Dolly & Edouard....tough weekend forecast

Good late afternoon bloggers,

Meteorologist Jeff Penner & I just analyzed the satellite movie & model data and you may not believe this, but guess what is heading our way, and rapidly changing Saturday's forecast?

What was left of Hurricane Dolly came across our local area on July 29th and 30th.  Then, just a little of Dolly was left as she drifted back into the Gulf of Mexico early this week and became Tropical Storm Edouard.  And, now what is left of Edouard is rotating across southern Wyoming and heading right towards us.  This disturbance has not been modeled well at all by the models, and our forecast is still a very difficult one for Saturday.  As the very weak remains of Edouard move across the Kansas/Nebraska border tonight and Saturday, we will be placed in an ideal spot for strong lifting and an area of rain, that could be a cold August rain. This is just fascinating to us, as we could be affected in strange ways by this tropical combination of Dolly, Edouard, and the anticyclones demise.

We will be analyzing the new data, and right after the Olympics opening ceremony we will be able to make this forecast with more confidence.  The brand new NBC Action News Set and Weather Center will debut at 11 PM tonight.  We will be showing a sneak peak at it right at the end of the 5 PM newscast today.

Gary,

Is that a high in the 70's over the weekend and low's in the 60's as far as the eye can see?

Is it August or April?  I love it!  Can't wait to check out the new set tonight.  I trust ya Gary, but I hope this isn't a big letdown.  With the huge buildup that its received the last 3+ weeks it better be good!

Here is a little treasure hunt.

First, I start the journey with the HPC, and their last guidance for Ed.

http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/discussions/tcpat5.html

We start with where Ed was as of Wednesday at 10PM.

THE
REMNANT LOW ASSOCIATED WITH EDOUARD WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 33.6
NORTH...LONGITUDE 99.8 WEST OR 80 MILES...129 KM WEST-SOUTHWEST OF
WICHITA FALLS TEXAS AND 175 MILES...282 KM WEST-NORTHWEST OF
DALLAS TEXAS.

And now where was it heading?

THE DISTURBANCE IS MOVING TO THE NORTHWEST AT APPROXIMATELY 13
MPH...21 KM/HR. THIS GENERAL MOTION IS EXPECTED OVER THE NEXT 12
HOURS.

Given that track and the time elapsed, the moisture/energy would head NW from TX.  But..did it really go to Wyoming?  With the ridge pushing the flow in reverse due to the upper level high flow?

How about an alternative theory?

The next leg in our journey goes to the HPC again, but in another spot…

http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/discussions/qpferd.html

Certainly is a lot of moisture and PW values in the return flow…seems as though the moisture associated with Ed stayed a bit south?

Here is an interesting tidbit from DDC NWS in their discussion…

http://www.crh.noaa.gov/product.php?site=NWS&issuedby=DDC&product=AFD&format=CI&version=1&glossary=1

“ALSO OF NOTE WAS AN AXIS
OF FAIRLY HIGH DEWPOINTS SITUATED ACROSS THE PANHANDLES INTO EXTREME
SOUTHWEST KANSAS INTO SOUTHEAST COLORADO.”

So..based on all this, I think “Ed” did not make it to Wyoming, but instead made it to SE Colorado.  With the stationary boundary in place and the disturbance aloft coming in along it…I think it is the moisture from Ed that with contribute to the rain event.

As far as “Then, just a little of Dolly was left as she drifted back into the Gulf of Mexico early this week and became Tropical Storm Edouard.”  I doubt this now.  Seeing images of the genesis of Eduardo in the Gulf while Dolly was overhead in KS makes this hard to believe.  Sure, the moisture might have helped develop Ed, but his genesis was there prior to moisture from Dolly coming down into the Gulf.

