Super Saturday...Amazing Olympics!

Watch NBC Action News HD this weekend from 8-9 a.m. and at 5 p.m. & after the Olympics at 11 p.m. for the latest weather information!

The weekend is here!  High pressure is dropping into the Midwest and will provide for one of the best weekends weatherwise all summer long.  Highs should warm into the 80s, sunshine should be abundant, and the humidity will stay in check.  Today started with very comfortable conditions with morning lows in the 50s and low 60s.  Here is a look at the surface map for this afternoon.

Outside of our weather a focus this weekend will be Tropical Storm Fay which will likely strengthen into a hurricane by late this weekend or early next week.  Right now the storm is producing heavy rain over Haiti and the Dominican Republic.  Here is the forecast path from the National Hurricane Center from Saturday morning's forecast.  Keep in mind there is a lot of uncertainty in the forecast path and anywhere in the 'cone' area of the forecast needs to monitor this storm closely.

I'll show you some unique looks at this developing storm as the weekend goes on.

Very few big events live up to the hype, but this year's Olympic games have been amazing!  If you missed the Olympics last night you missed one of the greatest swimming events of all-time!  Michael Phelps won his 7th gold medal of the games in dramatic fashion last night.  Here is a replay of the race that was shown live on NBC!

You can watch Michael go for gold medal number 8 tonight live during NBC's Olympic coverage.  After the Olympics make sure to stay tuned for NBC Action News HD!

Good morning Jeremy!

What a beautiful morning!  Glad the weekend is going to be a nice one.

By any chance, did you check out the Star this morning?  Go to F2 (FYI).  Gary's picture is there.  He's being compared to Jason Lezak.  LOL!

Have a nice weekend!

I heard about what Micheal Phelps eats before he goes out to swim, and shuddered.  I don't know about anyone else, but I'd barf after eating a THIRD of what he eats, LOL. ************** We had something on what he eats each day on our morning show today. 12,000 calories each day!

We went to the movies last night and strangely, for a Friday night, the theater wasn't busy. It dawned us that everyone was probably staying home to watch the Olympics.

So far the Olympics have been some of the greatest theatre in years!  Hopefully people keep tuning in!  Michael Phelps races live again tonight!

WOW, this is by far the best day this Summer.  Mid 70's, calm wind, fairly low humidity, partly sunny skies....Thank you high pressure!!!!

Alex,

I think where you live you could see lows in the mid 50s tonight!  If you leave the windows open you might actually be a bit too cool.

Wow, what a performance by Phelps!! Even after they showed the instant replay I still thought that he didnt win. It wasn't until they showed the super slow-mo that I realized that he did win. What a finish!

That was just crazy last night.  I don't know if I was more excited last night or when Lezak came back to win the relay race!

My theory of being in the same pattern as 04 is holding true.  I still believe we've already had out hottest day of the summer.

Jeremy, nice weekend to work eh?

Oh...I think some people are looking for this....

No rain, I was wrong.  Pass the salt.  All in all, it did rain over 2 inches in the area since Thursday, but certainly has not rained today.  It is VERY nice outside!

I think the ULL in Colorado is lost.  Someone help it find its way.  I have not seen anything quite like this pattern from last year.

***************

That ULL acted kind of odd.  But I'll take the nice weather since it puts most people in a great mood.

Time to gear up for the Olympics tonight!  I don't think I've ever cared so much about swimming before:)

Turd Fergenson,

Considering that it is only August, nobody can make anywhere close to a accurate forecast for this winter, even though it is fun to think about!  But my "gut feeling" is the complete opposite of yours.  I think it will be milder with much less precip than last year.  We will see what happens here in about 2 1/2 to 3 months in Gary's winter forecast.

Turd Fergenson,

Have you taken a look at the latest forecast for TS Fay?  Here is the latest model tracks. It seems like the latest models are taking it a bit more west. If this happens, this could be stronger hurricane.  Maybe Cat. 2...

Maybe Cat. 2, It Depends on How Much Time It will be in the Gulf of Mexico. If it Takes a More Western Path then It will stay out in the Gulf more. If it continues on its track. Then it will Hit Florida Pan Handle and stay about a cat. 1 hurricane.

We will see.  We both know how these things can change track in a blink of an eye!

****************

NHC puts the winds at 70 knots...so just hurricane strength by early this week.  Keep in mind parts of Cuba have some very high terrain which can weaken slow moving storms quickly.  It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but maybe the rain is the bigger story than the wind with this storm.
