Thunderstorms training over the south metro

Good early morning bloggers,

A MAJOR RAIN EVENT HAS EVOLVED!  This has turned into a near record rainfall event in spots and there will be serious flooding.  Many basements will be flooded tonight.

It is just before 1 AM, and some areas of Johnson county, KS, crossing over to Jackson county, MO, may end up with 6 to 8 inches of rain.  Flash Flood Warnings are now in effect as the remnants of Dolly continue to produce this nighttime heavy rain event. The main disturbance is still spinning our way from the south.  Here is the radar at 12:45 AM.  The area of thunderstorms southwest of Olathe is now growing, and this may make it farther north than this extremely heavy rain that is lined up over the southeast half of the city.  Wow!

Hey Gary, the rain seemed to just stay around Marceline, but now it has finally formed over us late tonight.

Looks like your lawn will get a good drink =]. I will change my mind and say 1.8 inches for KCI.

Enjoy the rain...I think August will be largely dry.  Back with the NW flow, the only hope for rain is MCS events...I don't think we will see much widespread rain.  The GFS paints a strong trough forming over the Great Lakes [somewhat unseasonable]

We will have to see...

4.76 in Olathe at Old 56 Hwy Exit.

Here is about an hour old storm report from the NWS.

At 12:55AM Area Rain Gauges in JOCO have already Indicated that over 4 inches have fallen at the Tomohawk and Indian Creek Basins. That will cause flooding Problems in Overland park and southwestward near Olathe.

My Predicted total has been blown out of the water. My house is very flood prone as there are 2 lakes withen range of my house. One at the end of my street and one 2 streets down that floods all the time.

Hopefully they wont overload and flood into my street

There is a bridge that goes over mill creek off Woodland road and 87th ln in western Lenexa.  I wonder how intense that creek is right now....it gets pretty impressive when it rains like this in inches.  More than intense it is actually extremely dangerous all along Mill Creek due to the numerous feeder creeks.  Anyone around that area?

Been raining hard with some sporadic lightning and mild-light medium thunder.  Nothing severe of course just heavy and STEADY rain off 124th and State Line on the Kansas side in Leawood.  Have no idea the precip amount here....if I had to guess it would be...a whole bucketload!  It would REALLY be nice to have the bedroom windows open to have a cool breeze come in, but its impossible with the downpours.

On the bright side...................Maybe this will drown the moles in my backyard
July 30, 2008 2:14 AM

KansasPatriot said:

madnick...I once did something to get those moles.  You know where the ground sticks up where the tunnels are undeground? Just take a garden hose and stick it in the tunnel underground then turn on the water(or in a entry hole for the mole in your yard).  Slide the hose into the tunnel about a good foot in length.  Within a few minutes those suckers will be flooded out as water gushes through their whole tunnel network, and be amazed at how many crawl out of the ground gasping for air.

They are the ugliest little things ever.

Sounds like a scene from Caddyshack. I use the steel traps with the spikes in them. In the 6 years I've lived here I think I've caught and got rid of between 20-25 moles

Gary, what in your opinion do you think we can expect today around lunchtime and through the afternoon? Will this disturbance be a slow mover and kinda "sit" over the KC metro aread producing additional rainfall throughout Wednesday?

We had some rains this evening and night, but MAN WHAT K.C. IS GETTING IS NUTS,.
I hope everybody stays safe down there, this kind of rains can be much more dangerous than a tornado situation for some areas. Well at least you guys can kiss the brown lawns goodbye!!

One thing that I notice is that on radar there is a sharp cut off, that is oriented southwest to northeast slowly moving south ward even though the heavy rain is trying to move northward, I think this is the cold front from the northern plains/midwest moving in and if it keeps pushing south then it could shut off K.C.'s rain? Maybe.

6-8" may be a little extreme...

here is the nws up to date rainfall estimates:

http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=EAX&product=NTP&overlay=11101111&loop=yes

this is as of 0630...and it paints a widespread 2-3" around the eastern kc metro area with a couple ISOLATED 4" spots...largest near olathe...granted thats a lot more than one is used to seeing, but 2-4" is a lot different than 6-8".

i thought this was heading toward the west/northwest side of the city gary! what happened?

Gary,

WOW....what an event...this will be something to remember for years to come and will for sure be one of 2008's top 10 KC area weather events when we look back at the end of the year. Anyway...3.95 inches of rain at my house in SW Grain Valley and still raining at 6:00 when I left for work...I'm sure it will be at least 5 inches by the time I get home tonight.
