Thunderstorms forming on the front

Good evening bloggers,

Watch the 10 PM newscast on NBC Action News as we track these thunderstorms forming on the slow moving backdoor cold front.  A SEVERE T-STORM WATCH remains in effect until midnight for our northern counties.  We have had an isolated thunderstorm near Lee's Summit redevelop and I have, what hopefully will be, a great time-lapse that we will show at 10 PM (Larry Seward, one of our reporters, just reported small hail from this thunderstorm).  I actually have enough material for a 30 minute weather special tonight, but of course I only get 3 1/2 minutes, maybe.

The last two GFS runs have had heat through day 16, but the European model has had a few runs in a row that bring the cold fronts through us.  So, this is something we will address tomorrow in the blog.

T-Storms are now lined up from just north of Trenton east into Illinois, and near Falls City, NE.  Will they continue all night?  If they do, then we have a good chance of rain.  This is another thing we will be tracking at 10 PM tonight.

Have a great evening!

Gary

I'm so not a happy person right now.  Will those cells maintain intensity and make it to the metro? I just started a new job today and have to get up at like 6am.  I really need the sleep!!!

When should we expect strong to severe storms in the metro area? Also, what type of severe weather should we expect? Tornados, Wind, Hail, or a combination?

Thanks

I heard mainly large hail and damaging winds.  The SPC has us in a 2% chance for tornadoes on their convective outlook thing.  Trust me.  I feel the same way you do Chieffan. :(

Hopefully the bad stuff doesn't make it here, although, we do need the rain.

Thanks Lillyanya. Looks like it could be a long night. Hopefully not but I didn't think there was a big threat for tornados up north today and it looks like there are quite a few tornado warnings in north east Missouri right now. Hopefully they will weaken before they move south.

Thanks again

They're reporting tornadoes on the ground to the Northeast of here.

Right now it looks like all the severe weather is to the northeast moving southeast. Can anybody tell me if these severe storms are going to start forming to the north or west of here or should the worst of it stay to the east?

Thanks

A small isolated shower was overhead of us not too long ago, but nothing major.  When mom and I were coming out of the store on 103rd and state line, I saw a lot of big clouds and several heavy looking rainshafts.  Mom's boyfriend said something about there being thunder, too.

Nothing for us, now, in south KCMO, but I'm rather curious to know what might move in later tonight.  I hope it rains and cools us off, big time.

chieffan07 said:

I hope your right Wyco. I want it to cool off like everyone else but I hate thunderstorms at night, especially if they are severe. By the way, when is the Tornado threat going to be over, or is it already?

Thanks

I was listening to glens reports on the scanner, decided to chase around 8:30. Was already too little too late by than. but i heard the call for spotter activation, so being a spotter i went. got to chula and saw a wall cloud to the east but little to no rotation at all. so much for that chase!

Sorry to be keep asking so many questions, just get worried when I hear "severe", but what are the chances of severe weather tonight and into the overnight hours for the metro area? Also, is the Tornado threat over yet for the metro area (especially the Liberty/Clay Como area).

Thanks

We are getting pounded here in Trimble, MO.  No hail but torrential rain and constant wind gusts at or above 35 mph.  My rain gauge only says .31" so far, but since it has been raining sideways for the last 15 minutes I don't know how accurate that is.

Tonight driving back from Chicago on U.S. 36, I made a pit stop in Macon and heard from people in the town that the county was under tornado warning and then heard the same on the radio when I hit the road again. I looked to north where the cell was located and saw a impressive wall cloud. Tried to take pics with the cell but it was just too dark. Further west I saw two different lowerings taht appeared to be funnel clouds in between there and Brookfield. It was an impressive show!!!
