NBC Action Weather Blog

Friday night forecast and contest

Good evening everyone,

Will there be any thunderstorms tonight or Saturday?  I will have complete details at 10 PM on NBC Action News.  And, I will update this blog entry as we analyze the evening data on thunderstorm potential.

We will have a contest just for the bloggers beginning Sunday.  You will have until Tuesday to enter. Our weather team will let you know what you have to do to enter the contest on Sunday and Monday.  We will have a prize for the winner.  So, check in Sunday for the details.  It will be a fun summer contest, similar to last years, but different!

Update at 9:30 PM:

The NAM and NGM have come out with an upper level disturbance tracking just south of Kansas City during the day on Saturday.  There is abundant moisture, a wind shift line/weak cold front moving slowly through, and some mid-level moisture.  This would almost always mean heavy thunderstorms at this time of the year.  We are going to up the probability to 60% on Saturday.  It will be an interesting morning and Jeremy Nelson will be tracking it for you beginning during the weekend Today show cut-ins, and then during our 8 AM weekend morning newscast on NBC Action News.

Its friday night in the big town (sorry to steal your line gary!).  My lawn could use another drink here in Shawnee, only had about .7" from the system earlier this week.

Looking forward to the contest!  I'm guessing it has something to do with hottest day/time but I wonder what the twist is?

Based on the GFS, the only real chance we have of some nice rainfall would be next Saturday and Sunday.  Otherwise, it is showing rather dry conditions for our area.

-----------------

Tomorrow could be interesting for our area.  The latest NAM has it very close to being a wet day on Saturday.  Something is a bit off, as there is a little capping, but I am shocked that this isn't a wet set-up right now.

Teaser blog.  Blah.

Hottest temp will be earlier this year...that is the only hint.

-------------------

Blah, I hate to bore you Scott!  Anyway, look at the NAM for Saturday.   There is a vort max, abundant moisture, a front, and there should be thunderstorms.  Something is just a bit off.  It could be in the 70s during the day with some rain?

How much rain are you thinking?  The NWS is saying less than a tenth of an inch.

Gary,

I am looking at the NAM for Saturday.  What am I missing?  I just don't see much rain...

---------------

Jacob,

That's my point, the models just aren't cranking any rain out.  I hate it when they do this, and they may be right.  It is going to be close.  There should be a few thunderstorms around on Saturday.

By the way, we just moved the camera back into the studio.  The new set will begin construction sometime next week.

How do you see what you all are doing in the "weather center"?  It's almost all dark...

The NAM has slowed the front down about 6 hrs.   i think the new GFS may as well.

I would go for 80 with 50% rain because of the slower progression potential.

The vort and the cloud cover should play a piece in this.  The 750 is soupy.

Only question is..lately the rogue vorts have started sliding SW of the metro...does it happen again?

Still should get the temps about right though...

jacob, that is a great source..but there are others...[btw..your link is for earlier today's 06Z.  You need to go with the most recent 00z]

Don't forget the RUC, SREF, and the GFS MOS.  In addition, there are other composite models that are helpful.

Some of the sites I use are on my blog page.

Being such short range, sat/wv/obs are most telling for timing and model initiation placement issues.

Yes, the words stopped flowing......Oh well.  I still feel the weathercast covered what I wanted it to cover.  Now is it going to rain or now?  :)

Oh yeah, I'm battening down the hatches and bringing in the outdoor furniture in anticipation of the two distant rumbles of thunder and the .04 of an inch of rain I'll see tonight and/or tomorrow.  Pretty exciting stuff!

Rain Misses to our NW

it was a good guess last night when this happened.

Tomorrow it will weaken and will just poof up spotty showers for most of metro

Tomorrow night the southeast end will get the rain while the metro is left high and dry.
