Watch NBC Action News HD at 5, 6, & 10pm as we track thunderstorms across the region and have an update on the flooding northeast of the metro!
Good afternoon! The rain will just not let up over far northern Missouri. Some areas have now had over 10" of rain in the past 2 days. More is on the way this afternoon, tonight, and Friday. Today has been tricky to put it nicely. This morning's MCS pushed an outflow boundary thru Kansas City and much of the area. At least this has kept us cooler today with highs mainly topping out in the mid to upper 80s across the region. But often times outflow boundaries can be areas that storms fire up later in the day. Outflow boundaries are like mini-cold fronts. There are several across the region today and another one is going to be heading south this afternoon with the thunderstorms over northern Missouri. We'll have to watch this closely because the southern extext of this area is near St. Joseph. A few of these storms could reach the metro late this afternoon or this evening. The bulk of this area should stay to the north...but the rain area is currently moving southeast. The question is how far west/southwest does the back area of the thunderstorms build.
Here is the satellite showing the current thunderstorm complex and the outflow boundaries. One outflow boundary is associated with the narrow area of clouds close to Emporia. This is the one that moved through KC this morning. There is another one in north-central Kansas at this time.
If you live northeast of Kansas City where flooding has been occurring the past couple of days please continue to keep us updated in the blog or by email with rain totals, pictures, etc.
Look at the current surface map. The wind barbs are in about every direction you can imagine with the outflow boundaries and fronts across the region. Just look at Dodge City, KS which is 102 degrees! KCI is 76...while Topeka is 90! I think this map alone can describe how difficult the short term(6-12 hours) forecast is going to be.

With this many boudaries around nowcasting will be key for the rest of today and this evening. We'll keep everyone updated because there is a slight risk of severe weather for the rest of today and also on Friday. The greatest chance of more widespread thunderstorm activity is on Friday afternoon-Friday night.
