause seems to me to be the depth of ignorance.

The insurance we all pay is driven to some degree by the losses covered by weather. And to personally attack someone who both understands the thrill of stormchasing and has seen first hand the utter destruction severe weather, and tornadoes, have caused seems to me highly unfair.

To all the trained meteorologists I thank you for keeping things in perspective. I know they have seen the terrible effects of weather. When people choose to leave because of the personal attacks and what is seen as ignorance, I see nothing wrong with saying goodbye. Leave her alone and learn what tornadoes really do to people.

Right now, the training seems to be setting up to the NW of immediate KC.  Is it possible the heaviest rainfall will occur from Topeka to St. Joe, then the line will begin to progress east and KC itself will have less of a major flood threat, provided the line continues to move and does not stall over us?  Of course, all that water falling to the NW has to drain into the Kansas and Missouri rivers and head for KC, so it's not good for Parkville, Riverside, and points E along the river.

Only 0.25" of rain so far since last night at KCI....

Did any of you see the footage a few minutes ago on NBC 41 of the storm chasers in Iowa who were literally close enough to a tornado to have their ears pop?  No one should put themselves in a position storm chasing where they are that close to a tornado.  How long will it be before a storm chaser or chasers die because they got too close to the show?  Don't know who the folks in the video were, but I hope they were amateurs.  A professional storm chaser should know better.

The training is definitely establishing itself from Topeka towards St. Joe.  I've observed many situations like this over the years, and in my experience storms like this train in the beginning part of their evolution, remain stationary for a period of one to three or four hours, then they begin to move east and rarely will such a system stall again once it has begun to move.  That gives me hope that the immediate metro will be spared the 3+ inches of rain.  So maybe we'll only get 1-2 inches of rain here, let's hope.

with very little activity out west influencing the stalled front,it may take a while. Thus the concern for flodding.   The biggest influence for this stalled front to change is a storm system to flare up and press the stalled front ourtward, most likly causeing a bow echo. However  activity down south may end up firing up making it way up our way.

There have been multiple reports of brief tornado touchdowns and no word on any damage.
Brian1234, your parents (hopefully) are seeing the rain-wrapped wedge funnel cloud. I don't believe that thing is on the ground, because if it was, there'd be a tornado emergency for southeast Topeka. Let me know if you get any reports of damage, though.

A discrete watch is technically not "extended," what happens is the SPC may issue a new watch that overlaps the former watch and carries further into time.  But the net effect is that if you are in a location where the new watch overlaps the old watch, you are still under a watch and so it seems extended.

Okay for those who are interested,

I never left my location (my house) because the tornado was heading right towards me.  We started getting very heavy rain and the sky just to my south became a much darker green and I think the circulation, funnel, tornado was there but I could not see anything because of the rain.  At the same time we had strong winds of about 50MPH or so. As it passed we received quarter size hail.

I have the TV on but I have not heard any reports of damage.  We are in another severe thunderstorm warning for another cell following the same path but it apparently does not have any rotation. Pretty wild for a bit.  Stay safe everyone! Mike

Topeka is out of the woods as far as tornadoes are concerned...for now. The storm in Emporia is going to miss the city to the north. The storms are starting to form a line, which means some straightline winds. If it bows out enough, we could have a repeat of May 1, where most of the metro reported hurricane force winds (at my house in N Shawnee we clocked 80-85 mph). The storms are also training (moving over the same area time and time again) because Topeka's under its third thunderstorm warning in the last hour. This indicates very heavy rain which will aggravate the present flooding situation.

Debster, my prayers go out to your mother. There is a tornado warning in West and Central Osage County. There is a tornado on the ground, reported by spotters. The radar also looks pretty juicy, but nothing like F5 tornadoes along the lines of OKC, Greensburg, and Parkersburg, Iowa. We have heavey rain with some gusty winds here in SW Lawrence right now. Biggest question now: does the line stay put for a spell or continue to push South East-there has been some development back by Wichita so if this line stays fairly put for a couple of hours, Lawrence could have some definite flood issues.

Take care everyone

  CONCERNING...TORNADO WATCH 514...

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 514 CONTINUES.

TORNADO WATCH 514 CONTINUES UNTIL 03Z ACROSS EASTERN KS/NORTHERN MO
INTO SOUTHERN IA/FAR WEST CENTRAL IL. CURRENT THINKING IS THAT A
REPLACEMENT WATCH WILL BE REQUIRED BY 0230-03Z FOR MUCH OF THE

  MO.

A BROKEN BAND OF SUPERCELLS CONTINUE WITHIN A CORRIDOR FROM SOUTH
CENTRAL KS /NEAR WICHITA/ INTO NORTHEAST KS AND NORTHWEST/NORTH
CENTRAL MO AS OF 0100Z...WITH A DISTINCT SEVERE THREAT LIKELY TO
INCREASE INTO THE KC METRO AREA OVER THE NEXT HOUR. A FEW TORNADOES
HAVE ALREADY BEEN REPORTED ACROSS EAST CENTRAL KS...WITH LARGE HAIL
AND AN INCREASING DAMAGING WIND THREAT LIKELY AS WELL. SUPERCELLS
WILL REMAIN COMMON WITHIN THIS CORRIDOR OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS
AMIDST 45-60 KT OF EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR...WITH A MOIST AND UNSTABLE
BOUNDARY LAYER /AROUND 70F DEWPOINTS/ AND SUFFICIENT LOW LEVEL
HODOGRAPHS /150-200 MS/S2 0-1 KM SRH/ MAINTAINING SOME THREAT FOR
  TORNADOES.