Oh..and this is what might be thought of as the “cool” rain…

“A WEAK UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE WILL DRIFT SLOWLY TOWARD THE
SOUTHERN PLAINS AND INTERACT WITH A STATIONARY FRONT TO PRODUCE AN
INCREASING AREA OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE SOUTHERN
PLAINS ON SATURDAY.  NORTH OF THE FRONT...RAIN WILL FALL AND
TEMPERATURES WILL BE UNUSUALLY COOL FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR.

http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/discussions/pmdspd.html

Gosh..I love this NW flow that is keeping the temps down.  On time as expected!

LOL - Rdub.

--------------------

You read that first statement, and then track the disturbed area northwest at 13 mph and then turn it north and there it is in southwest Wyoming today!

Wow, what strange effects Gary? It is amazing! what goes around comes around even in the weather world. As long as the temps stay down, and we can chew away at the remainder of summer heat, it is one day closer to fall weather and temps.

RDub, thanks for the education on the meaning, pronunciation, spelling, and usage of the word "cold."  How long did that take you because it was very thorough, not to mention hilarious.  I would have responded sooner, but I've been laughing too hard!  Silly me, I actually thought that there might be a weather phenomenon called a "cold rain."
August 8, 2008 4:30 PM

EdRoberts said:

No... there has been an area of disturbed weather in the intermountain west for some time. This is what is coming out of Wyoming. Edouard's remains never made it futher north than NE New Mexico.

----------------------------

Ed,

I am not so sure!  We watched it on satellite, and I believe that it is at least somewhat part of Edouard, Ed!  Maybe it is 10to 20% Edouard, but I think it is just a bit of a combination.

Either way, it is a tough forecast for Saturday.

Great pictures Gary.  We're back from NYC, instead of kenneling the dogs (Hoss, Popeye and Windy) we have a friend come and house/dog sit for us.  She has a dog too, so there is always an adjustment period when a new dog is in the mix. The Dog Whisperer definitely has alot of helpful hints, especially about understanding the pack mentality.  The weather in NYC was amazing, absolutely perfect for sightseeing and Yankee Stadium.  It was our 5th trip to NYC and it usually rains at least one day we are there.  Typically it is a brief shower and we can usually outrun it by jumping on the subway and heading North or South.  It's good to be back in Kansas, gotta love the humidity and sun here =), and wide open spaces and seeing the sky and being far, far from crowds and traffic noise.  Great vacation, we'll probably go back again next year.  Sure hope you're right about the rain, as much as I hate rain we really need it here in Paola, everything is starting to dry up and turn brown.  Leaves are falling off the trees in droves and the foundation is shrinking a bit.  So I'll concede...bring on the rain!
Have a great evening!

Why debut the new set on one of the least-watched broadcasts of the week - particularly such a late Friday show?  You should have done it at 5 or 6 tonight - right before the Opening Ceremony of the olympics...I'll be asleep tonight!

----------

Notes,

I wanted us to debut the set at 6 PM, but I didn't get to make the decision.  And, the ratings tonight should be one of our highest of the year, if not the highest.  Hopefully NBC has it set up to have the most exciting part right before 11 PM.

Stormdog - Gary, my last post was referring to the shorter term computer models, especially in Summer and late Spring - 5 day forecasts I feel are a waste of time, except to provide what "could happen" not what will.  Your LRC is worth a lot, and I haven't taken away my support of it.  Just the 5 day forecasts and computer models often aren't exact, or sometimes even close to it.

A blog or two ago, I believe I ventured the thought that "what if Eduard does a similar track to Dolly" - kinda fits a reocurring cycle in  a way - this is what seems to be the way this year is for tropical systems that venture far into TX etc...

Later,
Dog

---------

Dog,

Thanks.  5 day forecasts aren't worthless, you just have to know how to use them, as a trend.

Hello Gary and the weather team..

Rain is the last thing I need for Saturday.    I'm bowling in the Kansas City Big Guy / Little Guy tournament at Aarons Family Fun Center in Belton.   Cool / Cold damp air and rain makes for sticky approaches.   Would like the weather clear and warm with temperatures mid 80's...

Thanks
