Our new Weather Center & walking the dogs..updated

The opening ceromony for the Olympic Games, in China, begin at 6:30 PM on NBC, right after NBC Action News at 6 PM.  We debut our new Weather Center and News Set at 11 PM tonight!  Did you know that it is 13 hours later in China.  So, it will be midnight tonight in China when it is 11 AM this morning in Kansas City.

Update at 10:45 AM:

The new models are coming in wetter and wetter for the weekend.  There is a disturbance that moves across us Saturday, and a second on Sunday morning.  We will be tracking these developments on our newscasts tonight.

Previous entry below:

Good morning bloggers,

It is a great start to the weekend.  Beautiful high based cumulus clouds are floating across our sunrise sky this morning with no wind.   A great morning to walk the dogs, and I have two visitors this weekend.  Slick and Stuey have come to visit Breezy and Stormy for a week.  Slick and Stuey are Miniature Dachshunds, and the first 5 minutes were intense as Breezy had to get rid of her nervous energy.  So, we went for a walk and then all four welcomed each other into their new little pack, and now they are all getting along.  I learned this by watching the Dog Whisperer.  But, it is challenging walking four dogs all on leashes, as you can see below:

Stuey is the one next to Stormy.  Slick is the older one on the right.  Breezy is behaving on the left!

There is one disturbance that could bring us some showers or thunderstorms Saturday afternoon, and then the main disturbance on Sunday may take the rain just west and south of our local area on Sunday.  We will be tracking these developments on NBC Action News today and tonight!

Have a fantastic day, on 08-08-08 (today's date).  Don't forget about our 11 AM Midday newscast, and we are excited about sharing our new Weather Center with you at 11 PM tonight after the Olympics.  Please send in a blog comment after you see the set tonight, and I will try to read a couple on the air.

Gary,

Do you have an idea of what time it would rain on Sunday, if it rains at all?  Will the morning and early afternoon stay dry?  I was thinking of taking my daughtter to the zoo.

Thanks,
Melanie

-----------------

Melanie,

Sunday is such a tricky forecast.  There is going to be a lot of rain just south and west of us.  I am just not sure yet that it will get here.  If it just misses us we could have the clouds without the rain.  And, then you will have a great zoo day.

My brother and his family are planning to come down from Lincoln tomorrow to visit us and then go to Worlds of Fun sometime in the evening.  Should I tell them to stay home because its going to rain on them, or do you think tomorrow evening will be okay?  (Probably going to WoF around 5 or 6)

---------------

There is a chance of rain, and it is something we just have to "nowcast" during the day on Saturday to see if it is moving in, moving out, or staying close, but just west of us.  The latest data is brining the rain in.  We will be more confident by tonight.

Good 8-8-08, Gary!  You have waited so long for this date, and here it is!  Congratulations on your new studio and Weather Center, just in case I can't keep awake that late.  I'm an early bird--usually get up about 4:30 or 5:00, so 11:00 pm is a bit late.  I hope to set the VCR in that case.

The two pictures are both great, but I vote on the second one as being the most interesting!  Did they keep such a nice walking pattern the whole way?  I think you must be a dog whisperer yourself!  Edna

----------------

Edna,

The walk was very challenging at first, but then as they settled into it they pretty much walked together.  Every once in a while one or two of the dogs would have to stop and smell the roses, which made it challenging, as the other dogs pulled away.

Emmysmom, don't change your plans. For one thing, any rain is much more likely to the SW of town than up at Worlds of Fun. Also, are you really going to cancel plans 36 hrs in advance based on a slim chance of rain?

Gary, enjoyed the pictures as usual!  Perhaps I should try walking Brock with his arch enemy- the next door neighbor dog, Eddie whom he wants to eat!  He gets along with Eddie's 2 yard mates, just not Eddie!  Anyway, a quick question- will you still be having the  5 and 6 p.m. newscasts during the Olympics, or just the late newscast?  Don't think I'll be able to stay up that late every night!!  Can't wait to see the new set- I WILL stay up tonight!  Dea

-----------

Dea,

Yes, we will have the 5 and 6 PM newscasts.  All newscasts are regularly scheduled except for the late ones, which will really be on late.

Have a great weekend.

Thanks of your thoughts, RDub.  : )  And actually, yes, my family might want to cancel their plans if it might rain, just because the main reason for coming down is WoF and if they are going to get rained out of doing a bunch of stuff, they dont want to waste the money this trip.

Emmysmom, Sat night at WOF is a no-go based on your interests/risks.  It will rain Sat evening/night in the region.

My thoughts anyway.