ADDITIONAL STRONG/SEVERE TSTMS MAY CONTINUE TO INCREASE SOUTHWEST OF
THE WICHITA AREA INTO THE REST OF FAR SOUTH CENTRAL KS AND PERHAPS
FAR NORTH CENTRAL OK THIS EVENING. AN EASTWARD PIVOTING SHORTWAVE
TROUGH ACROSS THE CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS...AND AN INCREASING LOW LEVEL
JET...MAY FOSTER ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT INTO THESE AREAS EVEN IN THE
PRESENCE OF AMPLE CAPPING /AS SEEN IN EARLIER 18Z LAMONT OK RAOB/.
OTHERWISE...CURRENT THINKING IS THAT A REPLACEMENT WATCH FOR WW 514
WILL BE REQUIRED FOR MUCH OF THE REGION PRIOR TO 03Z. IN ADDITION TO

  DISTINCT POSSIBILITY.

chieffan07, I would NOT rely on the most of the fellow bloggers for an opinion on whether your severe threat is over.  It's like asking a mechanic for medical advice.  There are some bloggers on here who are very well educated in this area, but 99 percent do not have the knowledge of the weather staff here.

As far as some posting info and telling people whether they are safe, don't give people a false sense of security.  Let Gary and staff tell people if they are safe.  Right now, they are very, very busy tracking this storm.  If you tell them not to worry about taking precautions or contribute to them letting their guards down and something happens, best of luck.  You'll need a good attorney, not to mention a way to escape your conscience.

Chief, I'm no expert, but your out of both the tornado watch and your not in the t-storm watch, so the severe threat for wind & tornados is probably over.  Lightening and flooding could still be problematic, if your in a low, or flood prone area, please do be careful.  Make sure you have a landline phone (not portable), weather radio and flashlights.  Gary just said on tv, the biggest threat is flooding.

Hey Matt. I know that not all of the bloggers have the expertise that the weather team does but I trust Hail. I believe that he has always givin me the best information that he possibly can and when I can't watch Gary and the weather team, he and Simplykristi are who I turn to. But thank you for the concern.

I have a question...I am using that SWIFT radar.  It shows big and little yellow circles on it that I take to mean rotation, and also it shows little red upside down triangles I take to mean possible tornadic conditions.  The NOAA and the tv do not talk about this at all. So what does all that mean?  The tv and NOAA have missed tornadic stuff before just this year even.  So should I be worried? It is heading my way.  Even if the "experts" say the tornado threat is over?  Just last Thursday I was watching this SWIFT and all the circles and red triangles go over my house than they issue a tornado warning for Johnson county MO that is a mile from my house from these same circles and triangles.  Is SWIFT wrong or is the media and NOAA missing it?

Back satelitte finely came back on.  We lost electricity  briefly.  We had strong winds and some bright lightening, along with an inch of rain.  Listening to scanner sounds like parts of town lost power (ottawa)(=me in between ottawa and pomona)

Wind was very strong down here in drexel, 60+, no hail, lots of lightning, raining moderately, look like more strong storms in line to hit us.

Matt, I'm no expert as I said, all I did was convey information from the national weather service and Gary, with a little common sense about what to have handy at hand.
Things tonight do change, these storms just keep building and morphing, and I've been sitting here for hours trying to find a dry few minutes just so I can get my dogs out.  Lord knows, I won't go to bed until this clears out.
So Cheifs, just keep watching Gary, he'll keep you informed.  :o)

Matt,  some of rely soley on this blog when we lose satelitte.  Hail and others are our only source of information.  The weather team usually doesn't post when they are busy on the air.  I trust hail and some of the others.

Nice heavy rain and lots of lightning and thunder here near the Triangle.  Weather radio continues to go off now and again.  I think I might move the radio to the kitchen where I can still hear it but just so its not in our bedroom going off all night.

Matt P- No one said anything about dampening anyone's enthusiasm I am just saying I appreciate it.  I have great common sense but it doesn't stop me from wanting storms.  My ultimate experience would be to be able to go storm chasing.  I need that to be on the top of my bucket list!

Thanks StormWyndd. Actually, flooding is the one thing that I'm not really worried about. We up pretty high and if it floods up here then somebody better start building a big boat. LOL.

Also, thanks again Hail. I've been watching the radar for a little while and I think my area is about done. Unless there is supposed to be any redevelopment of storms.

Thanks.

We are at 2.2 inches now.  Still lots of thunder and lightning going on.  Loving it!  I hope that I am not offending anyone with my excitement but it's alot like the movie Twister to me.  Had the firsthand tornado experience as a little kid and been hooked ever since.

I don't expect redevelopment Chief, once a big line of storms moves through it stabalizes the atmosphere to the point where storms really have a hard time redeveloping.. especially at night.

Hail-
I don't think that cell is yet. But it looks close on the radar. It is still lightning here a lot and a few rumbles of thunder but thats about it.

Does anybody know if the storms near Great Bend are supposed to make it here. And if so, about what time and are they expected to be severe? I think a couple of people have already asked about them but I didn't see any answers.

Thanks.
