New Severe T-Storm Watch...Storms Near the Metro!

Watch NBC Action News HD at 10 p.m. as we track severe thunderstorms moving across the region using LIVE:ESP!

The Storm Prediction Center has replaced the watch that was in effect until 10 p.m. for Kansas City with another Severe Thunderstorm Watch that goes until 4 a.m.  Severe thunderstorms are rumbling near St. Joseph as I write.  Some backbuilding is occurring along the front and those storms need to be watched for people in Kansas City.  The severe reports coming in have been mainly large hail.  Including ping pong ball sized hail 1 mile north of Coffey, MO in Daviess County.  Also, quarter size hail in Mound City, MO in Holt County.  Hail and strong winds will be the main threat with the storms tonight along with heavy rain.  The storms have been moving at 35-40 mph so the potential for flooding rain seems much lower than previous nights.

Here is the latest watch box.

Stay tuned to NBC Action News for the latest severe weather information.  Arrival time of the storms in KC at this point would be around 10 p.m.

Jerri, welcome back, I've missed you, even though I rarely post.

My Border collie is wrapped around my legs as I type, the livestock guardian dogs (Great Pyrs) have climbed the fence and are now hiding in the lambing shed...hope the coyotes are afraid of thunder too :).  Its pretty much over now, just some lingering lightening but the rain has stopped, no hail.

PS I joined the CoCoRaHS and have the type of gauge they want. Just have to wait on help to get the post in so I can hang it. Will let you know when it is installed guys.

UpNorth, their dog is a goldie. Yesterday you had storms also, apparently, and my parents were down here in the city - she climbed the fence, they saw evidence of hair. The neighbor found her, put her in the house, where she destroyed all screen doors and windows - ripped them to shreds.  Coyotes - oh my, can you believe I heard coyotes hear in Olathe the other night? I'm by the pipeline. can't stand their yipping - that's the 2nd time they've run through there.

Jeri, sure looks like we won't get much, although the last few frames seem to show more building out to the west.

Jeremy - I'm not a stranger :) I just don't post! This is probably the absolute most ever!

Outside here off of I29 and Stark, I see some pretty vivid lightening out my sliding glass door in the back -- looks pretty intense!
Any chance the bulk of this might skirt by us, or are we in for direct hit?  What is this storm doing now?

Not to get off the weather subject, but we had a coyote in our front yard early one morning several months ago- also had a deer trot down the sidewalk going south on Oak.  We're not too far south of the plaza.  Makes you wonder where they're coming from!  The dog and I sat out watching the clouds this evening- now am just waiting on the storm to get here- if it does!

31 mph wind gust as the gust front came through.  Lots of lightning and now some heavy rain (1/4 inch as I type this) in Trimble, MO.  That's 5 miles north of Smithville.

Well that was one heavy storm!  The initial shelf cloud was cool as it was coming in with a slightly green looking sky behind the cloud.  Then the sky kind of brightened up slightly as the storm set in, but the rain slammed in with winds out of the north at about 40 m.p.h. at my house.  The lightning was frequent and vivid where you could "feel" the rumbling under your feet.  We also had some very small hail, interestingly we had some during the heaviest rain, and then as the rain let up we had another round of sparsely falling hail that was slightly bigger before the storm moved out.  Afterwards we were rewarded with the bright "orange" glow that is sometimes cast by the reflection of the setting sun off the high anvil clouds giving everything that almost "radioactive" orange look.  even as the storms roll away, the continually flickering lightning in the south and east sky is impressive.

I hope we don't get too strong winds or large hail down south.

Just my luck that the roofing company delivered the shingles and has them stacked on top of my roof along with rolls of tar paper. I sure don't want those items to blow off the roof and damage something else.... Like the metal chiminey flue. Thought by now all these severe storms would be dying down since we are almost into July and we could settle into a normal summer pattern. Long sigh....

After this round that is up North, I wonder if anymore storms will form? Guess I got to wait 10 more minutes to watch Jeremy so I can find out. Really need it to stay dry for baling hay. Another long sigh....

We haven't had normal for awhile. Ha! I'm just yearning for it. Last years late frost ruined the alflafa, and then because of the 16+ inches of rain in July we had hay baled in last week of July which made it stemy.

This years looks good, but the ground is so damp that I'm sure curing is going to be a bit of a challenge. Fuel prices are killing us though, so hay is going to be high even though it will be plentiful and some may get a second cutting of brome.

Traveler I can hear firecrackers off in the distance too. At first I thought it was thunder. Getting too many neighbors now. Sure makes the animals nervous. And I bet we will have a whole week or a bit longer since the 4th is on a 3 day weekend.

Maybe I will get missed with the heavy rain. I'll keep my fingers and toss crossed. Hee Hee

Impressive lightning and clouds.. in fact I almost peed my pants.. but a quick shot at the fort.  Just got another loud jolt of thunder, though.. kind of like an artillary shell but no rain.. more back-building, perhaps?
