2:00 PM UPDATE

Well, the T-Storms moved through Kansas City fairly innocent with winds of 30-50 mph & very brief downpours as they just moved through too early.  It was not unstable enough.  They are now getting their act together from Pettis & Saline counties southward as they enter an environment with temperatures in the 80s & dewpoints in the 70s.  It is southwest Missouri & southeast Kansas along with eastern Oklahoma & Arkansas that will have the best shot at widespread severe T-Storms as this complex rapidly moves south into very unstable air.

All we can expect is lingering showers & T-Storms until around 4 PM with temperatures in the 60s & 70s.  Additional rainfall for our area will be .05-.40".

Have a good Sunday afternoon & night.

Once again the SPC over did the threat of severe weather.  There was no reason that a PDS watch needed to be issued.  This is now the second time they have done this and it is really getting old that they continue to scare people with the threat and it lands up being in the 60's with just some nice soaking rainfall.  My feeling is that the watch will be cancelled soon as the chance of severe weather is pretty much gone.

Have a great day!

Oh phooey! That means those storms are getting organized before they reach me. So the PDS might really apply for down here in Joplin. From the looks of the storm right now, it might just clip me. :::shakes head::: It's always something.

Hope everyone is having a nice Fathers Day.

I agree Jacob. Even on the blog it became an OMG, a PDS, which is why we have to be very careful about getting all our info from here unless posted by the weather team. We all got worried (concerned) about this situation, alerted family, changed plans, and all for a regular old thunderstorm. I guess the NWS has to do this to cover themselves when the conditions are favorable but this is the second PDS watch in as many weeks and those things did not materialize for us.

Just a question...

I noticed development on a line from north of St. Joe to Marysville (KS/NE border) and then smaller storms from Marysville to n of Salina.  In fact, north of St. Joe seems to be growing.  Is this the storms last gasp or is there potential for more rain?  I read Jeff's entry and I don't want to sound like several of the posters on here who second guess everything, but it wasn't what I expected to see after reading the blog entry.  I love me some Jeff Penner!  I just was expecting to see it.  Any ideas?

I'm all for not getting hyped up, that said when the NWS puts out something as dangerous as a PDS watch I still think it's better to be safe & be aware, then be sorry & ignore it just because a few (not all)  bloggers don't think it will do anything.

If it didnt/doesnt do anything wonderful, you few just go ahead & brag & pat yourselves on the back all you want to, as for me I will go by what the experts here & at the NWS say & alert family for the possibility of bad weather.  Better safe than sorry.

For those who are getting bad weather please stay safe!

Um, I don't think I said it wouldn't do anything. I said this is the second time in 2 weeks a PDS was put out and nothing happened in our immediate area. Of course, we should all be aware , that goes without saying. But when people see that kind of warning, many go into panic mode as we have seen before. Given the type of weather the midwest has experienced lately that's understandable that some would get really worried. But even the weather team did not go into panic mode during this because if you recall, a few were complaining that no one was breaking in with updates this morning when tehre really wasn't anything to say at the time.

Because things do not materialize, that should be a blessing.  Considering the huge values right now supporting very strong thunderstorms, the PDS was warranted.

The only thing really lacking nearby was enough instability.  Consider us lucky to not have to worry about it.

The watch is to gain awareness...and it succeeded.  As the atmosphere needs many things to be just right for severe weather, it is quite possible in areas where it may not come to fruition.

The SPC looks over a broad area where conditions are favorable.  I believe it says this in the text of each watch.  Because it did not happen in your backyard does not mean it was a bust.

Just means we lucked out...I can think of many that would like to "luck out"

While it is easy to reflect upon what did or did not happen, until you are the one making the decisions based on your many years of intense training, it might be a bit over the top to call out all those that are trained in looking at this.

I am happy it missed as I can enjoy my Father's Day in peace...leave the bad weather for someone else...

Folks,

As I posted in the previous blog topic - the watch was appropriately issued and we should refrain from making negative statements.

I bet you that some people in the watch area did get scary weather - just because you or I did not it means nothing.

People died in the last PDS watch - not here - not everyone in a tri-state warning area will be affected. Ultimately it is personal responsibility to head the warnings or not.

Be safe!

The PDS things are such a double edged sword in my opinion.  I was about to say that I agree the PDS for our area was completely unnecessary, but it looks like it might be merited down further to the south.  However I see the point that if they continue to issue PDS's for our area in situations like this that people will start to take them less and less seriously which could be a pretty bad thing.

