12:10 PM UPDATE ON THE T-STORMS

The line of T-Storms has been struggling this morning as they hav been in an area of lower dewpoints & it is just not quite warm enough.  However, they have entered the northern part of the Kansas City metro area & are showing signs of intensification as the air near I-70 is more unstable.  It looks like the line of T-Storms will cross the whole area north to south between now & 2 PM.  After the main line of T-Storms we will see lingering rain & a few T-Storms until 3-4 PM.

Right now most of the T-Storms are below severe limits.  This could change quickly as they are now intensifying.  We can most likely expect 40-60 mph winds & a 20 minute period of very heavy rain with the main line.  Areas south of the river may expericence more severe T-Storms as they are gaining strength as they move south.

Gary will be having updates on NBC Action News during the next 2-3 hours & we will have nore on this blog later today.

Shelf Clouds develop along gust fronts, which is basically cold outflow coming out from thunderstorms, basically which is keeping these thunderstorms in Check at the moment.

Jonathan, Thank you for the heads up. I had been lurking on the blog on and off all morning and preemptively gave it to her a little while ago.

Over the last 15 minutes it has become increasingly darker here. Feels like it is 8:45 pm out right now with how dark it is. Wind gusts are becoming more frequent and quite strong. I have no idea how to judge wind speed so I wont even try but they seem pretty strong. No rain yet here in Fairway.

yeah Mark there is a gust front that's snuck it's way out ahead of the thunderstorms which is causing your pre storm wind gusts. it's actually saving everybody and keeping the storms from getting any stronger because as long as winds are blowing out of the storms it prevents updrafts in the storms from becoming super explosive.

Wind just blew here about 10 minutes ago while I was outside.  Guessing the max gust might have been around 35mph.  Stirred the tree's around, but wasn't enough to knock any limbs down.  Whew.  Have one more flower pot to 'unhang'.  Most notable thing was the drop in temps when the gust front came through.  It's much cooler.  Hopefully that will temper these storms and keep them under severe limits.

Just heard from a family member that spoke to a weather person that said  supposedly they are thinking of dropping the watch box? (Different station)

Has anyone heard this?   The explanation I was given was that every time the storms try to intensify & form hail that it is just too weak.

Just curious if this might be true?  I don't know I think those storms still look pretty nasty!

Is anyone seeing this?  Would love some thoughts on it.

Apparently what happened was the storms fired up and were intense and then they encountered low dewpoints so they weakened. so the updrafts started collapsing. therefore cold air rushed out from them(the outflow boundary/gust front and ever since, the storms have been trying to restrengthen but they can't because they've suffocated themselves inside their own cold pool created by themselves. those down to the south if the storms can outrun that outflow boundary and restrengthen it could become a PDS again but it  doesn't look that way any time soon.

Hail Jon -

That appears to be what happened here in SOKC.  It got much cooler about 10 mintues before the storm hit.  I'm not sure what normally happens, but it seems like it usually gets cooler for at most a couple minutes before rain starts.  Anyhow, very little wind, light to moderate rain and minimal lightning.  Not even up to calibar of a good 'ol fashioned midwest t-storm.  And, I am 100% completely happy for that.

Luthor...with a truly mature thunderstorm. you want the rain and wind (and the getting cooler) to start roughly about the same time as the rain starts. if there is any delay between the wind and the rain usually it means the thunderstorm is having trouble maintaining it's intensity and will often die off but in this case it's still moving through enough unstable air to at least sustain it. so that's why it's not completely dying. Like I said earlier. if that outflow boundary washes out  and warm air as an opportunity to feed itself back into the thunderstorms then there could be problems to the south. But anywho...i'm gonna go conk out for a while. see you guys!

Hi, I'm  new. The sky really looks like a bad-boy; apparently there's no severe storm watch/warning here.  It's kind of hard not to be primed to hit the deck these days.
On the edge of SE Lee's Summit, I see very dark clouds in the west and just now hearing thunder, pretty windy and have to turn the lights on.  Lots of low wispy clouds boiling around and a few drops just started.  It's 1:24pm.

We missed the weather watcher classes this past spring, but I don't want to wait until next year to learn.  Would anybody like to recommend a storm watch book for dummies or a website for beginners that starts with rock-bottom basics?

The fact we were under a PDS was pretty ridiculous given that Shawnee got one brief period of heavy rain, some lightning, and one wind gust that approached (and this is stretching it) 60 mph. However, the PDS extends all the way to near Wichita and, like Hail said, the cap is breaking down south with extremely high humidity. However, it seems unlikely that any storm will produce over 60 mph winds from here on out. Whoever is concerned about this afternoon: severe threat is essentially over. Storms are possible through early evening, since there are still regular thunderstorms up north. Those could just impact the eastern side of the metro.

siegel12,

PDS is issued when the conditions are favorable - the conditions still are favorable.

But even if sever weather erupts it will not be affecting the whole warned area but a very small portion. A watch is an advanced heads-up, even a warning does not mean that everyone in the area will experience the severity.

While I think most of the severity is behind us - still the conditions are making prudence the best option.

Enjoy the turn of events!

Thanks for the explanation. I love to read and watch all this stuff, especially when we are getting ready to head out camping. Too many times we've been caught in an area without knowing what is coming. Now I make sure we have a weather radio at home and one in the camper.
From what I gather it looks like some of the watch area has been cancelled but iin reading some of the discussions (at least for the area we live in) looks like they expect more storms to fire up later this afternoon.
Sure did cool off though compared to earlier today.
