First Weekend of Summer!

Watch NBC Action News HD this weekend at 8am, 5, & 10pm for Kansas City's most accurate forecast!

Summer is finally here!  I remember a lot of people this winter and early spring that were wondering if summer would ever arrive.  It's finally here so let's enjoy the 80s we have in the forecast this weekend.  Really the past 3-5 days have been very nice with morning lows in the 50s to mid 60s and highs in the 80-85 degree range.  Those temperatures have been at or a little below average.  Averages in Kansas City now stand at 65 & 85.

More nice weather is in the weekend forecast with just a couple of bumps here and there with some rain chances.  For today we can expect a lot of sunshine during the morning and should carrying into the afternoon.  High temperatures will peak in the mid 80s in most locations...with a few upper 80s to near 90 possible west or southwest of KC.  Here's the forecast high temperature map for today.

With a weak front/trough dropping into the Midwest late today a few showers and thunderstorms will develop.  These storms will track southeast much like the isolated cells that popped up Friday evening.  The possible storms for today would first move into northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas somtime very late this afternoon or into the evening.  A strong or severe storm can't be ruled out as the area is in a slight risk of severe weather.  The main threat would be hail and strong winds.  The SPC outlook during the overnight hours didn't even have a tornado threat associated with the storms in the Midwest...which is a good thing!

In Kansas City the best chance of seeing a shower or storm would be later this evening and overnight.  Here is the forecast surface map to give you an idea of the trough position by 1 a.m.  Notice the area of thunderstorms that may be moving thru the area.

For Sunday the thunderstorms should be to the south in the morning and with some leftover moisture around the region and the trough nearby a few thunderstorms are possible during the afternoon.  Highs will reach the 80s again for the second half of the weekend.  The theme this weekend is warm high temperatures and a couple of chances of thunderstorms, but don't cancel any outdoor plans.  Not everyone will see the storms, and probably more areas stay dry than see rain this weekend.

By the middle part of next week temperatures should bounce up to the upper 80s or maybe even 90.

I was really hoping to blog about my storm chase with Sean Wilson back on June 11...but haven't had the chance yet.  It was exciting to say the least as we chased supercell thunderstorms that produced tornadoes and huge hail over central Kansas.  The same storms we experienced later went on to produce devastating tornadoes in Chapman and Manhattan.  Depending on our storm situation later today I may try to blog about the chase because it was memorable...and kind of scary at one point.

Mike,

Dew points should be in the low 60s.  Not too bad for this time of year.

Good Morning!  I know I haven't blogged in often, but I must say; my sump pump has been running overtime! (along with the mower and trimmer) In Edgerton, I don't think we received anything significant in the past 24 to 36 hours.  For today, I am not sure.  Will the rain in scattered nature hit the southwestern Johnson County area?

Andrew,

Your best chance of seeing a shower or storm will probably hold off until this evening and tonight.

Congrats! I go on vacation, and Jeremy gets to go on a storm chase. Did everybody get the bad news, though? Blown Away Tours isn't really there now, you can still go on a chase, but you will just have to pay for gas (which is fine w/me).

Slightly off the subject -- but when is the new web page being launched?  I thought there was talk about it this past wednesday.  Has it been delayed into next week?

Thanks,
Tim *************** Tim, I would look for it early next week. Our webmaster was out with a family emergency the day it was to launch. Jeremy

Summer may be here but I am anxiously awaiting fall.  Can we just fast forward the next few months?  LOL  Even though the temps haven't been too high the humidity has already been getting to me.  UGH ************* If it makes you feel better we are starting to lose daylight until the winter solstice! Jeremy,
I must compliment you on a really great blog. It still didn't have a hint of a heat wave in it which was the most important thing. I hope we get at least some thunderstorm activity tonight. wow it's been too long since I've heard thunder!

Jonathan,

Thanks for reading the blog.  There are already some storms around...one near Clinton right now.

