Weather Blog Contest

Good morning bloggers,

Here are the details on our latest weather blog contest.  Please read the rules and contest details carefully.  Entries are due by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15.  If you answer the question below correctly you will win a prize.  In the event that more than one person has the correct answer we will use the tie breaker question to determine a winner.  We will announce what the prize is this week...so keep checking back.  And, if there is still a tie we will have a drawing from all of the winners.

How many 90 degree or higher days will we have between July 16th and August 31st at KCI?  There are 47 days between these dates.  And, we will have a tie breaker by guessing the hottest temperature of the summer.

One entry per blogger:

How many 90 degree days between July 16th and August 31st?   ___________

What will the hottest temperature be this summer?___________

So far in 2008, we have had only 3 days 90 degrees or higher at KCI, and 5 downtown.  Last year we had 7 90 degree days by July 15th at KCI and 12 downtown.

After July 15th we had 30 90 degree days at KCI and 32 downtown, including the first 23 days of August.  So, what will happen this year?

Please post your guesses in the comments section of the blog and we will keep track of everyone's answers!  Good luck!

A warming trend is in the forecast.  Our next cold front is not showing up, for the first time this year.  One could sneak in here over the weekend, but it just isn't a sure thing which will likely lead to our hottest stretch so far this year.

My guess came from watching how many june bugs hit the outdoor light in a 15 minute period last night.  Clearly they are keenly aware of the Great Lakes ULL in this pattern and subsequent associated long term longwave and the dominant NW flow that should come back in August.

I did notice at one point they alligned in a pattern of "SS", but I dismissed it as a climate norm.

Nature as all the answers, just have to observe.  LOL.

A note on the tropics:  Overall, the NHC did remarkably well predicting the track of Bertha.  Last Monday I made the comment that I'd be really surprised if Bertha made a direct hit on Bermuda on Saturday, as the forecast track last Monday had Bermuda in the middle of the forecast track's "cone of uncertainty" on Saturday.  From today's NHC advisories, it appears the center of Bertha passed less than 40 miles to the E of Bermuda today.  Bermuda so far reported a top wind gust to 48 mph from Bertha, although the latest update from the NHC says that there is still a chance for higher winds there before the storm moves away.  The government of Bermuda has therefore issued a hurricane watch for the island, as current reconnaissance indicates top sustained winds are now just shy of hurricane strength at 70 mph in a rain band that is headed for Bermuda: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCUAT2+shtml/141855.shtml.  Looking at the next potential tropical problem, let's hope the tropical 1008 mb low pressure center E of the Lesser Antilles does not ultimately become a storm (Cristobal) that ends up in the Gulf of Mexico (higher gas prices) or along the U.S. East Coast.  It's pretty far south (currently at about 12 degrees north latitude) and closer to S. America than Africa, which increases the statistical odds that it could ultimately hit the U.S. somewhere, if it develops into Cristobal and does not dissipate.  Long ways off yet.

I'm surprised that so many are forecasting a high temp of 104+.
If I'm not mistaken, Kansas City recently completed a stretch of 7 years without a high temp over 100.  If trends are accurate, there is no reason to believe with a cooler than normal summer so far, that it will reach 100 this year at KCI.
My guess: 22 days over 90 with a high of 99 at KCI.
