Thunderstorms Moving In!....Hail Picture!

Watch NBC Action News at 10 p.m. as we track thunderstorms using LIVE:ESP!

If you have pictures of hail in Kansas City from Saturday evening...please send them to jnelson@nbcactionnews.com

Large hail up to 2.00" in diameter fell in parts of Kansas City this evening.  This picture from Randy Moore taken around 36th & Madison shows hail around or a little bigger than golf balls.  If you live near this region and had your vehicle outside...you may want to look it over for a few fresh dings.

*****************************************

Good evening everyone.  Thunderstorms producing heavy rain, vivid lightning, and maybe strong winds and some hail are moving into the metro this evening.  If you get caught under one of the storms expect a quick 0.50"-1.00"+ of rain in a short period of time.  I think one or two spots could see 2" or more of rain...especially if a couple of these storms move over the same locations.  Here is a radar image from just after 7:00 p.m. to give you an idea of what things look like across the area.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch continues for western areas until 10:00 p.m.(see previous blog for the county breakdown).  Thunderstorms are lined up to Manhattan so storms are possible until midnight.  After that most of the activity should shift south and allow for a quiet overnight period.  I may add some thoughts about Sunday after the 00Z data comes out.

Please send along rain totals and I will do my best to include some at 10 p.m. and will show as many as possible tomorrow morning on NBC Action News Today at 8 a.m.

WOW, thanks to the NWS for not including us in the watch. It was so fun to come out of the building and drive into a hail storm. I didn't get to sit all day on the blog to see what was up so I'm guessing I got under one of those random  isolated storms that were predicted and got sideswiped by wind, blinding rain and hail dents to my car. Glad for the dry day. :(

Sorry, but digital camera is on the fritz. Luckily, the hail did not last long nor was there a lot of it. Don't think I had seen a hailstone that large in a while. Center was a little smaller than the size of a quarter with spikes coming off of that. We collected a copy for the freezer.

Seeing 3" hail earlier this year was enough for me:)

How WEIRD!  I was watching a radar at work (intersection of Antioch and Vivion Road in the Northland) and around 7:30 some VERY dark clouds came overhead.  It was almost as dark as night... no rain.  Then later there was some heavy stuff just south of my location and more stuff to the north.  Actually the radar showed rain around all 360 degrees yet none in my area.  In fact, we didn't see a drop until about 9:30 or so and then we had about a half hour of light rain.  We must have had a dome over our area or something.  LOL

well the storms got close to St. Joe, but not quite here tonight!  We still had a very interesting look to the sky as the towers of the thunderstorms reflected back the setting sun giving us at first and orange look, and then a really weird "pink" glow for a while!
One thing that Pvt. Murphy mentioned earlier today is that this is kind of what I would imagine Florida to be like, humid and storms not to far away it seems almost every day!   I will mention one thing though, this is not the most humid I have seen it, I have seen dew points reach about 83 degrees around here before, it is very rare but man is it oppressive, we would have temps around only 90 or so but have heat index values above 100!!

KCK N 18th and State:  0.07 inches

The north edge of the first of those cells shown on the above radar pic skirted my location.. bringing 5 hundredths of an inch of heavy mist and gusty winds that knocked small tree limbs down.   Very impressive cloud bases visually, but I was just north of the narrow line of fire.  I see on the NWS Pleasant Hill precipitation plot that Bonner Springs had 1.58 inches and Independence 70 hundredths.  It appeared that this heavy but narrow swath probably carried eastward to within about a mile south of my location, say around I-70 and 18th.
Probably some spots in the narrow core of the swath got over 2 inches.

It was interesting how much of the north side got nothing, including just north of my location, while another band of  less intense storms fromed just north of the airport into the Liberty area after the intense swath moved through.

It appears the siraluce split spread its influence southeastward from the airport in the northwest flow.

Weather service is saying they are issuing a heat advisory for Monday.  WeatherTeam, how basd is it going to be? Should I stay away from school and what should i do with my animals? *************** Heat or no heat there's never a good reason to skip school:) I would use precautions if you are going to be outdoors. Take frequent breaks in the shade, drink plenty of water, if you feel faint or overheated you may need medical attention. The last one is the worst case scenario, but heat exhaustion/stroke is nothing to mess with. Play it safe and you should be fine. Jeremy

Billy - tomorrow could be very miserable.  Take precautions as heat index readings could come near 110 degrees.  High temps could make a run at 100 or above to the SW side. ************* I may up the temp for Monday later today. We've had mid 90s in the forecast. Upping 2 degrees to 97/98 may be needed, but I want to see how the t-storm complexes move late today/tonight before going too high. I'd be happy with a 97 on Monday:) Jeremy

Last night I came out of the hospital at 1855 and noticed very dark skies to the south. I was so busy I had not had time to check to see if the watch had been moved into our area. By the time I strated to drive south on 435 from State Ave big rain drops were hitting my windshield. Less than a mile later the raindrops had turned into dime to nickel size hail, the wind was blowing quite hard and I could barely see due to the rain. As four lanes of traffic tried to huddle under the over pass I kept changing radio stations trying to find a weather update. Naturally, there was nothing because there were no watches or warnings out then.
I agree with Whirleygirl, wherever she was, that it was a shock to come out to such a miserable hail event. Finally, I escaped the hail by turning onto SM Pkwy, but not the heavy rain and lightning, which followed me to K-7. I didn't see a warning for JoCo or WyCo until the storm was starting to let up.  Not good.

I believe Iowa will continue to get slammed for most of the latter part of the month.  Today was the historic crest of 1993 flood in KC at 48.87 feet at 6 am today.  I remember that day so vividly. I was the one that got that one right and the NWS wasn't as fancy as it is today and they used my crest information.  We're lucky it didn't repeat this year and it certainly tried in late May.  Wow, what a difference only 125 miles makes in the different weather patterns.  We would still be in 1993.
For August, we are still in somewhat of a tropical pattern and this part of the year, it's just darn hard to predict the weather with isolated storms just appearing out of nowhere.  There is no solid fronts to move anything away as the air just remains stagnet and heats up here and there with the isolated storms giving us a fit as far as temps.
August is pretty much the month where all weather patterns and theories undergo a change.  It's somewhat like the "half time" show at a football game where you know what to expect, but are too often dissapointed and just want the game to continue.

Well the chances for rain went down 10% on NOAA. We are now at a 20% of isolated Tstms this afternoon and tonight. On Tuesday they are calling for a 40% of Tstms (it went up) and a 50% on Tuesday night. Wednesday is currently standing at a 30% chance of Tstms. Hopefully the remains of Dolly will not only bring us rain (which some of us would not mind) but will cool us off. Looking at the projected temps next week they are saying in the low 90's. So guys, how accurate do thinkthis guess of NOAA's is? Do you think we will have more heat advisories other than for tomorrow?
