Thunderstorms are rumbling thru Iowa this evening and the line is dropping to the southeast. I expect the storms to make it near the Iowa/Missouri border. The top tier of counties within the viewing area stand the best chance of seeing a shower or storm before 2 a.m. The big question is how far south the line progresses and right now I'm thinking that just the far northern counties could see a chance of rain tonight. Kansas City will stay dry, warm, and muggy. Our warm temperatures tonight will help to give us a jump start on the mid 90s for Sunday! We'll discuss the changes for the week ahead on Sunday. The weekend is here! Our Saturday is starting off as advertised by Gary yesterday...with some clouds and a spotty shower here and there. Rain chances are only about 20-30% today and if one of the areas of rain does find your backyard it shouldn't last very long. Along with the showers, some clouds will hang around the region today. This combination may keep highs in the 80s once again today. But unlike Friday when highs were only around 80, today we should warm into the 85-90 degree range across the viewing area.
By the time Sunday arrives an upper level ridge of high pressure will begin to push into the Plains and western areas of the Midwest. Here is a look the 500mb forecast map for Sunday showing the high.

This will send the hottest air of the season into the region with highs warming into the mid 90s. High pressure creates a general sinking motion in the atmosphere, so when an area is under an upper level ridge it should lead to a good deal of sunshine. That's what we can expect for Sunday and Monday...so they should be great pool days! Hopefully your pool isn't quite as packed as this picture taken at a pool last week in Penglai in Sichuan, western China!
The hot temperatures should last thru at least Monday before a cold front nears the region. The timing of the cold front will be key, but it may arrive as early as Tuesday. An early arrival would be good because it would bring relief from the heat and also provide a chance of shower and thunderstorms. Not a great chance, but at least a possibility of rain.
Enjoy your weekend and thanks for stopping by the best weather blog around!
