June Rain Totals...July Begins!

Watch NBC Action News HD for Kansas City's most accurate forecast!

The weather records are about to close on another month so it is time to look back.  Overall June was average to well above average in precipitation and pretty close to average in regards to average monthly temperatures.  Here is a look at some impressive rain totals across the region from fellow bloggers.  I'll also add in a few of the automated weather stations.

  • Lenexa, KS  9.30-10.90"
  • Pleasant Hill, MO  10.85"
  • Kingsville, MO  9.85"
  • Overland Park, KS  7.50-8.60"
  • SW Grain Valley, MO  8.60"
  • Olathe, KS  7.93-8.52"
  • Sedalia, MO  7.40"
  • Independence, MO  7.00"
  • KCK 18th and State  6.60"
  • NW Lawrence, KS  6.11"
  • Central Jefferson County  5.12"
  • Trimble, MO  3.82"

Automated NWS stations

  • Lee's Summit, MO  8.02"
  • Chillicothe, MO  7.79"
  • St. Joseph, MO  6.54"
  • Downtown Kansas City  5.72"
  • KCI Airport  4.31"

Of all the rain totals I've seen for the month from the blog and NWS, KCI has been one of the lowest.  The official total at KCI will finish 0.13" below average.  The one thing I found surprising was the longest dry spell during June was 3 days!  That occurred over the weekend and today!

Temperatures were also very close to average at KCI with average monthly temperatures a hair above average.  June only produced one 90 degree day at KCI.  I'm sure many people noticed a little welcome relief in the electric and water bills this month!

Hopefully you had a chance to catch the 5 & 6pm shows today as I talked about the 4th of July forecast.  Right now the main focus this weekend will be a cold front moving in sometime late Wednesday/Wed. Night and then lingering around the region until early Friday.  Right now the best rain chance in KC is from Wednesday evening/night thru Thursday.  If clouds and showers are persistent on Thursday...highs would then need to be cut back into the 70s.  Right now we are going 80.  Here is a look at a 6 hour GFS forecast rainfall map.  This would be valid at 1 a.m. Thursday morning.  This gives a good idea of the thunderstorms that may develop along the cold front.

The front should push far enough south to let in some very comfortable and dry air for Friday p.m. into the weekend.  Great news if you have a favorite fireworks celebration or tradition that you will be enjoying with family and friends on the 4th!

havent kept a total jeremy, wish I had of now. but there is some pretty sad pictures in the weekly newspaper. It happened June 19th, and said a band of rain just dumped 8 inches in knob noster, and a lot less everywhere else. Do you recall that? ************* It really seemed like about every other or third day someone was getting heavy rain in June. I was working the morning shift that week so I think I remember talking about heavy rain that way. Jeremy

Ok, any rain needs to fall Wednesday for me to have a chance in the competition...and I'm not sure why I expected today's low to be so high.

Rdub, you may see some rain late tomorrow.

Alas, I do rather hope it waits until Thursday, however...

http://ruc.noaa.gov/disp2.cgi?/w3/rapb/plots_13km_dev/.//+sa4_precip+am+48

Its gonna be close to around the midnight - witching hour.

I had 30-60-40 for my pops...the NWS is going 20-50-40.  Pretty close!  I think I am going to be back on track now with my temps...alteast it will be closer and not so embarassing!

Just need tomorrow to be a bit more cloudy and a bit cooler.

I should have split the 1.1" rain total I predicted to something like 0.3-0.8 or so. O well. The way KCI has been going lately, 1.1" is probably too high a total to predict for any time period.

Jeremy,
Looks like from downtown I-70 northward rain fall totals were much less. I am north of 70 in kck at 68th and leavenworth rd. I finished with 5.30. was leavenworths totals in line with the lower totals? Maybe all of us up north will catch up with the south the latter half of summer.

Just north of I-70 the totals were less.  But northeast a couple of counties and you run into areas like Trenton, Brookfield, Chillicothe, etc. that had in the neighborhood of 7-12" of rain!

I need everything to slow down so the front comes through Thursday evening or Thursday overnight otherwise my forecast is going to take some hard hits Wed-Fri.

The NWS has the high on Thursday at 78F which is what I have for Friday.

Well, you know the old saying - "what a difference a day makes" (Grrrr!)

So, I'm guess that since the blog is so slow, Tomorrow evening and Thursday storms are going to be the regular ol' Thunderstorm variety without the "severe" component?

Twister -that day was nuts! that storm blew in out of no where and the rain was coming down in sheets. The lighting was insane as well. Knob Noster got hit hard as well as the base. One of our facilities took a direct hit from the lighting and knocked out all the servers. Another brand new facility was flooded.

Are you familiar with the Deerbrook apartments? They got hit the worst I think. It was like a roaring river through there. All the first floor apartments are ruined and cars that were parked in the parking lot were picked up and carried away.
I have some pictures but I cant figure out how to post them. Maybe I can email them to Gary and he can post them? Does anyone else know how to post pictures here?

Also, DD highway was closed from flooding as well. I didnt think that would happen!

Here in shawnee we had 7 to 8 inches, but unfortunately i'm afraid that I lost my notes with my exact total.  What i'm sure of is the last 1/2 of the month we had in total a 1/2 inch at the most.  Finally had to break down and water the yard this morning.  At least I made it until July 1.  I'd appreciate another good soaking from mother nature here in the next couple days so I could hold off another week + of having to water again.  Can ya hook us up Jeremy?

Thanks,
Tim

Here are the standings after Day 3 of the Independence Holiday Week Forecast Competition (remember, low score = more accurate forecast):

1.  Mike L.........21.00
2.  RDub...........24.00
3.  LSGolfer......27.50
4.  Notes..........31.50
5.  Lezak..........32.85
6.  Scott...........38.25
7.  BellGolf.......38.25
8.  RickMcKc....42.00
9.  GaryB.........59.50

The top three forecasters are currently beating consensus (very difficult to do over long periods of time).

The next few days are going to really shake up those standings.  Interestingly, 7 of the 9 forecasters forecast precip on Thursday (consensus amount = 0.27") and 8 of the 9 forecast precip on Friday (Independence Day) with Gary being the only dissenter (consensus amount = 0.39").

More discussion, including ideas for another forecasting competition, including a short-term one:
