NBC buys the Weather Channel & morning showers

Good early morning bloggers,

NBC is buying The Weather Channel:  Story below!

When I awakened this morning, thunderstorms were active with a lot of lightning right near downtown Kansas City (picture of our American Century Investments Skyview at 5:30 AM above, and a rainbow caused by a rainshaft over eastern Douglas county at 6:40 AM).  Somehow they formed right over the city, and then moved off to the northeast with torrential rainfall.  There is another band of showers and thunderstorms moving up from the southwest, but these are trying to track along and north of I-35 and the Missouri River.  We will be tracking this all morning on NBC Action News.

NBC is buying The Weather Channel:

NBC Universal and two partners said Sunday they have reached a deal to buy The Weather Channel from Landmark Communications Inc., ending a drawn-out process that had attracted interest from several major media companies.  Financial terms weren't disclosed, but a person familiar with the matter, who insisted on anonymity, said the purchase price was $3.5 billion in cash.  NBC was joined in the deal by private equity firms The Blackstone Group LP and Bain Capital LLC.

NBC already operates a digital weather and news service called NBC Weather Plus that was launched in 2004 and would make a logical fit with The Weather Channel. NBC Weather Plus is owned by NBC and its affiliated TV stations and can be seen on digital cable services and digital subchannels operated by NBC stations.

NBC and Landmark said in a statement that The Weather Channel would be operated as a separate entity out of its base in Atlanta. They said they expected the transaction to close by year-end, pending regulatory approvals.

What does this mean for NBC Action Weather Plus?  We will have to wait and see, but this is good news for NBC and NBC Action News.  Have a great start to your day.

Gary

Still raining here north of Lawson, 3/4" of rain total thus far this morning.   LOTS of lightning!  Great for the garden and trees we just planted...not so great for the ones who just came yesterday and cut our hay field...ugh!

There are 130 girls softball teams playing a mid-west "World Series" tournament today and this weekend at Tiffany Springs.  How soon do you think this weather will be our of the area?

Have a great weekend!

Well Gray and Jeff I totally agree with what the LRC was telling you last night.  Here on the South side of Liberty we ended up with .4" of rain and wind gusts strong enough to bend over my new flag pole at the ground!  This is the 3rd one this year!  The first two actually broke in a section of the pole.  These are supposed to survive 80 mph winds.  Guess it's safe to say the storm was "intensifying" as it came through my area.  Hopefully this next round is nicer to us.

Also too wanted you to know I like the tweaking to the weather page.  Guess this gives all of you something to pass the time while the noisy reconstruction continues.  Great Job!

As Watkins Gal mentioned, Liberty also has the U13 baseball world series that starts this weekend and goes all next week.  Ther are 54 teams coming to Fountain Bluff from 15 states.  Hopefully the weather cooperates to show some Kansas City hospitality to all these visitors at Fountain Bluff and Tiffany Springs!

Wow,  could it possibly mean that I do not have to drive in listening to KMBZ with your accurate forecast then drive home listening to some ridiculous forecast that makes no sense from the weather channel?

Well adding The Weather Channel gives NBC yet another station to show their 2,900 hours of live Olympic coverage, which is no exaggeration.  I won't be surprised to be watching fencing or badminton on the Weather Plus station in a month.  I love watching the Olympics, but I think they're going crazy with this coverage.  Anyway, that is totally off the topic.

After all your comments about how inaccurate The Weather Channel is, and all the comments telling people to watch you and not TWC, I find it amusing how your tune has suddenly changed.  Of course, in today's world I realize profit and protecting a company's image is far more important than the truth...

First off, it would be stupid to have Olympic coverage on a weather station. They might show what the weather is in Beijing but that statement is crazy. Zazel, TWC is not fully accurate but once it's taken over by NBC don't you think they will improve the forecasts. If I think your company is yukky and I buy it anyway because it makes me a profit, wouldn't I run my new company the way I run my current one and make it better to make my profits even better? That was just amean comment. There's been lots of off the wall comments here lately, complaining about every little thing with the weather page. And about the live feed cam because the lights are off. Or vbecause no one is moving. Do you expect them to put on a puppet show and use up all their lights just to make people happy? Come on!

whirly calm down.  no one has been going crazy about the weather page. they have made observations.  no one is expecting them to do "a puppet show"  you complain about the comments that others make....sometimes you seem a little harsh yourself.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the Olympic coverage was placed on TWC.  The networks share programming like that all the time.  I would be more worried that the network tries to "shared service" the local programming with TWC.  The last thing I want is to have someone in Atlanta trying to determine if it was going to rain north or south of the river or not knowing how to pronounce Osawatomie.

