Thunderstorms continue...details at 10 PM

Good evening everyone,

Wow!  Today has been a fascinating weather day.  Thunderstorms continue to sit over the downtown Kansas City area.  2 to 4 inches of rain have fallen around the middle of the KC metro area so far.  And, now at 9 PM, new thunderstorms are developing along the cold front.  This new development will likely spread south and affect the areas that have mostly missed this very heavy rain event thus far.  In the areas where the rain continues, significant flooding is possible during the next three hours.

We will have complete details on NBC Action News at 10 PM.  The thunderstorms continue to fire up along the cold front.  Flooding is continuing to become the major problem tonight.

I think it is so sad when someone comes on here and shares how they are feeling or tries to tell people what they have just experienced and someone has to take a stab at them.  shame on them for doing that, I hate storms like this and a lot of times I come on here to read what everyone else is encountering and how they are feeling, so what if there are those of us that dont like storms or they make us scared, is this blog not for us to share what is happening and to possibly find out what is in store for us when storms are moving in?  sad that just because one person doenst feel the same they have to poke fun.....just my opinion

but for the weather up but 152 and 29 north of the river, its been raining like crazy and had quite the light show, calmed down considerable now....looks like there to more to come...stay tuned

oh and for those out there on the roads and traveling...be careful out there!! it CAN be and IS dangerous!!

See, this is what's wrong with this blog now.  I said that NOT EVERYONE is having flooding, in fact, near Liberty I've measured just under one inch, including this morning's rain.  I did not say Lilly didn't have problems.  She said, and I quote, "Roads are flooded everywhere".  Simply fact, IT"S NOT flooded everywhere and to raise everyone to a panic mode by saying so is no different than wishing for a tornado.  So, for those of you who don't have reading comprehension, and maybe you don't know who you are, get a book and learn to read before jumping on people who state facts instead of silliness.  Have a nice day.

Lillyanya said:

Thanks.  As for you Zazel, I would much rather warn people then say oh hey.. It's great fun out there.  Let's all go out and drive around.

Did you know flash flooding is the number one weather related thing that kills people!

It's better to know then not to know...

In the previous blog I listed the places where it was flooded.  A new blog was posted, I'm sorry I didn't feel like typing that all out again.

There's plenty more I would love to say to people like you, but they frown on that here, so I'll just shut up for now.

Thanks to everyone who stood up for what I was saying. :)

You do realize that as we speak there are streets completely flooded in the downtown, KCK area?

Do you realize Gladstone to Liberty on 35 does not have the same amount of rain (2.5 inches max) that KCK, MO river basin to downtown (5.0 inches max) has right now?

I drove through Liberty and Gladstone on 35 back down to dry Olathe this evening around 7:00.  Downtown and N. I-35 coming out of loop south was horrible.

Oh and Zazel, did I mention I was coming back from Cedar Rapids, IA where I was today on business?

You want to diminish flooding concerns?   Why not drag your ass up to Cedar Rapids and view their downtown area?  Better yet, go ask the University of Iowa in Coralville how they are going to be able to reopen the biggest dormitory on campus that was flooded to the point that they are determining if it is still structurally sound.

Dramatic?  Maybe for this rain event....but don't diminish other's experience because yours was fine...

Oh, and one last quiz for you mensa....What weather event kills more people every year?

You got it sparky!!

If a TVS has been observed and reported as a part of the ATIS/ASOS or has been forecasted in the TAF, then your sirens have probably been going off for at least 5 minutes already...hehe.  That's the real deal.

Or driving in downtown Des Moines and seeing sandbags still sitting against buildings 5 blocks from the Des Moines river.....

Guys/Gals,

A TVS 'is-'the' tornado/funnel whether radar indicated or visually observed.  It's not an icon overlaid on the radar, or on the 'wundergrund' page.

Just switching radar modes from the radial velocities back to the composite ref doesn't make any of us amatures qualified to tell anyone that we've seen a TVS on our desktop radars.

Facts:

Lilly says, "DO NOT GO OUT! IT IS NOT SAFE.    Roads are flooded everywhere.  I had to turn around a TON of times because the water was well over the curbs.  Be very careful and only go out if you HAVE to!"

Zazel says, "Relax Lilly, it all depends on where you are.  This isn't the end of the world.  I just drove home from Gladstone to the Liberty area.  Not once did I encounter any high water on any road.   I don't doubt there are areas that are flooded, but to act like it's the end of the world is ridiculous."