I know it's way out of your area -- but my sister and husband are driving their eldest daughter down to Jackson, Miss to Ballet Magnificat for her to study there during the summer.  My mom (also in Kentucky) watched her weather and said it loko like it was going to be bad.  She's there by herself until tomorrow night and is really worried.  She's a worrier anyway!  I told her I'd check with "my" weatherman because he gives very accurate forecasts - I talk about the blog with her all the time - and see if you knew anything.  Do you have a guess as to the weather from KY to Miss?  It's a long shot I know, but . . .

It's really humid out today -- either that, or I'm less heat tolerant than I was last year!  Even my husband is slugging around out there trying to mow four acres and not really wanting to do it!  We're gonna burn later so I hope there is some rain!

Thanks, Laura

Laura,

Dew points are in the 50s right now...so it shouldn't feel very humid...just really warm.

I think KY to MS looks fine.  If there is a storm odds are better they'd miss it than run into it.  I wouldn't worry too much.

So, down here in drexel, do our storm chances looks to be greater, I got my golf game in today, and im hoping to go fishing this evening, but it sounds like we may get wet?

Chances are much better you stay dry this evening than see rain.  Your best chance comes after 10 p.m. I think.

Hi Jeremy,
I'm going to be out at the Royals game tonight.  I'm curious if I should take rain gear.  Looking up north in Nebraska right now there is a growing area of showers.  MCS maybe later?  Kind of hoping for rain, the garden and tomatoes needs a really good drink.
Thanks!
Renee

Renee,

I think the Royals game starts dry and then there is a chance something makes it in here before the end of the game.  More than likely you stay dry though.  Rain chance tonight is 40%.  Your call on the rain gear:)

There are some amazing clouds SE of Lee's Summit, MO. They are lined up in a line. I would hate to be under them, but from here they look very cool.

We went to the Royals Game last night and let me tell you the K.C. light Show was awesome!!  That new jumbotron thing is really cool.  The weather could not have been better for the event, warm but not hot, nearly calm winds. I also noticed some thunderstorms well north of the stadium and as the fireworks were going on I would catch glimpses of lightning coming from the thunderheads.  Everything was great... this is with the exception of the Royals not winning;)  The most unusual thing that we seen last night though, happened after the game and fireworks.  We were waiting in the parking lot for the rest of the crowd to filter out( no need to waste gas having the car slowly crawl out of the sports complex with all the other traffic) and I would say it was approaching midnight and to our east we seen a bright meteor streak down to our east( we were in lot "G") so it looked like it was above Arrowhead stadium.  This occurred long after all the fireworks had ceased and I have seen meteors in meteor showers before so I am sure that is what it was, but the only thing that made it really weird is that it was bright green.  Another thing that showed how bright it was, was the fact that the Full moon was rising from the eastern horizon as well.  I don't know if anyone else other than our group glimpsed it last night but it was unusual.

Nick,

Glad you had a great time.  Here's some info on what you likely saw...

Thanks for the link! It really was a cool sight, especially when combined with the thick haze of smoke that was still sitting over the sports complex and the orange full moon cutting through mid and high level clouds.  As for the storms in Neb. and Iowa, it will be interesting to see how they do once the sun goes down since the dew point in St. Joe the last time I checked is only 48 degrees!!

*********************

I think our dew points will go back up some once the daytime mixing concludes.  The dew points over NE/IA are only in the 40s and 50s.  Some moisture return aloft will help the storms.  I think some of these make it in...but a real organized area of storms may be tough to get.

Im back up in Spencer IA this weekend. The flooding around I-29 was much better.  A lot less sitting water in this area.  Up here in northern Iowa I didnt see one field that had water. (between Sioux City and Spencer)  The weather has been really comfortable all day and it looks like it is trying to start to form some thunderstorms.

Well my fingers are getting tired of typing on the iPhone.

Brian,

Spencer is home to one of the biggest county fairs in the country.  It always had big name music acts when I was growing up.  It was just over an hour from my hometown.  It also had a store called 'My 3 Sons' that people drove from all over to shop at.  Those are my Spencer memories:)
