July 8th thunderstorms

Good afternoon bloggers,

It is like a monsoon disturbance, that is usually over the southwest part of the nation at this time of the year, combining with the weak cold front, and boom!  Thunderstorms are developing all over the place.  There will be a very minimal threat of any severe thunderstorms, but some potential for flooding.  We will keep track of it for you as we go through the afternoon.  It is going to be a stormy next few hours with some very heavy rain and booming thunder.  Just try to stay indoors.

Look for an update later this afternoon, but with all of the construction going on, we will be distracted as our old set continues to be torn down.

Have a great afternoon.  Most lawns are about to get a drink.

Gary

I know you're tired of hearing the questions about "how much" and "when" - but since I haven't asked yet today, I get to ask just this once!  Gary (or anyone else) -- do you have an educated guess as to where the 4-5+ is gonna be?  I live in Kingsville.  Thanks.  Laura

Oh yea- we do need some rain but, like you said earlier, I'd prefer that my lawn just get a medium drink - not drunk! :)

Gary - can you describe further what you mean by monsoon distrurbance?  Trying to learn here...

I see a vort riding the lower end of the trough axis.  How is this different from normal?

Is it the idea of the vort rounding the ridge boundary in the SW?  Perhaps without the 500mb vort, not much would happen?

-------------------

Scott,

Usually at this time of the year there is an upper ridge over the southwestern U.S.  And, disturbances rotate around it tapping tropical low level moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf of California.  It is the summer monsoon season over the southwest.  We have one of these disturbances rotating around the ridge, that is over Louisiana, instead of the southwest.  This, disturbance, with its own tropical moisture, combined with the weak front are creating this unusual July day.

Im wondering if those of us along and north of I-70 will even see more then the few sprinkles we got here in far western Wyandotte County. Looks like parts of eastern Johnson and Jackson county got punded with some heavy rainfall. 2 inches in the less then 1 hour! Well hopefully it rains, would be great not to have to water tonight!

As a bonus for being at my job over 10 years (besides the monetary one) I got to choose a gift from a catalog. I chose a weather gauge. It came yesterday and I can't figure it out. It says it is sunny (not quite) and only picks up one of the sensors. At least it was free.
