A change in the weather pattern...August 11, 2008

Good morning bloggers,

First of all, have you been watching the Olympics?  Jason Lezak, who helped the USA win the gold in the men's 400 free-style relay, is not related to me, "If Michael Phelps breaks the Olympic gold medal record, he might just have U.S. teammate Jason Lezak to thank for it. Lezak mounted a spectacular comeback against France's Alain Bernard in the last 50 meters of the men's 400-meter freestyle relay on Monday, and the Americans snatched gold in a race they looked sure to lose".  I didn't even know other Lezak's existed until 4 years ago when Jason Lezak made it to the Olympic team.

Anyway, now onto the weather.  We believe that the LRC, as we have experienced it this year, has gone through a transition.  The pattern we are seeing right now is still somewhat related to the LRC 2007-2008, but there are some different things happening that convince me that it is now a hybrid of the old pattern.  Look below at the two maps:

The flow over North America has split, and there is one stream coming right over us from the northwest, keeping our weather cooler than average.  And, there is the main jetstream over Canada.  On the second map below, some energy starts sagging/digging into the plains states this week. By Thursday night and Friday an upper low is forecast to develop somewhere to our northwest.  This is still somewhat related to the pattern that we have been in all year, but there are some subtle differences.  I want to watch how this storm evolves and develops.  It is still looking like one of our "slide by" storms that we first saw in October last year.  So, let's keep watching how this storm develops, forms, moves, tracks, and falls apart,  as it will help me explain how there is something different going on.  And, according to my theory, the LRC, next year's weather pattern won't really show up and develop until after around October 1st.  These developments now are just an indication of some chaotic, yet gradual transition.

This next storm system holds a lot of uncertainties on how it will affect our weather.  We will be tracking these developments on our newscasts tonight.  There is no midday show today because of the Olympics, but we will be on at 5, 6, and then 11 PM tonight.  Our late newscasts will be on at 11 PM each night, except for Wednesday and Thursday night when we are on at midnight.

Have a great start to your week.  There is a weak backdoor front that has stalled west of Kansas City this morning.  As this drifts back to the east tonight I am expecting some thunderstorms to develop.  So, our next chance of rain will be tonight and early on Tuesday.

And, even though Jason Lezak is getting all of the attention today, I thought I would throw in a picture with my trainer David. David has been training me for two years now, and as hard as it has been, I am dedicated, although he says I wine way too much while I am working out.  Here is a picture on Saturday night, he and his wife took me out to dinner where we were supposed to eat healthy.  I am on my way to workout right now, it's chest day:

Well you answered my question already Gary, because I've not heard the last name Lezak other than you, so I thought he might be related.  Maybe you're very distant cousins, who knows.  Anyway, that race was what the Olympics are all about, because I was actually screaming & cheering at the TV for a swimming event.

By the way, nice digs on the new set.  You guys look better than some of the national news broadcasts and most major cities.  Keep up the great work!

Oh and how can I forgot how nice it is to have "cooler" weather like this in August.

--------------------------

Thanks, and this cooler weather will continue for another week.  I have some ideas on how to utilize the features of the new set that will even take it to another level.  Watch this week and let us know what you think.

Awesome race last night!!! My hubby asked if he was a relative of yours...I told him I doubt it cause you had not said anything about him on the blog and you would of been talking about him.

I truly can not believe this August weather...I missed my 90 days by sooooo much. I was just sure August would not let me down, it is always so hot and humid. School starts tomorrow down here, it will be nice to have comfortable weather for the kids to play at recess.

Thanks for the great weather for The Race for the Cure yesterday :o)  What a emotional experience that was, my sisters, mom and I were just in awe of the whole experience....even after walking 6 miles that day. We did the 5K and then walking to and from our car which was another 3 miles at least.

The set looks wonderful, I actually got to see it last night. Have a great day!!

Monica,

I can't believe that school starts tomorrow in Pleasanton.  Isn't this earlier by about a week, than normal?  What grades are the kids going into?

Have a great day.

Hi Gary,
Finally got to check out your new set last night.  The color scheme is great, but what really stands out is the use of the textures that are incorporated.   Another thing that struck me is the depth or space, between you guys and the background.  All together it's almost a 3D feel to it!  Very very cool!
Loving this cool August weather too.  Good job!

Wow I was just setting my U-Verse DVR to record the upcoming Olympics action and saw that it's going from 7-11:30pm tonight and until midnight on Wed and Thurs.  Holy Crapple I didn't realize it was going this late, but I'll be watching for sure.  Gary or someone in the know at NBC is it going this late so that they can show events live our time, but actually the next morning in Bejing, since we're 13 hours behind them?  I do like seeing the swimming events live, hope they do that for other sports too.

---------------

Yes, it is because some big events are live.  Ouch, I didn't even know tonight was 11:30 PM. Hopefully it is 30 minutes earlier.  These are going to be very long days.  At least the weather is interesting and exciting.

Gary,

Though the temps have been below normal...there are some of us, as stormdog mentioned yesterday...that need some moisture badly. Only .08 of rain at my house since July 31st...This current pattern has not provided widespread rains, only localized areas have gotten decent rain totals, hopefully tomorrow morning, those of us on the eastern side of the metro will get our turn, I see KCI continues on the dry side as well.

