Weekend Front & Rain Chance

Watch NBC Action News HD this weekend at 8 a.m. and at 5 & 10 p.m. for Kansas City's most accurate forecast!

The weekend is here and there is some good news to pass along.  Today looks dry across the area(that's the good news), but it will be warm and humid once again.  The stationary front that brought a few showers to parts of the area now resides near the Kansas and Oklahoma border.  The best rain chances will also be near the front, or just outside our viewing area.  Here is the forecast surface map for early this afternoon.  This gives you a good idea of the front location and the surface setup.

By Sunday the front will begin to lift back to the northeast.  This will help to develop an area of thunderstorms over Nebraska and Iowa early on Sunday.  This area will then move to the southeast and could enter our viewing area by Sunday morning or afternoon.  The location of the surface front will help to dictate how much of our area see's rain.  If the front is near or southwest of Kansas City the area metro stands a better chance of seeing rain.  While if the front is farther northeast, then the rain chance will be a bit less.

Right now there's a 40% chance of thunderstorms on Sunday.  With the humid airmass in place any storms that do occur could produce heavy rain and a quick 1"+ total.  And like previous days the front location and amount of cloud cover/rain will go a long way in determining the temperatures for the second half of the weekend.  The temperature spread across the viewing area will likely be anywhere from the upper 70s to the mid 90s.

Here is a look at the 6Z GFS forecast map for Sunday.  Notice the rain dropping into areas near and north of I-70.

I'll add more thoughts later today when then timing of the rain comes into focus.  But for now the best day of the weekend looks like it will be today.  We'll have to watch any rain chances this evening and tonight.

Our new high definition set is now constructed!  The next step is to wire the set and install the lighting!  I know everyone will LOVE the new forecast center!  We have some exciting new looks that will debut the same night that the Olympics begin...August 8!

this morning has been the first morning since i have lived here(3 years) that it has felt like central florida to me...it feels great this morning.  a bit too hazy in the afternoon  probably for my taste.  but i like the early morning dew/fog in the summer, and the days arent nearly as hot as they could be.

i am starting to get wary of my 98 high temp prediction.  it would be difficult at this latitude to maintain high 90's with the relative humidity that has been the overall theme of summer to date.

Well, I am going with the glass half full theory, had a perfect winter here in north Leavenworth, plenty of snow, no brutally cold days, went into a nice spring, that set-up wonderful flowers and fruit trees and berry bushes, now summer, not unbearable hot, the evenings are great for porch sitting and firefly watching, just enough moisture to keep the lawn lush and green and my neighbors corn fields look fantastic.
All in All, give the fact we haven't suffered a major Earthquake,Fire, Hurricane, Tornado, Flood, drought, blizzard or terrorist attack...I will continue to enjoy each and everyday feeling blessed to live in Kansas.

I'm ok with no rain =))).  Rain at night may be ok but I want to be outside during the day.  I know I'm in the minority but I am loving this weather and spending as much time outside as possible.  We're headed to the Royals game tomorrow, sure hope we don't get rained out , I would love a sunny day at the K.  Have a good day everyone!

Jeremy, what time are we looking at for tomorrow's rain?  We're in the Northland, a mile west of Liberty.  Thanks! ************** If you believe the GFS there is a big MCS around Topeka, Lawrence, etc. this evening/tonight. Let's see how things look when I get into work this afternoon. Still a chance of storms Sunday...at the moment. Jeremy

Bootz, that was one of the nicest and most well-expressed things I have ever read or heard any one say about Kansas.  You really blessed my heart today.  Thank you.  I love Kansas, too.  Edna

Boootz,   I'll have to agree with weatherwunder!  I too am a Kansas-born girl and still love the state even though I now live in Missouri.  I feel we really have been spoiled most of this spring and early summer with the cooler than normal temps., and wetter ( at least in some spots! ) weather, so I really can't complain- after all it IS summer in the Midwest!  I try to get outside some everyday so I can at least acclimate myself to the heat and humidity.  I just keep telling myself it WILL get cooler eventually!  Enjoy the rest of your summer!  Dea

Brocksmama, it's funny how our perspectives are different.  I don't find it humid here at all.  But the 80-plus temps are still a lot hotter than I'm accustomed to, growing up on the ocean in Connecticut.

Matt P, LOL!!  Maybe it's because I'm getting older and don't tolerate the heat and humidity as much!  All I know is I used to be outside all the time when I was "younger" and it didn't seem to phase me- now I need to take it easier or I pass out!  I have a cousin in Phoenix who would love to have our weather- heat and humidity included!  Go figure!  Dea

Hmmm we have an MD for the area, and storms starting to kick up out west.  Any thoughts Jeremy?  Is it going to be a soggy Royals game tonight?

*****************

As I mentioned earlier I think the day is dry.  Some storms could move into areas west of the metro this evening/tonight.  The 12Z GFS was pretty excited about bringing storms near the city this evening/tonight.  The Royals game should start dry...likely end dry.  But we'll have to watch the development to the west.
