Excessive overnight rainfall...July 30, 2008

Good morning bloggers,

The remnants of Hurricane Dolly produced excessive rainfall amounts overnight.  There have been water rescues, flooded basements, and road closures.  One of the driest areas this month has been over parts of south Overland Park, but not any longer (2.67" fell in one hour at Johnson County Executive Airport between midnight and 1 AM).  The center of the remains of Dolly were located right over Overland Park, KS, just west of the state line and drifting east, and now moving into western Missouri.  This is steadily weakening, but the rotation is still strong enough to have an area of rain, with embedded tropical downpours, drifting and rotating over the Kansas City metro area.  This will gradual end from northwest to southeast between now and early this afternoon but another 1/2 to 1 inch of rain could fall. Look below at the rainfall estimates from the National Weather Service:

Rainfall totals:

  • 159th & Ridgeview, KS:  6.38"
  • Johnson County Executive Airport:  6.37"
  • 119th & State Line:  6.02"
  • Near Stadium complex, MO:  5.50"
  •  92nd Terrace & Holmes Road, KC, MO:  4.99"
  • Lee's Summit (North), MO:  4.82"
  • Kearney, MO:  4.75"
  • Prairie Village, KS:  4.60"
  • Grandview, MO:  4.57"
  • Blue Springs, MO:  3.98"
  • Grain Valley, MO:  3.95"
  • Olathe (131st & Black Bob), KS:  3.88"
  • Lee's Summit, MO:  3.52"
  • College & Pflumm, KS:  3.45"
  • Liberty, MO:  3.25"
  • Greenwood, MO:  3.00"
  • Oakshire Subdivision (near Powell Gardens), MO:  1.94"
  • Paola, KS:  1.79"
  • I-29 & 64th, MO:  1.38"
  • Shawnee, KS:  1.33"
  • KCI Airport, MO:  0.96"

Dolly will continue to weaken and the rain will end today.  It may stay cloudy all day, and this is why we are sticking with our forecast high of 78 degrees.  Heat is about to build in later this week and we will be tracking this next weather development on NBC Action News today and tonight.

figures you post a new blog just as i type a response in the last one:

6-8" may be a little extreme...

here is the nws up to date rainfall estimates:

http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=EAX&product=NTP&overlay=11101111&loop=yes

this is as of 0630...and it paints a widespread 2-3" around the eastern kc metro area with a couple ISOLATED 4" spots...largest near olathe...granted thats a lot more than one is used to seeing, but 2-4" is a lot different than 6-8".

i thought this was heading toward the west/northwest side of the city gary! what happened?

looks like the rain is about done for my area, once it stops i will drop off my total.

------------------

Murph,

I think you will be a bit surprised when the totals come in.  Johnson County Executive Airport is already near 6 inches of rain, and it is falling heavily right now.  I will get the totals  into the blog, and post the estimated rainfall amounts after one more hour goes by.

So 5.01" of Rain at Jhonson Count Exeuctive Airport as of 6:30.

right now KCI is at .79" for the whole event...

Whe I went out to walk the dogs at 6:00am this morning... I had 4.90" in my rain gauge. I expect it to reach 5" + if it rains any more this morning or later today.

Are you around Braysmama?  You have a rain gauge don't you?  How much did we get in Kingsville?  When I watched the weather at 6:00 this morning, they just showed Knob Noster at .95 - it was raining,, but not hard. By the time I left and all the way in to work it just POURED so I know we got more than that inch, but wondered if you measured it?

Where does everyone get rain gauges?  Does Walmart have them?  And where do I put it?  We have a lot of giant trees that overhang most of the place -- but I don't want to stick it in the middle of the yard where my husband will kill it with the mower!  How big are they?  Thanks! Laura

Stormlover, you can get a rain guage at any hardware store.  It is best to have it in an open are with no trees.  Most can be attached to the top of a chain link fence. Some are on a stand that can be placed anywhere in your yard.

