10 AM update....New T-Storm Development

10 AM update:

We are monitoring an organizing complex of thunderstorms over north central Kansas.  During the last half hour cloud tops are cooling, and thunderstorms seem to be forming into an MCS.  If this tend continues, it is perfectly placed to move across us later this afternoon. We will have live updates on NBC Action News Midday beginning at 11 AM. And, then I will have the blog updated early this afternoon if this complex of thunderstorms blossoms.

Previous entry below:

Good morning bloggers,

5 inches of rain fell overnight in Anderson county!  There was a lot of lightning, and now the question is will they get hit again tonight?

We hope you are enjoying the cooler weather.  The heatwave broke yesterday with temperatures dropping into the lower 90s.  Today, we should stay below 90 degrees, and now our attention switches to tonights chance of thunderstorms.

Look below at the 6 AM surface map:

Thunderstorms ovenight have helped push the cold front down to near the Oklahoma/Kansas border.  The 06z run of the models have picked up on this southern position of the front, and as a result are predicting tonights big thunderstorm event to be farther south than I thought it would be.  But, I am not convinced yet.  Just like a snowstorm, this set-up will produce a sharp cutoff on the northern edge of the rain tonight.  Kansas City may be right on that northern edge.

We will be tracking these developments and much more as the new data comes out.  Jeremy Nelson is filling in for Brett Anthony, who will be back tomorrow.  So, he will be tracking these new developments through the Today show this morning.

Hi Gary,
It is nice outside!  Hope it stays mild the next couple months to give the ac bill a rest.  :)
If you get a handle on the rain tonight, perhaps you can post some info in the blog for us folks that have to work all day & can't see the tv.  Going to the K tonight and would like a heads up for the game.
Thanks!

I'm with you on thinking that we may still get a good rain out of this in KC.  M

While I wouldn't mind a few inches of rain in La Cygne, I don't want the 5 inches that happened just to the south of me. What are the rain predictions now?

Wow 5 inches to my west...I am not surprised by that. Those cells just exploded right over us and Anderson and did not move for awhile. Thank goodness I did not get that much. I got 1.62 inches. Can I expect more today??

Thanks Monica.  You didn't really need any more.  That's a nice total.  Have a fantastic day.

I drove through Lyon County, KS this morning and noticed significant flooding in low lying areas with heavy rain continuing.

I am in southern Anderson County and we are sitting at 2.68 inches and it is raining again now. We had an amazing lightning show last night. We have not had an electrical storm like that in quite some time! It kept me awake for a while becaue the thunder just kept shaking the whole house and the lightning was so close that you would hear and see it all at once!

Gary,

We are headed to Silver Dollar City for several days, beginning tomorrow night.  With the thunderstorm activity moving farther south, how does the weekend look for the Branson area?

Gotta ask the most reliable forecaster, ya know! ;-)

Thanks!

Christa,

Thanks, it does look like the thunderstorms will be there tonight into Thursday, but hopefully it will dry out the rest of the week for you.  Have a great time.

by the way, someone may want to check the 'almanac' on the weather page, something tells me that the averages for today arent 83 for a high and 62 for a lo...

******************

Hmm...it pulls the info from the NWS.  I'll have to make sure it is getting the right info.  Average high today is still 89.

Can you give us an update on the ETA for those storms this afternoon?

------------------

The ETA, GFS, and others all have some precipitation forecast for us this evening.  But, it comes down to now you can see it on radar.  So, what do you think it will do.  Our dewpoint is 71 degrees at 1 PM, and this MCS is trying to move right towards us.  Will it make it here?  We should know by the time I am on at 5 PM.

What would make it NOTget here?!!  It seems like everything is in place for it not only to make it, but to strengthen on the way.  A front nearby, a disturbance heading right toward us, high dewpoints....are we capped?

Looking at radar loop it looks like it is not gaining any strength at all as it heads toward the metro. The last couple of runs does look like it is getting better organized on its southern edge. But this would miss KC several counties to the south. Maybe the new blog this afternoon will break this down better.

Maybe I missed this ahead, but what time are you expecting these storms in KC?  I have to catch a bus downtown around 3-4, and dont want to get soaked if possible.

Honestly....this evening we will have ripe conditions and we can predict all we want, and at the same time we all here know mother nature is full of shock and surprises.

It wouldnt surprise me at all to watch the radar tonight and see mild activity and then WHAMO....out of nowhere a line of very strong storms explodes and rushes to Kansas City with a fury of electric power......oh one can dream cant he?
