Our next chance of thunderstorms

Good morning NBC Action Weather bloggers,

You can continue to watch the construction of the NBC Action News set and Forecast Center by clicking on the following link:

http://www.nbcactionnews.com/studio

They have successfully taken apart our old set, and moved it out of the studio.  The next step is putting in a brand new tile floor.  This process should begin today.  This entire process will take another 3 to 4 weeks.  Right now, it feels good in there as it is like one big empty room.  But, this is about to change.

Our next chance of thunderstorms is showing up for early Friday.  A weak disturbance will track across Kansas tonight and into western Missouri on Friday.  You can see an upper level disturbance by looking at various levels of the upper atmosphere.  Look at the 500 mb forecast valid at 7 AM Friday below:

This map, above, is the 500 mb forecast valid tomorrow morning.  There are many features that are obvious, and others not so obvious that I will point out:

  • Hurricane Bertha, a weak category 2 hurricane, is shown with the X well off the east coast.
  • There is a rather strong upper level storm tracking across the United States/Canada border in Montana on Friday morning.
  • The main jet stream is also waving across the northern US/Canada border.
  • An upper level disturbance (black dotted line) is moving through Kansas early Friday morning.
  • The Anticyclone is weak and off the New Orleans coast, another weak one is off the southwest coast

The storm, moving across northern Montana, will drag a weakening cold front across our local area on Saturday morning.  As long as these cold fronts keep coming, summertime heat will be kept under control.  The models are suggesting that this front will move through dry on Saturday morning.  There is a disturbance (the black dashed line) forecast to move through us early on Friday.  This may be strong enough to form high based thunderstorms during the morning on Friday.  I am expecting to see some picturesque cumulonimbus clouds during the first half of Friday.  And, the anticyclone is weak and just off the Louisiana coast.  There is still no sign of this building and strengthening, so no heat waves are in our near future.

Have a great Thursday!  Check into our construction camera from time to time.  There has been a request that we move the camera during one of our weathercasts so you can see us as we present the weathercast at the green wall.  I will try to get this done today at 5 or 6  PM tonight.

Gary

so today would remind you of Strawberry Swing from the new Coldplay album... "Perfect Day" outside!

I'm fine with the summer heat staying away for a bit, keep the a/c bill low!

I was listening to that song on my way to workout.  And, now I am wiped out, not so much of a perfect feeling.

I would think it would feel weird to know that people are always watching your every move....kinda like Big Brother, creeppppyyy!!! Of course I know that the camera does not follow you everywhere but still kinda creepy. Maybe since you are working you are really not noticiing it all though cause you are busy. Sure has been a nice summer, so far. Well have a good day...gotta get my girls to swim lessons.

Monica,

The camera is noticable at first...then you don't even know it's there.  The construction guys got a kick out of it though.  They had to tell a few of their friends about it...but not their boss:)

Team,
I noticed there seems to be a N easterly movement of the storms in Northern Oklahoma this morning. Are these these storms that present us with our chance of rain this afternoon? Where will the Friday night storms be coming from if the do appear?
I'm driving my mom back to Mexico, MO tomorrow night after a weeklong visit with us.  On my way to KC bringing her up last Wednesday (a week ago) I drove through that horrendous downpour on I-70 and it never seemed to end. It was the most grueling drive in a rain storm I have ever experienced. I had to pull over for a good twenty minutes and when I finally started moving again it was still raining so hard, I found myself driving up the exit ramp still thinking I was on the  highway.
Trying to figure out what to expect Friday night.  seems some of these storms are tracking I-70 this month.

----------------

There is a weak upper level disturbance in the tropical flow this morning.  It may trigger an isolated thunderstorm this afternoon.

Have a safe ride.

Morning, Jeremy...

Pretty boring weekend coming up for you..should be able to get in some other work.  The only thing bearable about Summer weatherwise is watching the patterns for the end/beginning of another cycle.

Short of that, Summer is quite boring.  I could not imagine what it would be like to forecast on the west coast.  I would die of boredom.

--------------

Scott,

I grew up in Los Angeles. When you don't know any better, the weather out there is very exciting.  But, then I moved to Oklahoma to go to college, and I learned that the weather is actually more exciting elsewhere.