Enjoying the new set...Keep up those workouts...plus I saw the commercial last night during the Olmpics of your baseball abilities as well. WOW, how did you do that??? Needless to say, I was impressed!!! : -)

Jeff

------------

Did you see the basketball one?  I will be blogging about them, and I will get them linked to the blog sometime this week.

The rain hasn't been spotty either.  Our viewing area has just missed out since August began. We should have a good chance later this week.

Gary, what is a backdoor front?  I've heard this term before but am just not sure what it is exactly.  Keep up the great workouts- it's obviously paying off!  I have enjoyed your "most accurate" commercial where you are turned around shooting the basket!  How many tries did it take or did you get it on the first try?!  Although this weather is destroying my chances of winning the contest, I would take this over "normal" August weather any day!!  Dea

----------------

Dea,

A backdoor cold front is one that comes in from the northeast or east.

It took about 20 tries, and I made 3 of them.  The one we showed swished through.

Wont have to worry about "new data" coming in for the newscasts...you will have plenty of time with 11:30-midnight news segments.

Forget about the models..you will be able to nowcast at that time...LOL

-------------------

Scott,

There is the advantage. Albeit small!  If viewers stay up, then they will get a forecast with all the "new data" analyzed with updated graphics.  But, will I be tired?  Coffee, probably.

How can you be tired when we are going to get a taste of fall this weekend.   It is so rare to get this kind of weather this time of year... what a wild pattern.

You nailed the summer forecast for the cool temps.... that is for sure.    We can debate the rain all day, but some got alot and some did not.    Its the fault of the LRC that teased us all winter long.... but no March blizzard :P

Have a great week

Someone mentioned your new commercials Gary, I didn't know you were so gifted in basketball and baseball, lol?  I think you could win a million bucks with that over the back half court trick shot.

As for the late hour of the Olympics, I'll admit that I'm crashing after 11:30 or Midnight.  I'll watch the 6pm and hope nothing changes in 12 hours for the morning show.  Well so much for getting sleep the next 2 weeks.

Gary are you sure Lezak on that relay team isn't related, because he's from Irvine, CA and I know you've said that's where you're from CA.

-------------

Maybe he is a distant cousin, but as far as I know, I don't think so.  I will get the promos on a link soon.

It feels great outside today, do you see any signs of another warm up with some more 90's in the near future?

I start school here in Marceline on the 21st. I just took my Senior pictures on Friday at Rox's Images in Atchison. Now I have Senior Composite pictures on Thursday. Summer has gone by way too fast for me =[.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for clearing that up about Jason Lezak.  I was wondering myself:)  As far as your picture...keep up the good work.

I have been watching the Olympics as much as I can and Friday night I did stay up to see you on the new set.  Very nice!  Very eye appealing.  But I was too tired and too lazy to email you about it like you had asked the viewers to do that night:(

Have a great afternoon!

Hey Guys! just got out of the hospital and was happy to get out to some awesome weather and am happy that's it's going to be cool for a while. Gary, like someone up there said, nice guns! lol. Do you think are rainy part of the LRC is over, some may disagree but I would sad if we didn't have as many storms the rest of the summer.
Have a great one!

It could get stormy later in the week.  So, let's see.  And, we hope you are feeling well.

For those of you interested in Hurricane weather this time of year, since our own weather isn't quite as exciting, I think you'll find this interesting.  I don't understand all the complexities of hurricane development, but Dr. Jeff Masters's seems to think that the wind shear will be very favorable for hurricane development:

"If these wind shear forecasts come true, we are in for a very active main portion of hurricane season, since wind shear is typically the single most important factor inhibiting tropical storm formation."

SO NOW THE SECRET OF YOUR POWER IS OUT... IT'S THE LAST NAME;) LOL
Well the models are not overly bullish on the storms for tonight and tomorrow, but we will see, the diffluence aloft over the northern plains is really helping them out, erupting lots of shower and thunderstorm activity up there.  So the LRC is now starting its long fading process... The roulette wheel is getting dusted off somewhere.

-------------------

It is a very slow process as the evidence is still there that what is going on this week is still very much 2007-2008 LRC.

We moved from the Northland to a small rural town NW of Austin on Lake Travis. Sorry to say NBC weather in Austin lacks the good high quality weather that you always gave us.  It is medicore at best. Austin is a great town, wish you would transfer here. The photo of you and the Dauchshunds are great. We belong to three wires. Assume Windy is gone. She was getting frail when we moved. Looks like you have two great weather dogs. We have nothing like them here.

TexasMarilyn,

Thanks for the note.  Windy died two years ago, and of course I still miss her.  Breezy and Stormy are awesome.  Breezy has had various aggression issues, but she is the greatest dog after she gets to know you for 5 minutes, and she still has issues with other dogs.  But, right now Breezy and Stormy have two house guests, Slick and Stuey.  They all are getting along perfectly.

Have a great week.

What does the weather team think the chances of this knocking on our door by morning?
