NBC Action Weather Blog

Oh my! What a night!

Good late evening bloggers,

Wow!  Did you get to see the tornadoes caught live on Skytracker and NBC Action News?  Wow, again!  I don't know if anyone else caught it but it was amazing.  I am going to find the tape of when I first saw it developing and show it Friday.  As the cell passed Lawrence, we had Skytracker in the correct position to see the tornado developing near DeSoto and Linwood.  Fortunately, it never got any worse.

We will look ahead on Friday.  Maybe tornado season will just fade away, but another chance of significant thunderstorms is showing up late Sunday or Monday.

Have a great night.

Gary

I had to run downstairs when the weather radio went off and I missed Gary's total rain fall forecast. Is the southern area (Miami/Linn) still under the gun for 3+ inches by morning. When is this rain event suppose to exit the area?

We can see the lightning off to the west and north from Sedalia. It is already quite impressive since the storm to the west is still about 50 miles away. We had some very brief rain a few minutes ago. Looking at the radar, it looks like it came from a thin line out ahead of the storms. What is that line from?

This video also goes to show that even when there is not a well defined funnel on the ground it does not mean the circulation is not on the ground, for at times even when the funnels seemed to have dissolved a bit the power lines were still being blown, unreal, and tonight is like the third or fourth time in like a week that I have seem mammatus clouds!!

So far, power has stayed on and there's no river's running through the basement - yet.
Sure hope that MCS fizzles!

hey everyone,

chased the storm tonight, decent footage, but nothing really worth showing to be honest.as a matter of fact i took k-10 a little past bonner springs and there she was. As short lived as it was it was still the first tornado i have seen this season, better late than never. where i was driving it was hard to see but i intercepted it at just the right time cause when i came up the gravel hill, there she was coming right at me about 1 mile away, so by the time I got out to shoot footage, she had retreated. I followed the cell up past bonner springs, and it was gone.  But still a successful chase.

One tornado report that was shown to touch down for about 15 seconds, two hail reports that are considered to be at severe levels, and one wind report.

Four reports.

Pounded.  I bet folks yesterday would loved to have had this level of being "pounded".

Just asking..would all the other days this year where we have had more than four reports in the metro/burbs be considered...say...devastating?

I wasn't even really sure I went through the line until I saw the smoke from the grain mills there drifting south.. then the thing back built until the sun went down.. Wow...

About an inch and a quarter in the gauge in KCK at N 18th and State last I looked at about 10 PM.. with back-building continuing.

Exceptional day and especially evening.

And I was asking about the front. I don't think it has passed through us yet. If Scott is still around maybe he can weigh in.
As for getting pounded, they were pretty intense storms! And if you look at Local Storm Reports, there have been several more than just four reports. I see 4 just north of KC alone, then several in Cass county and Jackson county. But whatever. I'm still more curious about where the front is.

Gary I am sure I am not the only who has noticed this.  It seems that this year the area around Eudora/De Soto/Tonganoxie/Linwood has been the place where an awful lot of the severe weather has gotten its act together and moved across the KC metro area this year.  The cells might have been born further west or southwest but when they get to that area it seems that is where they seem to start dropping funnels over and over again.  Its just amazing that every time they rise back up and move on and not develop further or stay on the ground and gain strenght into an EF-2 grade.  It just seems to me that the area from Eudora from 24/40 to K-10 and then on east up to about De Soto and I guess on across the river has just been a major source of energy climax for severe weather this year.  Hope I haven't made this more complicated than what it appears.

Just stopping by the blog before I go to bed....  The storm was a yawner here....  I sat outside on the covered part of my deck during the storm talking with family and friends.  I loved watching the heavy rain and lightning.  I know not a smart move but I didn't care.  Yeah the most we had were some gusty winds and heavy rain.  I had an inch of rain in my gauge.

I have been listening to a live stream out of Cedar Rapids...  CR is experiencing record flooding.  The estimate river stage (lost gauge due to flooding) tonight is 30.3 and the crest is expected at 31.8 later today.  You can catch the live stream at http://www.kcrg.com/

Kristy,

It sure is! And Level 2 is even more awesome now with the super resolution radar now installed at Pleasant Hill. If you haven't already, look at my page and then look at the difference in resolution between the "local radar" and the "Super Res Radar." It is really awesome. I see little features that you would never see on NWS or Wunderground, or even ESP radars, like little hooks that show up sometimes several minutes before tornado warnings are issued.

I had my NOAA weather radio going, and those guys are pretty accurate predictors of current storms, even if their speech synthesizer is a bit wonky.

I heard the severe thunderstorm warning around 8:15, stating that the storm should hit "Lake Wa-oo-come-us" at 8:40.

I live directly north of Lake Waukomis, and at 8:40 on the dot, hail
started falling. Not too much of it, and not too big, but it arrived
on time, by Thor!

Let me add my thanks to the weather team for keeping on top of things.  I wonder if poor Russ will ever dry out!

yes I did make those predictions and I was off by 45 minutes or so. considering i got off work at 7 drove from k-10 and ridgeview back to thie middle of overland park, grabbed my gear and drove out through k-10 to desoto, knowing where the storm would hit, i was in route to my intercept location before anyone else , even skytracker,    If i had my gear with me before i left at 7 am this morning, I would not have had to back track i would have been there 30 minutes before hand. A little field expereince paid off, so if your gonna waste your time going through bloggs then have at it, just look at the time stamps of them, I was only off by about 45 minutes or so. and i would not have spent an hour driving time and backtracking if i was not pretty certin I would not get results. I am not a pro, nor do I claim to be. I'm  more of a hobbiest  of 12 years indoing this. I don't get much of a chance anymore but i try. i'm still damn good at it.

I thought I would share my experience tonight with you all, hoping everyone would enjoy it, but instead I've got someone like you trying to discredit me. Why?

just a blog or not, learn some respect and state all the facts before attempting to make somebody look stupid.

Brian don't worry about it. Scott just likes to debate. I used to get emotional(still do sometimes) and it doesn't do any good so you just have to try and ignore some of those comments sometimes.

Aurora I've always called that kind of lightning spider lightning.  Mainly because it looks like a web.  Sometimes I'll even call it web lightning.  Mainly spider though.

Are we supposed to have an MCS happen here tonight?

Anyone still in here?  I am back at my house now.  Got scared earlier in the evening and decided to head where there was a basement and just ended up staying because I didn't want to drag my son home in the lightening so we waited until it let up...which took until now, lol.  Hope everyone was safe tonight and Jonathan I hope you enjoyed watching the storms roll in! :)

David,
I noticed a TVS down in southern Bates County a week ago Monday right before a Tornado Warning was issued for the cell.  WOW Amazing on that radar!  I wish I could afford GRLevelx.

Jonathan,
I enjoy Scott's analysis. :)  I have known Scott for over a year here thru the blog.  There's been some rumbling around here. :)  I can see a pond in my neighbor's yard.

Brian,

Praise is better when others bestow upon you - rather than you almost demand it!

I think most folks try to be light hearted here - this is a weather blog and all of us try to have some fun either because we love weather, or because we have a curiosity or fear.

In the same post that you were pointing out how great your predictions were you were also pointing out that others were less great than you. You stated: "i remember stating earlier today that they said that the storms would not be much of anything" - humility my friend! They they you are referring to are often correct (as they were tonight). Respect is earned not demanded!

Have fun - do your best and trust me praise will come! Avoid however trying to make others look bad in order for you to look good!

I hope the worse is over for tonight - I see some storm forming towards Colorado and they can add to our rain problem if they track the same way the rest of the storms did tonight.

Good night everyone!

John