Is 100 degrees in the foreseeable future?  I sure hope not.  I hate the heatwaves!  Husker Dad in Omaha told me that he has not had to water his yard yet this year due to all of the rain they have been getting.  I wish we could be as fortunate.

Scott, I grew up in the deep south, where summer forecasting is even more boring, and lasts longer. Forecast is the same every day, "Hot and humid, 20% chance of thunderstorms. High near 90, low near 75. The next cold front is expected sometime in late September"

*******************

At least the cold fronts have been making it to KC this summer.  Giving us some breaks from the humidity from time to time.  Also has kept rain totals at or above average in most spots.

That' what I like about summers farther north--it's possible to get a front through and have a temporary break. That doesn't happen in the deep south.

Gary,

As it is slow today, I went back to the 500 mb maps in August.  Compared to the cycle in October.

What I did this time was image by image for a week's span, I drew in the trough and ridge axes.  I overlayed one on top of the other with the associated markings and went through the whole week.

I hope to figure out a clean way to show this, but it is clear that the same pattern existed in August.

I figure it is something like this that you will need to see.  Right?

By watching the studio cam, who would have thought you all worked in a cave?  Is there a budget for some lighting?

******************

The house lights are on right now...that's all that is needed.  No need for the bright energy using tv lights right now.  It feels like a cave in here though...very cold!

Is anyone else having trouble viewing the studio cam?  When I click on play the screen appears for a few seconds, saying it's loading, then the whole thing disappears.  Can't get the screen to stay "on" long enough to let the cam load.  I was having this problem yesterday then for some strange reason it worked one time.  Dea

******************

Is the issue on your end?  I just viewed the streaming video on our site and everything looks good.  The delay is only about 3-4 seconds from what is going on in the studio and what you see on the video.

Since the blog is kind of slow today, I thought I would throw this out there. A new lava flow opened up on the Kilauea Volcano, HI. The flow is now threatening the last 5 houses standing in the area.

Ohh yea, there is a Tornado Warning just southeast of Minneapolis, MN.

Jeremy, yeah I was thinking maybe it's my computer- I have a mac.  Don't know if I need something special to view it although yesterday I just went to the cam and clicked play and it worked- one time.  The rest the time it would just go back off.  Strange!  Dea

Wow Brocksmama, it seems like the studio cam dosent like you. I did have your problem for a few minutes then it worked. Now it seems like it isn't streaming but a person will move, stop, then move again after about like 6 or 10 seconds.

OK now the cam IS working for me...  Maybe I just have to "whine" each time I want to view it...  Who knows!!!  I am liking all the cloud cover today- seems to be keeping the heat down a little- at least it doesn't feel as bad as when the sun is out full force!  Dea

As long as nothing seems to be urgent today . . . do any of y'all ever feed and watch hummingbirds?  For some reason this year we just don't have nearly as many.  Last year, we had several that were SO tame that they would sit on theselittle posts on our porch while we were out -- plus they'd stay on the feeders and feed even if we were sitting there. They all seem pretty scarce this year. Just wondered if anyone else was having that problem - maybe it's from an odd weather pattern!  (Or from the beagle that was a stray that now lives with us . . . )  I just miss them!  We sure have the goldfinches, woodpeckers and an occasional indigo bunting though!  Laura.

I havnt seen many Hummers this year at all either. my neighbor used to have 30+ birds on her feeders almost everyday, but every time I look out, there is only 1-5, and sometimes there is nothing almost all day.

I dont know what is, but maybe it is all of these cold fronts pushing through...idk.

HummerSeeker, I was just in Atlanta visiting the in-laws, and they don't seem to have any hummers either. She said a few earlier, then none now. She seems to think it was heavy spraying for Japanese beetles, maybe took away their food supply. She has seen them at other houses in the neighborhood.

Wxteam, I like so much better the new change. I didn't like having the big picture change by just hovering over the thumbnails. Clicking on the thumbnails in order to see it in the big picture is much better.

I haven't been able to get the livecam to play anything at all, it just stays black. The sped-up video of the tear-down works, though.
