Loud Friday Night In the Big Town!

Thunderstorms are blowing thru Kansas City between 10-11:30 p.m.  Expect heavy downpours, vivid lightning, gusty winds, and some hail.  There was a report of quarter size hail west of Lansing in Leavenworth County just after 10pm.  If you have rain totals or severe weather reports please pass them along!  The image below shows the thunderstorms which are right along the front.  Also, notice the green, thin line southwest of Topeka.  That is the front showing up on the radar.

As soon as the cold front and thunderstorms clear your backyard the threat of severe weather will be over tonight.  The Severe Thunderstorm Watch is quickly being cancelled behind the line of storms.  The weekend forecast looks great with much less humidity and highs in the low 80s.  Nighttime lows may even drop into the upper 50s Sunday or Monday morning.

After filling in this week I'm off both Saturday and Sunday.  Meteorologist Jeff Penner will be here on Saturday and Jeremy Goodwin will be here on Sunday.  They'll keep you updated all weekend long!  I'll see everyone again on Monday.

Just enough sprinkles to wet the ground here at 130th and State Avenue in KCK. According to the latest radar scan, looks like my area of WYCO is done for the night. Looking forward to the cooler temps none the less, and unfortunately back to watering.

Lots of rain and lightening here in Belton but it's not even very loud.  And bewild if you were seeing the tornado vortex signature on Wunderground...I've had to learn not to get too excited about that.  Often times it switches back and forth between that and the hail signature so quickly...even when it shows the tornado vorts I've rarely seen anything come of it.  Just in the short time I've been using Wunderground that is, I barely know what I'm talking about. G'night Becky.

FarmGirl Sorry, Sprites and Blue, Red Jets are a sort of after product of lightning and they shoot out the tops of thunderstorms and they look like an electrical "spray"  and they emit right out the top of a thunderstorm sometimes going as high as 40 miles into the atmosphere, I was wondering if maybe you could see some since you were under clear sky but could still see the storm in the distance.

Quite the lightening and thunder show 3 miles northwest of Leavenworth. No hail at all and maybe 5 minutes of gusting winds. Flashlight in hand I made the journey out to see how much rain all that excitement created and was disappointed to see only .05 in the gauge. Guess with summer here, I should be thankful for anything I get, and as a bonus it did cool it off enough to leave the A/C off and fling open the windows.

To all of you who think your dogs are afraid of the weather, please remember their ears are extremely sensitive, so it isn't as much fear as it is pain.

Have a great night

Sorry this is totally off topic but since it seems to be a recurrent theme tonight (and in my house as well), Benadryl is totally safe for dogs and works very well to calm their nerves during storms.  You can give 1 for every 10 lbs. of weight but I would not exceed 3...my male dog weighs 100 lbs. and we only give him 3 at a time.  Sorry again as I know that was not really weather related but wanted to share.

My buddy's house at 47th and Nieman got extremely heavy rain for about ten minutes with some close lightning and loud thunder...then it was over. This was around 10:45. As I write this, at 1:15AM, there is still lightning down to the south and southeast. Probably an isolated storm backbuilding.
This weekend is supposed to be beautiful. Highs around 80, lows around 60. Enjoy it because it looks like the summer pattern is building up within the next week to ten days.

Why did the rain finally get its act together south of here?  I watched the satellite from Omaha till it finally got right on top of us here and it never developed into a wide spread area of rain until it was past our viewing area.  Is that mysterious invisible cap starting to set in over us here??

***************************************************

Tizrah,

As it moved south it got later in the night, when the low level jet strengthens.  This is what fed & intensified those T-Storms.  We had bad timing again.

Good morning weather team!!!

Just checking in from SW Lawrence-did not get a drop here last night. One can really see the front on the radar this morning with that fairly good size complex out by Salina that is moving along it. (I think??) I am wondering if maybe SW Lawrence does not get clipped by that complex as it heads east south east. There is some rain just south of Manhattan that appears to be heading more east south east than just south east. Not really holding my breath as the front has for sure cleared this area but hoping to just get clipped and squeeze out a little rain.

Have a great day and as always, thanks for reading and providing so much great information on this Blog-just a great/fantastic place to follow/learn about weather!! Also, have a great Holiday everybody-we're off to Lone Star Lake (just for reference, Lone Star is about 10 miles SW of Lawrence-it was built in the 1930's as a WPA lake) for the next 2 weeks!!!! We ususally have one incident of fun weather out there (last 4th we had the flood and then a tornadao or a wall cloud on the 3rd) so I will report any interesting occurnces!!!

Bill Scott you sneezed I blinked and missed it in Lawrence
