Was this a weak tornado?

Good evening everyone,

I am going to post this video from our June 12th 5 PM newscast, two hours before the first small tornado.   What do you think it is?  I believe it is a very weak EF0 tornado, and it is actually similar to one of the much stronger ones that formed later.  I finish off the video with thoughts of the next chance of thunderstorms.

Maybe its related to the LRC.  You know it keeps cycling until it actually touches down and every cycle is a little different to the original.

Hi Gary!

I am confident it is an EF0 - it looks as a text book example!

By all other features, it appears to have been what you think.  While rotation was not very clear and there didn't seem to be debris, it would be consistent for a very weak tornado that did not cause damage.

Very disjointed almost like it didn't want to be there...but all the same, likely an EF-0.

Zeus - like the LRC, it was there for all to see, but most people overlooked it.  Only after the fact upon review was there some evidence of it's existence.

But...like the LRC, even with this evidence, folks at the NWS or other peers likely would dismiss it anyway....

could be a dying ef0, maybe a gustnado, if it were along a boundary, shows rotation at the surface and not up in the clouds at that point.

Looked like a mini-tornado to me, too. Where exactly was that shot taken? I saw the newscast live when you showed it, but I don't remember you saying where it was.

-----------------

It was in northern Leavenworth county.

I don't know very much, but I thought that it looked like a very weak tornado the first time that you showed it live on tv.  Now that I see it again, I still think that it is a tornado.  Have a great day-- and thanks for showing the video again.  I love watching tornados form I just don't want them at my house.  Melissa

Melissa,,

I think that it is unanimous.  No one wants a tornado at their house!  Have a great day, and I agree, it was likely a weak tornado, a very weak one.

Wow!  Can this weather get any more perfect!  Had the house opened up all night- perfect sleeping weather!  The dog loves these cool mornings.  I would like to place an order for at least 60 more days just like today ( one can dream can't they!! ).  Just watched the video again and the first time I saw it as you were reporting it I thought it resembled a weak tornado, so that's what I think it was.  Have a great day!  Dea

Dea,

That video is pretty neat.  As for the weather...that is perfect!  Maybe a few more clouds than some may want this morning.  But overall a very nice day.  No real hot stuff in the next 7 days.  Still waiting for the first 90 of the season in KC.

I am so thrilled with this weeks weather forecast. Perfect for Cub Scout Daycamp.  Even with some rain Thursday and Friday, it will be better than last years over 90 degree days out there.  Does the rain chances for Thursday and Friday have any chance of severe weather?

Severe weather chances look low on Thursday.  I don't want to say no chance, but whatever chances may exist would be very low at this point.

Gary and gang,

As you know we were out that day and saw a lot interesting lowering features around LV County.  We were not able to verify from the ground that particular funnel as we said when we phoned in to you guys.

I think the vid of the Desoto and LV County funnels are very typical of KC area funnels and tornados.  In some ways that can be even more dangerous because it's hard to know if or when to warn when the radar isn't showing a great enough 'to' and 'from' wind velocities to warrant the warn.

That's one of the reasons I really hate chasing in KC other then the terrain.  It's often in low light and they're hop-scotching weak tornados just strong enough to do some real damage when you least expect it.

It's great that you guys were able to catch those with sky tracker, even the small wall cloud, which we probably wouldn't have been able to see from the ground amongst all the dust sucked up in the storm that evening.

Fascinating stuff as usual guys!

Jeff.

Well thats tuff, a couple week ago I saw something like that. A thunderstorm cumulas clouds moved under a lower cloud then started twisting around, I watched it travel acroos the horizon to that point so I think that was what happened. A little cloud formed, moved to a point of slight rotation then formed a funnell. Just rotating fog was what it was probably if you were under it.

I'd like to request a forecast if possible for Cedar Point Ohio, I'm going there to ride come coasters as 1 of my summer vacations from monday evening to friday evening I will be there. What do you think the weather will be like there during that time? Thanks, Byan.

About the picture of the (supposedly) Iowa boy scout camp "tornado" that you said was not real, here is an aritcle from the Mitchell County Press. They showed the same exact picture along with article. It was not the Scout camp tornado, but evidently was actually taken by a woman with her digital camera right as it came near the ground and then went back up. It supposedly happened as seen, right behind those buildings.

What do you think?

Tornado sighted in Orchard; captured on camera

Story created Jun 11, 2008 - 11:05:48 CDT.

After a weekend of heavy rain, wind and flooding across Mitchell County, residents received another round of severe weather Tuesday night.

This time, a tornado was sighted and captured on camera in Orchard. Starting about 8:45 p.m., heavy rain began to fall, accompanied by quarter to golf-ball sized hail which lasted for over 10 minutes. Another severe thunderstorm followed with scattered cloud to ground lightning. At 9:04 p.m. a tornado was sighted touching down in Orchard. According to Lori Mehmen of Orchard, who captured the funnel cloud on her digital camera, the twister came near the ground just briefly and then went back up in the clouds. Besides extensive tree and crop damage, no human injuries were reported.

*******************

This location was no where near the boy scout camp, instead was in northeast Iowa.  Also, there was an exposure used on the camera...not quite sure what kind or how long.  As Gary mentioned this was not a real picture of the boy scout tornado from Little Sioux.

Anybody-
was there any confirmation to what happened in Merriam on June 12th. I drove by that area and it was a mess, but not that bad in the scope of things. It just happened so close to my house that I now have a worried wife.
Any Help?
SLIM

Are you referring to damage?  I've been gone quite a bit over the last week.  I did speak with the NWS today and so far only one tornado has been confirmed from the 12th.  That number may change...but Linwood is it so far.

Jeremy-
yes, there was an article in the paper last week questioning if it was a tornado, micro burst, or straight line winds that caused the damage. the article stated that the way the debris was thrown; people asked if it was a tornado.
