Developing area of thunderstorms

Good afternoon bloggers,

There is a developing area of thunderstorms northwest of Kansas City this afternoon.  A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH has just been issued by the SPC.  Here is the radar image at around 1:30 PM.

The thunderstorms near the Nebraska border seem to be organizing.  This may be a newly developing MCS.  If it is then it could take on some severe thunderstorm bow echo structures to it.  We will be monitoring this closely during the next few hours.

Definitely looks like an MCV is forming near the neb/Kansas border. You can start to see the circulation on the radar loop and a cell in Nemaha county is racing north right towards it instead of southeast. Will be interesting to see what it turns into.

HummerSeeker: No these, will not be ornadic. I mean, the risk is 2% of a tornado with in 25 miles of a point. Plus, the tornado season ended around June 15th. One wuestion I have had today is why is there no slight risk on the MO side but the watch is still there? The thnderstorms are fairily isolated now, bu tif an MCS and/or bow echo develops, I guess MO will have some kind of risk, well, just slight, I guess.

JAYGIRL,

It looks like the system that was fueling the possible bow effect on the storms west of lawrence have weekend considerably. So the storms are not bowing, they are joing up to one cell. The cell to the north, which is moving southeast, is merging with the cell to the south , which is now moving to the northeast. I would think a t-storm warning will be issued with this in the next few minutes.

Brian, kinda cool that you got to chase it but definitely a bummer that you didn't get to record it.  That would have been so wild to watch!  We saw snow last Thursday - and were NOT happy about it!  Those crazy mountains . . .

It's raining very hard with some strong gusts and some lightning here up near Shoal Creek.  Of course, I saw some parents running around with their kids outside while it was lightning all around.  Congratulations on moving into the finals of the Darwin Award.  Then again, I've seen them driving around with their young kids in the front seats.  Yes, he's a cop.  Pretty sad, eh?

That storm in Eastern Jackson County was pretty bad...quarter size hail at my dad's house in Sibley and it almost looked like a wall cloud:

Thunder for the past 15 min. or so and some very light rain (think sprinkles with larger drops) here in Lee's Summit by Lake Lotawana.

Hi, I just got home and missed Gary, what'd he say?

Rain doesn't look very impressive on radar.

That is funky, we are under a SIGNIFICANT WEATHER ALERT FOR NORTHWESTERN JOHNSON...SOUTHEASTERN
JACKSON AND SOUTHWESTERN LAFAYETTE COUNTIES UNTIL 715 PM CDT...
AT 637 PM CDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR WAS TRACKING A STRONG THUNDERSTORM NEAR LONE JACK...OR 6 MILES SOUTHEAST OF LAKE
LOTAWANA...MOVING NORTHEAST AT 15 MPH.

THIS STORM WILL AFFECT MAINLY RURAL AREAS OF NORTHWESTERN JOHNSON...
SOUTHEASTERN JACKSON AND SOUTHWESTERN LAFAYETTE COUNTIES...INCLUDING
THE TOWNS OF LONE JACK AND PITTSVILLE.

WINDS AROUND 50 MPH ARE EXPECTED WITH THIS STORM

The funky part is that it is moving NE not SE. Keeping track of how these storms are moving can be confusing!

-------------

Audra,

It is actually moving east southeast.
