10 AM update:
We are monitoring an organizing complex of thunderstorms over north central Kansas. During the last half hour cloud tops are cooling, and thunderstorms seem to be forming into an MCS. If this tend continues, it is perfectly placed to move across us later this afternoon. We will have live updates on NBC Action News Midday beginning at 11 AM. And, then I will have the blog updated early this afternoon if this complex of thunderstorms blossoms.
Previous entry below:
Good morning bloggers,
5 inches of rain fell overnight in Anderson county! There was a lot of lightning, and now the question is will they get hit again tonight?
We hope you are enjoying the cooler weather. The heatwave broke yesterday with temperatures dropping into the lower 90s. Today, we should stay below 90 degrees, and now our attention switches to tonights chance of thunderstorms.
Look below at the 6 AM surface map:

Thunderstorms ovenight have helped push the cold front down to near the Oklahoma/Kansas border. The 06z run of the models have picked up on this southern position of the front, and as a result are predicting tonights big thunderstorm event to be farther south than I thought it would be. But, I am not convinced yet. Just like a snowstorm, this set-up will produce a sharp cutoff on the northern edge of the rain tonight. Kansas City may be right on that northern edge.
We will be tracking these developments and much more as the new data comes out. Jeremy Nelson is filling in for Brett Anthony, who will be back tomorrow. So, he will be tracking these new developments through the Today show this morning.