Gary and Team, fellow bloggers,

We have planned to have my daughter's Sweet Sixteen party, a luau, on Sunday from 4 to 6 pm, at a pool no less!  What are the chances we will get rained out?  Most of her parties have been so hot in the summer time that we can hardly handle them, but of course the biggest one we plan to throw and it looks cooler and wetter. Any thoughts????

Gary, I was looking at the NWS Enhanced Radar Mosaic Loop for the Upper Mississippi Valley Sector (http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/uppermissvly_loop.php) this morning and I saw something unusual around Des Moines, Iowa so I captured the radar loop and have it at: http://arhodgins.info/uppermissvly_loop.gif It looks like something exploding over Des Moines. Have you ever seen that before? What could it be?

I cant wait to see the new set tonight!

Dog whisperer is one of my moms favorite shows. She tries to do some of the stuff with her Long Haired Chihauhaus, but I think they are to stupid to understand.

I couldnt imagine walking all of those dogs on different leashes. It is hard enough to walk my lab cody by herself...lol

Breezy is such a beautiful dog. Good luck witht he dog training.

Arhodgins - It looks like Des Moines went supernova!

LezakEF5 - Cesar would say your mom isn't demonstrating the right energy to be the pack leader.

As for the weekend's rain, I'm hoping it verifies since the wife and I canceled our camping trip (her idea, not mine).  Instead we're having people over for "soda" and poker.

Ahhh not rain this weekend. I have a rodeo to go to Saturday night and then The Race for Cure at Union Station Sunday am. I hope this stuff works around all my plans, LOLOL!! I would cheer if you ended up alittle off about the rain...sorry, I know you do not need or want that. I am just being selfish about my weekend plans. Hahh!!! The pictures of the dogs are cute. Have a great weekend.

micshell, I think you will be ok for Sun for your time period.  I think the morning should be cloudy and have scattered rain, but it should clear out later in the afternoon.

I am less concerned about the Sunday morning disturbance as I believe it will be too far south for anything long lasting or signficant in the metro.

Arhodgins- perhaps that was just a ground clutter anamoly or a radar sensitivity issue?  If not, then I agree with Zazel - it went supernova.  LOL

Its always fun on slow days to look at other days matching in the cycle to see what happened.

Interesting to see the same thing over and over again to reconfirm the cycle...

Here is from June 13th..this time in the last cycle...

"We are going into northwest flow, and even though there will be chances for strong to severe thunderstorms, what we have seen lately is likely over for the season, and right on schedule.  .. A block is developing (I point to a developing upper high over Canada) which will likely lead to some cooler air next week, and some set-ups for northwest flow thunderstorms."

Looks very similar to what next week looks like minus the severe weather [due to later in the year]

I just find this so interesting day after day after day...

Wow I forgot about the 8-8-08!!
Well we are having incredible weather for crazy 8 day!!
It will be interesting to see the new set after the Olympics, another thing that is neat about China is I believe that the entire country is in one time zone, it is a big country for that but that's the way they want it I guess.

I saw the pictures of the opening ceremony online, since as Gary explained they started it at 8:08pm on 8/8/08, which was about 7 hours ago our time.  Anyway, it looks like they put on a pretty amazing show over there and obviously had a lot of fireworks.  Can't wait to see it in HD and then the new set afterwards.

*************** Sorry...there are media rules that NBC has in the U.S. I saw those pictures came from the UK. If you have a link from an NBC/MSNBC site with Olympic pictures by all means post it. Sorry...anyways, we want everyone to watch tonight too:) Jeremy

Arhodgins, maybe that has something to do with HAARP.  Awhile back I came across a website that was collecting and discussing radar anomalies.  I tried looking for it again for you but I could not find.  Maybe someone else here knows where you can find information about your radar loop.

What happened to the no rain until Sunday bit. This weather is driving me nuts. Can't plan squat!!! I've got a show to go to on Sat. evening at Longview and don't know whether I should spend the better part of Saturday getting the horses ready to just have them stay at home and look pretty in the barn. I'm I am soooo done with this LRC - I want a drier one.

Whoops, I didn't mean to stir any trouble with the big dogs at NBC by posting that link.  Wow I didn't know that stuff was under such tight control, but I guess I understand with what NBC has invested in the Olympics.  Anyway, it will be an amazing performance tonight.

CUTE, CUTE, CUTE!!!  I just love your pups.  We are just as attached to our "boys" as you are to your "gals"!  They truly make a house a real home, life just wouldn't be worth living without these beautiful, loving creatures.

Roll on the rain!!!!  (crossing fingers)

--------

The forecast is tricky, as I still see no evidence of any rain development. It is going to be an interesting 36 hours ahead.