Anyways, I'm glad this seems like it was a pretty minor event for the KC metro!

I would rather see a high risk I guess than a PDS. And even a high risk gets people pretty worried. KsWX I don't mean to sound like I'm second guessing, but it does tend to scare people and we've seen the people who come on really scared over even a slight risk so you can imagine how they feel when they find out what a PDS means. I just think maybe it should have been issued south and north of us.

Chase, I couldn't have said it better than you did at 2:41 pm!

When church was over (in Leavenworth) the wind was blowing very hard and the skies looked very ominous.  Against my better judgment, I headed home.  It got progressively and quickly worse.  It started raining, lightning, and thunder all the time with the wind blowing harder and harder.  When I drove in just off the road ahead of me just enough to clear the road was a good-sized tree branch blocking my driveway.  It was too far for me to walk to my house, so I was just getting out of my car to attempt to move the branch when a young friend from church came from nowhere , it seemed, (actually from his parents' car), and moved it for me.   I drove on to my house and was getting out of my car when he reappeared as he wanted to make sure I got safely into the house.  He was my quiet angel!  Also, his family!

Our weather radio forecast had been thunderstorms at 1:00 pm.  They were an hour late on the forecast!

Those who may get tired of PDS's that come to nothing...remember Sunday May 4 2003?  It didn't even seem like tornado weather at my house in Brookside.  I had heard from some people in Warrensburg that it was going to be bad the next day and I hadn't heard about it so I came home a day early from camping out in Warrensburg.  I didn't know about PDS's but I was looking after my aging parents so I started googling the weather that morning and found the PDS and everyone on weather sites hitting the ceiling talking about 60,000 foot tops and troughs and drylines.  I didn't know what that meant either.  The sun was shining and not a cloud in the sky!  Not one of my friends knew anything was supposed to happen.  Some of my friends were out running around doing nature hikes and what-all.

Nevertheless the ominous wording on the computer prompted me to call my parents and tell them to be watching the weather and ready to go to the basement about 4 p.m. if anything happened.  They live in an old people's patio home subdivision.  Did they listen to me, NO, they went to bed for their Sunday afternoon nap.  But if not for my phone call maybe they would have been out at some church picnic or puttering in the garden or down in the neighbors garage jawing about  these young whippersnappers with their boombox cars.

That F-4 tornado hit their house out of NOWHERE, they had about 15 seconds to get to the basement.  By the way their neighbors garage that they could have been in, collapsed with a huge beam across the cars and the other neighbor's house was *completely gone* except for the hole in the floor that that led to the basement.   It did not look like tornado weather or stormy.  I know it did not really come out of nowhere...it was a PDS that day...but it didn't *look* like one!  All day it was an outbreak and it never did look stormy at my house.  My other friends were standing on a ridge overlooking the river when their ears began to pop and they *still* didn't know anything was going on!  They said "We'd better get out of here" based solely on their ears popping!

So I say bring on the OMG's and the PDS's, because it does not always look like stormy weather when it really is the big one.

Sun is beginning to peak through here in chillicothe with the cold front still well off to our northwest, doesnt that mean that when it starts to move through the sun would have destabilized the air enough for random thunderstorms to develop right along the front? i believe my thinking is right on that one.

Wow, here off 291 and Stark, didn't quite get golf ball size, but definitely marble and bigger.  Started hailing before it even started raining, hailed for what seemed like forever, then rain.  While it was coming down, the street and driveways were covered, but that quickly melted.  There is a bunch in the grass, and our deck is partly covered.

So...we've only owned a home for a year and a half...how do you know when hail is big and hard enough to call your insurance agent?

Generally it takes Golfball size to start causing some serious damage, and of course anything larger then that can cause real problems. If you had marble size hail, no need to contact your insurance agent.

Well another wild weather day in St. Joe, this morning we had the storms roll through and even though they did weaken, they still brought strong north winds, heavy rain, and very impressive clouds as the main gust front approached. I watched as a medium sized limb fell and missed one of our vehicles by inches. For a time 3000 people were without power here in St. Joe, we also lost other old limbs that broke in the storm a week ago but were still hanging in the tree.  Mother nature has been doing ALOT of pruning here in St. Joe lately!!

Nicole that's always a neat phenomenon to see. sometimes when you are that far away from a thunderstorm you can see "sprites" or "jets" emit from the top of a thunderstorm cloud which shoot miles into our atmosphere, and those are created by lightning, I for one have never seen it myself but if you go on you tube and look for "Sprites" I'm sure you'll find something it's pretty incredible.
