T-Storms are forming at 6 PM..update

8 PM update:

I am on with an update live on NBC Action News at 8:08 PM.  This is a tremendous thunderstorm over the city right now with rainfall rates close to 2.5 inches per hour.  Flooding, frequent lightning, and some hail will continue.  The area will begin shifting southward.

Previous entry below:

Good evening,

I am on the air in just minutes.  So, this is a quick update.  While I was off the top of the show describing the developing thunderstorms, a new cell popped up near the Kansas Speedway.  We just looked outside (rule #1 of forecasting), and there it is, as we can see it from the Plaza.  The dewpoint temperatures are pooling right over the KC metro area, with 73 degree dewpoints at 6 PM.

There may be some severe weather in the form of quarter size hail, and there will likely be some very heavy rain.

Let us know what you experience.  We will be updating the blog later.

Gary

Gary-

NOAA radio went off with the TStorm warning at 1824, said large hail near Gladstone at 1840.  At 1838, we started getting steady pea to marble sized hail just off 169 near North Broadway, and then some hail between 3/4 inch and ONE inch started falling.  Last for about 4-5 mins, followed by very heavy rain, look like about 1/4 inch in just 5 mins.  Now at 1844, it's just drizzling.

As Garys (Lezak and England) say, "we'll keep ya informed...."

55th and pflumm, Shawnee: quarter to golfball sized hail and strong high-level rotation at 7:05PM. The storm has now moved off to the east. I don't know about upper-level conditions and the composition of the storm, but it sure looked pretty threatening. We didn't have a tornado warning, so I'm assuming there's no immediate tornado threat.
More storms out west dropping quarter-sized hail. We're probably not out of the woods yet.

What was I seeing?   Just the updraft where the hail was forming? I took a short video of it, but my mother and I both thought we were seeing something form that we really didn't want to see.

Jeri - *great* shot of the storm!!  Classic structure...isn't it beautiful?!?

What a wacky day for forecasting.  The overnight low was around 73 at KMCI, but then the morning convection moved in, dropped 0.29" and dropped the temp to 69 for the official low.

Then the persistent cloudcover kept temps around the airport in the upper-70s to low-80s all day right up until just the last couple of hours.

The official high at KMCI shot up to 87 at the last minute.

1954 hours - Just east of 169 along North Broadway and NW 71st Terrace....

Extremely windy and heavy rain...wind is pushing rain and small hail sideways, looks like a snowstorm.  Weather Underground Nexrad showed a "tornado vortex"  moving southeastwardly down I-29 towards Northmoor...but NOAA radio hasn't alerted since Severe TStorm Warning 20 mins ago.  I'd say wind has gusted over 60 to 70 mph easily, as an example, it moved my Sunbeam Grillmaster BBQ (has wheels on one end only, weighs about 50 pounds) a full SIX feet across the back deck in a southwestward direction - the wind was coming out of the Northeast.  NOAA just issued FFlood Warning at 1955, and we've had about 2 inches of rain so far according to gauge.

The trees are talking and the munchins are running around....

Outflow boundary just moved through...aprox 7 miles south of Pleasant Hill. No rain yet, temps dropped 8 degrees just like that (snapping my fingers). Timing's off tonight trying to photograph the lightning, too. 15 second exposures, and the lightning flashes either before I open the shutter or right after. Dang.

Not a single drop of rain here in drexel, still kids out shooting fireworks, a little rain wouldn't hurt, but I doubt we get any. Guess I will start to pack for las vegas.

As BoiseState said, we have 3.3 inches so far here in Shoal Creek. It's still coming down pretty hard.  We had hail that was slightly larger than a quarter around 6:45 tonight.

Jeffro, thanks. I live near SMNW off 67th and Bradshaw and have a van parked outside I'm trying to sell. I wonder if I'll just get it totaled instead...

In Oak Grove we took shelter in the basement briefly after we witnessed the wind pick up our 8 foot trampoline and toss it over a six-foot high fence in our back yard.
Fortunately it didn't hit the fence on the way out of the yard. The power went out for a half hour and just came back on. The rain was heavy for about 20 minutes, but we just have light rain now.

Gary and all-   As of 2200 hours......UPDATE from KC North

Just back in from helping our son with water getting into his basement and garage.
Rain Gauge on our back porch shows 4.3 inches of rain since about 1830, but I'm betting about 3 inches or more of of that total came between 2015 and 2130!  We're at north Broadway and NW 71st Terrace in Kansas City North (west edge of "Happy Rock" - Gladstone).

About that "Tornado Vortex Signature" I mentioned in an earlier blog entry -- it would be interesting to be able to go back on the tapes and see what happened to that cell ... it was coming right down I-29 from Barry Road towards the I635 Jct and Northmoor, the storm table on the radar site showed about a 46,000 ft top on it, with 100 percent chance of hail, 50 percent chance of severe hail.  I've watched many of these "signatures" on the nexrad drop down to the next lower levels of storms as they went on in duration, BUT THIS ONE SEEMED TO JUST FALL APART into a blotch of deep red, with no "storm cell" indicated on the nexrad.  This happened in all of maybe 10 mins between about 1945 and 1955.  Would this be an indication that the storm just "collapsed" and left nothing but heavy rain?  Very interesting sight for me.

Gotta go run the railroad now....hoping we don't lose our main tracks between Marceline and Mendon like we did last weekend for a couple of days!

Pat and Pat,
the transplanted Okies...
