NBC Action Weather Blog

Friday night thunderstorms & fireworks

Good late evening bloggers,

We will be showing the fireworks from Kauffman stadium during our newscast on NBC Action News.

Thunderstorms are holding together at 9:40 PM.  They are just east of St. Joseph and drifting south.  We will show the lightning during our 10 PM newscast as we are seeing a flash every minute or so.  Hopefully it will be timed right when I show the cameras on the air.

We are still in northwest flow aloft. The weekend may see a few thunderstorms as well, but most of Saturday and Sunday look pretty nice.

It is now officially summer!

Have a great weekend.  Don't forget to watch our Saturday and Sunday morning newscasts at 8 AM.

After all the rain that has been around the past few weeks, I finally realized I missed most of the heavy stuff.  All the flowers and plants were droopy today.  I dug a bit into the ground and it is dry.  Doesn't take long in the somewhat heat and sunshine to dry out.  I'll take an inch this weekend.  Good thing is I haven't had to water in several weeks.  I believe those days are over.

It was pretty cool watching that line of showers/t-storms form late this evening from here in Marceline. I was seeing lightning about every 10-15 seconds or so here.

i would like to make a quick comment about what Scott is trying to say in the last blog i am not defending what he is saying or against it just some insight:
The way i am interperting it is he is wondering why KCI has to be the official totals for the KC area? The area of KC is quite a large one. And KCI is on the north side of that area and may best represent the the true weather of the area. While at one time it could be sunny at KCI and pouring rain in Overland Park, or vise versa. This point could be also vaildated with this past winter when the North part of the Area had alot of Snow and the SE part of the metro had little. I think what he might be saying is why not have another official station or move this one. If they had another station they could measure both and average them.
Just some insight.

And, I am saying that it doesn't really matter that much.  We have the rainfall totals from various spots around the city.  The highs and lows, as well.  At the end of each month we can compare these totals, and we do.

Gary,
Recently you mentioned severe weather season is coming to an end.(for the most part). Wow all the sudden like Luthur said it is drying out. When you are outside it just feels different all the sudden. This northwest flow seems to be keeping the rain away from us. How long before we see a different pattern? I am hoping we do not get too hot and dry. I read where Goodland Ks has only had 3.91 year to date. I know they do not get a whole lot of rain, but that is very dry. I have been watching alot of activity out over western Ks. Seems like Goodland has been missed alot. I hope we have a wey summer for a change. I can tell our weather has calmed down the blogs are decreasing as well.
Have a great Saturday

Rodney,

On the calm days we've been working on several things behind the scenes and also there have been a lot of vacations over the past several weeks.  I think even with the fewer blogs we still have updated at least twice a day.  We have recently added more high resolution mapping to our computers.  The new weather page is coming very soon.

Wow Rodney, not sure where you live but we have had anything but dry summers around Paola.  I realize that is quite a ways south of the Metro but I for one am glad to feel the drier air, I'm pretty sure our neighbors to the south in Osawatomie are thinking the same thing.  I'll glady water my flowers but for now, they're still soggy in the ground.  I also realize I'm not the most objective person to talk weather with as I am in the minority loving high temperatures 100+ and sun-filled days, dry days.
Beautiful sunrise this morning, and yes there is a different "feel" to the air.  No rain in Paola last night, quiet night, great sleeping.  Everything just seems lighter, maybe it's the changing of the seasons, Welcome Summer!
Enjoy the day everyone!