Laura--you should be able to buy a very inexpensive rain gauge from Wal Mart or a similar store. It will only measure to tenths of an inch, not hundredths, but that is still good enough for most people. Notes in the Margin recommends a more expensive one (~30 or 40 bucks I think) that does down to 0.01".

As for where to put it....well, that can be tough. You can try attaching it to a fence or a post in your yard where it's not blocked by trees.

Chickadee - you have the same one that we do.  Somewhere in there (and you can go online too) there's a spot to program which counties you want, and which warnings you want - ice, snow, flood, tornados, etc.  Right off the top of my head, I can't tell you but I know there is a way to do it because we didn't want the flood stuff either.  Look in the manual and see if there is a website - couldn't tell you what that is right now either. But there is a way to program it.  If they did it for you, you may have to do something like "restore factory settings" or something - I don't know because we just did ours ourselves.  Hope that helps!  Laura.

Gosh Chickadee, I don't remember that much!  Probably just the $29.99 - we got it a couple years ago so I expect maybe it has changed somewhat.  Ido know in the manual that it listed all the different "warnings" and we had to pick different codes for those or something.  I'm a long ways away from home or I'd run home and check!  I live out in Kingsville.  There should be a website listed somewhere - look on there and search for warning codes or something like that. If that doesn't work, most places have a "technical support" button and lots of times you can get "live" help.  I'm sorry I'm not much use! Laura

I found their website, and it had an online version of their manual, but nothing about limiting types of warnings, so I emailed Midland's customer help email address.

I'm not very hopeful I can get this turned off; their website says that only warnings which justify waking people up in the middle of the night are broadcast.  I disagree with flash flood warnings!

Chickadee,

If you haven't found out already, I am sure that you canNOT filter out the warnings. If the alert tone is broadcast with the warning, the radio will go off, if it is for your county. The NWS only uses the alert tone for warnings it feels are life threatening, and flash flooding is certainly life threatening. But they cannot chose to not use the alert tone just because it is the middle of the night. I hope this doesn't keep you from using it, because it is very important, you just have to get used to the flood warnings. Hope this helps.

I started to rain really hard last night around 8 p.m. give or take. My youngest went outside to play in it for a couple of minutes (no lightning then) when she came inside maybe 2 minutes later she looked like she had jumped into the pool. She was that soaked! The real rain started then for us (between Blue Springs, Lake Lotawana and Lee's Summit, basically the 7 and Colbern roads) and never stopped. Between the weather radio going off (4 or 5 times from midnight on) and my phone going off (I get weather text messages sent to it from two different places) there was not a whole lot of sleep going on last night (o.k., none). For those of you who were complaining that your weather radio was going off for various flood watches and warnings.. Those warnings can save people. Yes, they are a pain sometimes in the middle of the night, but I would rather be annoyed then have a creek damage my house. My daughter's boyfriend could not even get to his house because a small stream goes under his driveway (the steam bed is far below the road). He came home to 18" of water cutting across his driveway. His dad had to come and get him in the tractor. By the way, I'm one of those people who the flood warnings, watches, etc does not effect. It is nice being on high ground with no streams going through the property. (though Lake Jacomo is a little over a mile from my house) Thanks for all the rain totals everyone. We are in our own little micro climate and I have not bought a rain gauge yet. I usually use the empty 5 gallon bucket trick too. From all your totals I was able to figure out that we got about 4.5" (maybe a little  more) of rain.

David,

I kind of do want to stop using it at this point because it's like having a crying child in the middle of the night and for no good reason.  We bought it to be awoken for something life threatening, and flash flooding is not that.  I'm so frustrated with this radio, and I may look for one that allows more user control over the types of alarms it signals.

Storm total of 2.39 here NE of Tonganoxie.  It was certainly an impressive system, with a truly torrential downpour during the 3am hour.  I am sure thankful for the precip though as it is much needed around here.  It quickly filled (and overflowed) the rain barrels, so that should help with the heat next week.

