Morning Thunderstorms!

Watch NBC Action News HD from 8-9 a.m. and at 5 & 11 p.m. for an update on weekend rain chances!

Good Saturday!  A large area of thunderstorms developed across the region overnight.  Rain totals have been impressive in spots.  KCI picked up close to 1" of rain by 6 a.m.  Here is a look at the rainfall estimates from the Topeka radar(Pleasant Hill radar is down).  Areas around Trenton and Chillicothe have also seen rain, but this radar doesn't quite reach that far.  If you have rain totals please pass them along and I will be using them throughout today on our newscasts and on NBC Action Weather Plus!

The area of rain and thunderstorms is weakening as I write.  But the showers will likely linger through a good part of the morning in some areas.  How quickly the clouds break up and the amount of sunshine we see today will determine how much temperatures recover and also if we are able to see more thunderstorm development this afternoon.  Right now I left a chance of t-storms in the afternoon forecast and highs should be in the 80s today.  The NAM has thunderstorms around on Sunday, while the GFS keeps them mainly south.  I am going to add a 20-30% chance of storms to the Sunday forecast.

I'll update things a little later.  Please send along your rain totals and I will add a list to the blog later today!

Hey Jeremy!

Looks like the atmosphere finally came correct this morning.  I was beginning to wonder...

These storms caused a few departure delays out of KCI this morning as they began to collapse as they passed by the field leading to numerous wind shear reports, with one rather impressive 20 knot change in 200 feet!

Anyhow, I hope yours and Gary's lawn got the drink it needed today!

Have a great day!

Morning.  I'm hoping the front stalls out today, so far less than .50 inch, and the ground has such big cracks.  Watching the radar this morning it was like the rain couldn't make it south of 70 or east of 435... so the southeast part of town hasn't had much.  Got my fingers crossed we get a couple good downpours today.

Has the front passed through yet? Or is it still north of KC?
Thanks

Front is just south of the metro, the rain helped to push it south overnight.

Where are you located?  Wondering for your rain total.

Jeremy,

I don't even have .20 inches of rain although it's misting heavily so maybe it will end up being more.  But that's fine since we're going to the air show!

Have a good day.

Jeremy, 1.55 here in the Hills of Walden near I-29 & 64th in the Northland ... and still drizzling.

That thunder and lightning was impressive. I woke up at 4:30ish and watched the NWS radar and it looked like the heaviest part was moving right down I-29.

I'm curious as to how windy it got, too, as our back porch umbrella was lifted out of the table and deposited about 100 feet away in our backyard. Actually, the strong wind was the reason I checked the radar. I was a little worried for a few moments!

KCK/N 18th and State:  1.23 inches ( I knew if I watered the front lawn yesterday the rain would be forthcoming!)

A few very close lightning bolts, one of which sounded like it hit the roof of the house.  That brought my wife downstairs to sleep on the sofa, along with the two dogs.  (Hard to know for sure if it was a direct hit, as I have lightning protection system installed that should be 98 percent effective.)

A few strong gusts of wind at about the same time.

This was a timely rain.. the monthly total is now a half way respectable 1.73".  Year is now 35.52".

Hi again,
In looking at the radar, it seems there is a little twist out in northwestern ks on the neb. border kicking up some rain.  Since we have sun now steaming things up, does this bode for more rain later on.... say at the Royals game tonight?  Not that I wouldn't mind more on my garden, didn't get much this morning.
Thanks!

Hi Gary!  Well, I have to tell you I was laughing at you this morning on the weather.  My husband was laughing at ME because I say you're always right!  There were some green rain blobs right where I live -- and it was dry as a bone!  The sun didn't come out until just a while ago and boy it is pretty humid.  Not like it was a few weeks ago, but when I roused the pups up to go out and play I was shocked!  I guess I was expecting some low humidity and low 80s!  Oh well!  Just wanted to tell you that your radars were a little off this morning!  :)  Hope you're having a great day!  Laura

*****************

Laura,

I mentioned that the Pleasant Hill radar was/is down.  So in using the Topeka radar the radar beam is higher when it reaches the metro of KC.  This in turn means the beam is hitting a much more elevated part of a t-storm or even part of the anvil of the storm.  Since the beam is so high up it may not accurately represent what is going on at the surface.  So a green blob over your house with the Topeka radar may be a bit off on location or picking up rain well above the surface.  Hope this helps.

Gary and I do look alike:)  I just wanted to explain the radar thing since others may be wondering too.  Pleasant Hill radar should be up and running around 5 p.m. today.  I'm sure the crew at the NWS was missing it this a.m. too.

Jeremy, Thank you for that Beautiful early morning thunderstorm today, I loved it. I got the opportunity to go to the Air Show today. What was more fantastic than the air show was the weather! The humidity was not nearly as bad and actually almost non existant at the down town airport as I had feared that it was going to get 75 to 80ºF dewpoints. But it didn't. so it was great. Some really neat stunts and great loud jets. There was quite a bit of waiting between planes which was annoying but I had a great time. if anyone plans to go tomorrow just plan to wait a lot, but the Thunderbirds at the end are spectacular!. Have a great day everyone!

**************

Jonathan,

The morning rain helped to push the front to the south, along with it the higher dew points.  So this afternoon was pretty nice.

I watched the Thunderbirds from our deck off the second floor at the station.  They were kind of far away, but still fun to see.  The best air show I've seen is the annual one in Chicago.  I think it is usually the 2nd weekend in August.

I'm in Liberty & we didn't end up with any more since I posted last time...not even .20.  However, the weather at the air show was great...probably the nicest I remember.  It was cool & cloudy this morning so they crowds didn't get bad until about noon.  It really wasn't hot until after lunch so that was really nice.

.72" in Springdale KS or Just NE of McLouth, KS was the reading I had this morning.  VERY WELCOME!
I didn't think we would be nearly this dry this August.  But a stretch of summer in some form had to come sooner or later!   I bet summer will be slow to fade, not sure.. usually are first seasonal change hits somewhere around the 15-20th of September, nothing drastic but almost like clockwork every year it seems.  Looking forward to the making of the 08-09 LRC, were getting closer to that time of year already, I can't believe it.

***************

Thanks for the total...I'll add it to the list.  It has been dry this month, but just think how much worse it would be if temperatures would consistently be in the 90s.  Things would dry out very fast if that was the case.  Glad the rain found you this morning!