Lilly claims, in all capital letters, don't go outside because it's not safe.  Zazel points out he just drove home through the northland and didn't encounter one flooded area, thus proving it is not flooded "everywhere", although admits it is likely flooded somewhere.  I also tell Lilly not to act like it's the end of the world, which it isn't.  In no way did I insult Lilly, I simply rebutted her statement.

What happens next is a bunch of halfwits jump up to insult me, in the name of protecting Lilly, even though I didn't attack her, but instead I simply elucidated that her point wasn't true for all, or even most of the metro.  I then counterattack and insult those who chose to insult me, not counting Lilly (although she later chose to), instead of trying to refute my absolutely correct statement that the entire metro area isn't flooded.

My counterattack results in a new volley of insults from those who lack the ability to argue a point instead of attacking the person, a person who didn't deserve to be attacked in the first place.  Not once did I call Lilly anything, other than point out she over hyped the story.  At any rate, it's below me to try and explain logic and debating to people who can't speak above inane drivel.  I'm going to bed, where I can dream of world that isn't filled with idiots.

You typed that out knowing full well what you were doing.  I have a right to feel insulted.  Your little stretch of highway doesn't really count for much considering just how much of the metro truly is having flash flooding problems.

You came on here to start something.  Plain and simple.  Not our fault you don't like the ramifications of that.

Another big round of storms, first this mornings activity, then the evening stuff, here in St. Joe we got some very heavy rain gusty winds, and VERY INTENSE lightning from the storms that rolled through up here... and the city sounded the tornado sirens because law enforcement thought they saw something, my guess is that they saw an unusual lowering appendage from the shelf cloud and thought it was tornadic.  After the storm we also had the most vivid spider vain lightning I have seen so far this year, very impressive.

It's all good Lilly, even us as amatures still have to be able to somehow interpret what's being told to us.  That's what we have Gary and crew for.:-)

Sometimes we all forget that we see things through SWIFT WX or Threat Net and then look at the radar afterwords and try to justify sort of what we've just seen.

The hard part is seeing it and having to be the one to tell everyone what it is without the benefit of having an NWS warn overlaid across the top of it.

That's what Gary and crew do.  Years of schooling to be able to do that and make the right call well in advance.

Anywho, it's all good!  Hope everyone had a good night of tracking.  I wish my cable was back on!!

Hi Gary,  wow what a night here in Farley MO.  This morning woke up to rain and hail, with an inch of rain total.  Tonight out did that, with 4.6 inches of rain.  Our yards are flooded, gardens are flooded and hopefully won't have to be replanted.  When it rains it rains.  Satelite has been in and out all night, it's still out so I missed the 10 o'clock forecast.  Oh will, I have you on here which is a good thing.  Anyways, I hope you have a good night, and stay safe driving home, and walking those precious dogs of yours.

Hope the flooding isn't too bad for those NW of me. South of Pleasant Hill we have had less than .25". Gary it's amazing (fascinating?) that this storm has tracked exactly like the last few have...mostly to the north and west, and then we get rain on the tail end of the strong/severe stuff.

Nice light show, finally got a few good pics. Out of 150 attempts, got 8.  You can see them at http://picasaweb.google.com/bmackkc/Lightning2July2008

Can anyone tell me how strong the winds were tonight?  Sometime around 8 is when the lights started flickering, I could here the buzz of the high power lines, had to be a tree limb somewhere close down the street (never saw it).  Been a looooooooong night!

Had almost 2 inches of rain in the gauge earlier, and it just started pouring again.

"Just kinda fun to see someone come out with an agenda to minimize someone else on this blog and then slowly have to crawl into their hole as they realize they are wrong."

Hmmm ... is that now the purpose of this blog?

I'm out of town this week and heard about the bad weather, so I came to the blog to get the scoop. I read this whole thing from top to bottom, and I sure didn't get the impression that Zazel came here with an agenda to minimize anyone or start something. Saying that Lillyana was "end of the world ridiculous" was over the line, but truth is, if you did not read her comments from the previous blog and understand what she had gone through, you might have thought she was a little over the top.

I know I did - at first - because I didn't read the previous blog (is that now a requirement?), her post was first in line on this one and it was IN CAPS. Until she explained later, you would not know that she wasn't "yelling" and demanding. (Just to be clear, I'm happy you made it home safe, Lilly, and I understand your concern. My wife and I live near I-29 & 64th and she got caught in the flooding, too).

I know that there are a lot of you who post very regularly and especially in storms. I truly enjoy reading (most of) what you write but, honestly, sometimes things feel a little cliquish. Hammering someone (who has a reasonable point) so that they will crawl into a hole - and then being applauded for it - only adds to that perception.

Peace