Way to go on sticking to your guns last night Gary with your forecast for a significant nocturnal precip event ... there were plenty of naysayers around here when the radar trends seemed to falter, but that wasn't the full story.

I have my midland turned off most of the time because of this same reason. It can go over numerous times during a storm even and most of the time I don't feel it's life threatening to me. I know one can successfully argue that flash flooding is life threatening, and so is severe thunderstorms, but when the sucker goes off all the time for issues that do not impact my life at 2am it gets turned off. The problem is if an issue does arrive where my attention is needed, it won't occur because the midland is set to not receive alerts. This is a flaw in the design of this device that has set this midland up for failure as a consumer device.  I hope future models will address this, or maybe this is a model that does..who knows. Granted I find storms amusing at 8:00 in the evening, at 2am, probably not as much.

I had the same problem with Midland, so I bought a First Alert WX-150 through Amazon for about $35.  It allows you to specify exactly what types of warnings you want to set off the alarm for.  Not only that, but it seems to have better range, which is important for me since I live about 35 miles SE of Kansas City.

Okay Chickadee - I went to the Midland site - I clicked on something about the codes and it linked to this page:

http://www.weather.gov/os/eas_codes.shtml

It has a list of the codes for specific events - I'm 99% sure that this is what we used for ours, so I guess it could be a different model.  Maybe the older ones you could specify and the new ones you can't?  It was either the winter of 2005 or spring of 2006 when we got it.

But there isn't any place in your book that shows all these codes?

Chickadee,

I'm appalled that you don't consider flash flooding worth having your weather radio going off for at night!

Flash flooding IS the biggest killer, not tornadoes, not hail, not lightning.  Everyone needs to have a weather radio and have it set for flash flooding regardless if your on a hill or near a creek or stream.

While flooding does not affect us (my insurance agent who lives near me laughed when I asked if I need flood insurance, then they said, no we don't need it) I would rather have the radio go off all the time then have possiable issues happen. The way I figure it, tornados can happen 12 months out of the year. If the weather is unstable enough to cause a thunderstorm that lasts all night and is big enough to give us muliple inches of rain, then who knows what else it can produce. Even though no tornados were prodicted or expected, I know that they can happen when they are not expected. I would rather be tired the next day then have an unexpected event happen and not be prepared. I guess it is my "training" from living in California and having the chance of an earthquake anytime and anywhere. I would rather be too prepared/paranoid than have an issue. Just my two cents worth.

My wife once tried to turn off my weather radio when it alarmed, but failed.  So she unplugged it, but back-up batteries kept it alarming.  After finding and pulling out the batteries, she took the radio and slammed it against the wall, shattering it.

The storm damage to the inside wall of the house was somewhat minor.  The radio, however, was totaled.

Off topic, but I just thought that everybody who loves roller coasters like I do would like to know....

Worlds of Fun in Kansas City is now building a **NEW wooden roller coaster** set to be completed summer of 2009!  Worlds of Fun has been keeping this on the down low, but I was told about it a few days ago.  I was told that it will be a little bigger and faster than the Timber Wolf.  If you ride the train at Worlds of Fun, you can see many orange flags and a lot of wood for the future roller coaster.  They will be broadcasting this info by around January 1st.

Just thought I would pass this wonderful news along!

My daughter and I have a question... It concerns lightning. Why does the lightning have different "colors". We have seen blue, yellowish, pinkish/orangeish and of course white. Are the different colors due to pollutants in the air? Is it because of the distance the lightning is to us? All of the above? Also, how many of you look to nature to tell what the weather is going to be like? Gary, since the geese are already starting to fly South, does that mean that we will have an early and or extra cold Winter?

Like I said, I don't mean to downplay the importance of flash flood warnings.  Flash floods are dangerous, but they aren't dangerous if we live on a hill and are asleep in our beds on the top floor of the house.  In that way, I think users should be able to disable flood warnings, the way we can disable county warnings not pertinent to us.

At the end of the day, I found out from Midland that you can't disable specific warning codes.

I'll look for a product that lets me do that.