It would be nice though, if we could get Gary's fantastic forecast on the eights instead of the misinformation we currently get.

How about a puppet show?  Now that would be entertainment!

Thanks homemom!  Good luck to your team also!  We are suppose to play this evening at 5:00 and 8:00...wouldn't be surprised if the games got moved back because of the rain.  We were suppose to play a state tournament last year in Columbia, but it got rained out...hope this is not a repeat!

I read about the Weather Channel on your site. To me, it almost didn't make any sense. To a lot of people around the nation, TWC is found annoying and very inaccurate sometimes. Jay Leno even mentioned it on his show last season. Gary is right, we will have to wait and see what this means for WX+. Personally, I wouldn't think that it should do much. But if it did, I would think that they might add some of the things from TWC to WX+.
One thing I don't understand though that was mentioned in the blog. How is this good news for NBC and NBC Action News? I must agree with zazel when he says how inaccurate the Weather Channel is at times. Perhaps Weather Plus can talk some sense into TWC and make them about 1000% more accurate now that they have been bought. Who knows. But I really would like to know how this is good news for NBC and KSHB. Just my thoughts. It probably dosen't and won't make any sense.

Alden, maybe TWC will start carrying the NBC logo which will make people start to watch the local NBC stations for their weather and also become aware of Weather Plus. There are actually people out there who do not know how great it is!

We continue to try and recruit viewers to show them that there is a forecast that they can trust!

I agree with you Jeri. NBC has been trying now for years to get viewers to watch them so they can once again be #1 in terms of people watching them. If this was to happen, KSHB could possibly become the leading 10 o clock news station. If that dosen't happen, at least have more people watching them at 10.

I hope they keep the two separate. If they dumb down Weather Plus to make it like TWC, it will be a shame. Weather Plus, for example, has a really good tropical update segment. It puts the 20 seconds of Dr Lyons on TWC to shame.

Hi everyone!  Since it doesn't seem to be to active today - I'll tell you this about the hummingbirds (Braysmama and everyone else) - seems like some of you said you hadn't seen many this year either. I wrote the Wildlife Conservation people - wondered if maybe there WAS something to do wtih the weather, or if they all got killed on the way or something.  Here's their response:

Hi Laura, On a year to year basis, we receive calls from people wondering where their hummers are and/or they have tons of them this year compared to previous year/s . . every year is different. State wide there isn't a problem with the hummringbirds, they are changing feeding stations, either changing or staying in nesting areas, weather patterns are different, For the most part, the adults come back to the same stations but the baby birds are forced out and away having to find their own territory, they have shown up in dfferent counties and/or even a different states. So once they start migration back south, August/September, it's possible you will be in the path once again and enjoy lots of hummers at your station again.  If you have any other questions, please let me know. Thanks for your question and have a happy and safe weekend.

Gary,

I hope the acquisition of TWC will be a benefit to both sides.  I do recall you mentioning your opinion before of TWC.  But aside from that, hopefully TWC will learn from NBC, which would benefit them and their current viewers.  As for me I've always tuned into NBC no matter what viewing area I'm in around the country.

As for the weather...skies are certainly clearing up here in Olathe.

Laura (HummerSeeker),
I've often wondered about their migrating patterns, too.  Until 3 years ago I've NEVER seen one until I had a hibiscus on my deck and one or two would just show up at the same time.  Talk about the neatest sight!  That was when I lived in NJ.  Since I've moved here I only saw one last summer.  But yesterday I was visiting the Overland Park Botanical Gardens and I was told one was hovering nearby, of course I missed it.

I remember when the Weather Channel would do a segment featuring local meteorologists on local tv stations explaining their weather situation. I remember KAKE-tv being on there one time out of Wichita but can not recall any other stations around the region. I'm hoping maybe that gets more use now and with NBC affilliates and Gary can be used on there maybe and explain the LRC some.. Who knows!!

Hopefully NBC can liven things up over at TWC, and make things better over there... TWC's REALLY gone downhill over the past five years.  Hopefully stuff won't be so hyped, either.  :\
