The heat is on...

Watch NBC Action News HD this weekend at 8 a.m. and 5 & 10 p.m. for the latest on the heat and when relief will arrive!

Good sweaty Saturday bloggers!  The heat and humidity will continue to build this weekend as an Excessive Heat Warning continues for the metro.  High temperatures will top out in the low 90s today with dew points in the 70s again.  This combination will help to push the heat index to 100 degrees or higher this afternoon.  Outside of a couple of stray showers very early this morning it has been dry as I write.  If more showers don't develop by 10 a.m., it should remain dry today.  If you are heading to the Royals game which starts at 2:55 p.m., make sure to drink plenty of water and wear light colored clothing.  First pitch temperaures will likely be around 90 degrees and unfortunately the wind will only be about 5-10 mph.  So don't expect much relief from the wind.

As the upper level ridge pushes farther east on Sunday so will the dome of really hot air.  This will translate into temperatures in the mid 90s for the metro and heat indices possibly as high as 110+ in spots.  The highest air temperatures the next few days will be on the Kansas side of the viewing area where some spots will make a run at 100 either Sunday or Monday.

Here is a look at the heat index chart from the NWS.

Relief will arrive by the middle of next week in the form of a cold front.  The passage of the front will also represent our next decent chance of seeing some showers and thunderstorms.  By Wednesday of next week high temperatures should retreat back to the 80s with the humidity easing some too.

A total solar eclipse occurred yesterday from parts of northern Canda into Asia.  If you are wondering when the next total eclipse will occur in the United States and in Kansas City here is the information in a story that I wrote on Friday.  Check it out!

Have a great Saturday and try to stay cool!  Thanks for stopping by and don't forget the debut of our new set and forecast center is only 6 days away!

Great article! Even if we do have to wait 8 more years, I'm excited that we'll get to see one in Kansas City!

Hopefully it won't be cloudy that day:)

Why does the NWS use relative humidity in that chart instead of dewpoints? Makes it harder to calculate if Gary says we might see dewpoints near 80 degrees. I have to take of my shoes and socks to calculate something like that. ***************** Try this... http://www.weatherimages.org/data/heatindex.html

Was last August's heat wave accompanied by this high of dewpoints? Or is this the highest we have seen in a while? I can't remember. I think the La Cygne area is going to make it in to the mid-90s today. It is already 88 degrees outside. At 5:30 this morning it was somewhat pleasant out - had a NE breeze.... well that is long gone now. *************** On the news this morning I showed a graphic that had low 90s in KC and mid 90s to the south and also west. You will may be around 94 or 95. Jeremy

All I know is that when you come inside and 74˚ feels like the deep freeze, then it MUST be pretty hot outside!!  Not a good day to be walking around getting block party signatures!!

94, dewpoint of 78, for a heat index of 110 at the Lawrence airport. Lovely day here in the tropics. **************** Yuck...that's about the best way to describe it! Although I will still take it over a snowy 20 degree day. Jeremy

Bring on the cold front!!!

It is 86 degrees here in Marceline with a dewpoint of 71 degrees, and a heat index of  92 degrees.

Much more comfortable here than it has been a bit west.

Jeremy, are you seeing any potential for severe weather or more heavy rainfall around the area with this next approaching cold front.

Juba- side effects from tetnus shot should only last a few days up to a week at the most.

I remember the eclipse in 1978 (does that tell how old I am).  I was in elementary school and we went out on the playground and I think we had made special "eclipse viewers" to look at it.

Wow, that eclipse thing is unreal, St. Joe would be in the DEAD ON path of totality!!
I will be very MAD if it was cloudy that day, unreal!  What do they know what time it will occur?  Now I have something to look forward to the next 9 years or so!

*****************

The track of the eclipse goes across the entire U.S. with a narrow path having a total solar eclipse.  And if you are still living in St. Joe you will be right in the middle of the action!

Kimberly, I too recall being in elementary school during the last solar eclipse and making some type of viewer from a cardboard box and other materials that now escape the memory horizon of my nearly 40 year old brain!  I'll be looking at the next one as well, although I'll give any odds anyone wants that it will be a cloudy day.

For the first time in my life, I've seen an 80 degree dewpoint. It's 90 degrees here with heat index over 110. All of this humidity is from the remnants of Dolly, I presume. It's absolutely toxic outside.

Even with the forecasted temperatures though Tuesday, I believe we will reach our APEX or highest mean temps for the year.  Our average day highs and nightly lows will go down after this weekend- which is about 12 days earlier than normal.
If you graph the highs and lows for the last 6 months and combine for a mean temp over 30 days, we hit the mean temp (so far) on July 26th.  Since July 26th, our mean temp has gradually fallen.

***************

Gary,

I think this will be our hottest stretch this year.  At least some 'cooler' air will arrive by the middle of next week.

So obviously heat and humidity alone cannot produce thunderstorms?!  Probably a silly question.  I think if they could, we'd for sure have a couple today!!

********************

We have a big layer of warm air in the atmosphere, not very good for t-storm development.  No t-storms until Tuesday or Wednesday.

This horrible heat makes me wonder what the middle and end of the month will be like. We are going to the state fair the weekend of the 16th. Is there a long range forecast for August somewhere? I ran a search, but wasn't successful. No way do I want to be walking around the fair all day in this kind of weather. TIA!

*******************

We don't expect there to be an extended heat wave in August.  We should cool down next week.  I'm sure we will have another hot period, but maybe this will be the worst in August(I hope).

Hey Weather Team - I think this would be a good opprotunity to take another poll like you did during the deep freeze this past winter, on blogger's preferences - 100 degree days versus 10 degree days!  Wonder of all of the people that voted for the summer heat still think that way now - especially after seeing their latest AC/KCP&L bills!!!!  Bring on the SNOW!!

********************

I think Gary may do a poll tomorrow night(he's doing the 10pm show) or on Monday.  We'll give everyone another day of the heat to see if their opinion's change.
