MCS finally forms just east of KC

Good evening bloggers,

An MCS is now maturing just east of Kansas City with some possible flooding rain.  There are spots that are just getting some light rain, but don't worry yet, if you want rain, because an upper level disturbance in Nebraska will come right overhead around 4 AM in the morning.  We are expecting more thunderstorms overnight with this system.

We will update the blog later this evening as we track these features.  There is a lot of lightning for those of you just east of KC, but no severe thunderstorms at this moment.

what do I think. I think the MCS should backbuild and hit my apartment. I thought the blog could use an extra 2 cents. Others will think differently.

Does anyone know where can I purchase the 4" rain gauge that COCORAHS is recommending for reporting rain fall? $8.00 shipping to my location is kinda high.

Lot of thunder and lightening up here.  Was a lot worse an hour ago (heavy rain with a tiny bit of hail), but looks like we're set to go again.

Hi, Gary. Emma MO has received .7" so far and it looks now like a band of heavy rainfall still is pointing at us. Most of the farmers around here have all their corn in but beans are a different story. With this much water, it may be the middle of next week before they can get into some of their fields again. Also, I was on MO 23 north of Knob Noster a while ago and there was significant flash flooding with at least three deep bands of moving water south of the Blackwater Bottoms. Wind was strong and hail between penny and nickel size, as well as I could tell from the safety of my car.

There is a strong line of thunderstorms moving our way from southeast Nebraska.

Is the complex of storms that are on the East side of Nebraska what will come into KC or the ones way out in Western Nebraska?

Here in Liberty we watched the storm go all around.  I live on Southeast side and we ended up with 1/2".  Not that I want 3" or 4" but this pattern is really frustrating!

I am loading video my son took from our house in Sibley.  He was looking to the south towards Buckner.  My brother-in-law was in Buckner at the same time and describes seeing something the same.   What do you think it was.  I guess there was huge hail and SEVERE winds.  It came through Napoleon a little later where I was at the time and we were afraid the windows would break from the hail and wind. After the storm all the homes and cars looked like they had been painted with leaves. The ground was covered in hail and as it melted looked like an ice storm.

That definetly looked like a lowering of the clouds to me, but I have no idea if they were wall clouds or maybe shelf clouds?

We just spent 30 fun-filled minutes in the basement here, north of Warsaw.  A tornado was spotted (so said the NOAA weather radio) about 5 miles away.  It has rained buckets full, haven't been able to go outside yet to check the rain gauge.

Updating Emma, MO: It looks like we're not going to get much before the 10 o'clock news, so I'll post now. We've picked up an additional .98" since 7 p.m. for a grand (sub?) total of 1.75". I'm a pessimist, so I dumped my rain gauge in anticipation of more unneeded rain later.

The creeks around here have stabilized but the Blackwater Bottoms on MO 23 south of Concordia are close to impassable already. No more hail to report, but some of the lightning between 7 and 8 was impressive.

A fun evening in St. Joe, it started around three o'clock when the first area of storms fired up around us, while my house missed the very heavy stuff in that round I got to see the bottom of a building thunderstorm as I was tacking a walk, when I started my walk it was just the dark underside of a large cumulus cloud it seemed, but as time passed it got larger and larger and as I was heading back home I experienced some large rain drops from the underside of the newly developing storm and saw a rain shaft just to my south and east with some thunder.  But the main action for the evening was during and just after the 6 p.m. newscast, as out flow from an area of storms in northern Missouri met up with out flow from an MCS in east Ks. as the two out flows merged storms fired up west to east right over St. Joseph.  as the storms were forming you once again could see the undersides of the large cumulus forming with very neat features formed by the rising air along the converging outflows, it really was cool to "see" what radar was showing with the forming storms on the radar along the convergence as the clouds to my south were moving northeast, while I could tell clouds to my northeast were trying to move southwest and in the middle of that you could see the neat lowering features as the rain shafts formed to my north and east and moved in. Then we got POUNDED with very heavy rain.  Now we have had cool easterly outflow and there is an area of storms trying to come in from the northwest, it will be interesting to see how long they hold together, the cool air might kill them.
