Thunderstorms have arrived...updated

Good evening bloggers,

Thunderstorms are mostly staying below severe levels, but they are quite active with lightning and very heavy rain.  Some spots will still likely get missed, but along and south of I-70 will have a chance at 1 to 2 inches of rain.  Livingston county is also getting hit by a very heavy thunderstorm at 5:45 PM.  Please send in your rainfall reports if you do get some signficant rain.

KCI will end up without even one drop of rain today. A line of thunderstorms finally formed at 6:30 PM and now it is pushing southeast.  Those of you ahead of this line may still see 1 inch of rain, perhaps a few locations getting more than that.

We will have a weathercast at 10 PM tonight, after Obama's speech and we will cover the tropics, the holiday weekend forecast, and next week's weather on NBC Action News.

We too are in Lee's Summit and we have tons of rain and lightning. It is hard to see out the windows it is raining so hard. Lots of lightning bolts striking close to the house. We are near the intersection of the 7 and Colbern roads. It might be slowing down a bit, thank goodness.

We still have rain, but it is just rain, not pouring at over 2" an hour rain. We have lightning in the clouds. I am not seeing nearly as much cloud to ground lightning. I would have to say that is about 95%-98% done. The light outside is a pale gold (my husband says pale grey). It almost looks like Sunset lite.. Thunder still being heard. I would have to agree with Gary, I think we got 1-2" of rain based on the water level in the pool.

WOW, 1.54 here in SW Grain Valley! Seems like the storms formed right on top of us...lots of vivid lightening, thunder and period of small hail. Wish it could have formed just a bit further north, so the whole city could have gotten wet.

Jeff,

At least you got a nice soaking. There were many areas that were left dry!

Why does this always happen...Kansas City is so divided when it comes to weather.  Seriously...is there anywhere else where you can get this split?  It happens in winter too.  You either get pounded or you get nothing.

We need another line of storms to plow through the areas where it missed the first time!

I dont know you guys, remember that we lived on an island here a few months back and storms had a habit of "diverging" or going around us..... I'll go WAY out on a limb here and say KCI and the Northland get missed altogether, downtown gets a .10th, south Olathe gets the bulk of the rain.
August 28, 2008 3:52 PM

I cant explain why, but as I saw the radar at that time, lots of development up north, but an obvious GAP was on radar, then out west more development. Some strange reason: we have something happening right over KCI that causes weather to disappear. Kinda like the Bermuda Triangle.....

Here's to a DRY AUGUST. Perhaps we might catch a band of GUSTAV if he makes it far enough North.....

Been the story all year in Liberty.  Rain in all directions but over us!  I agree with you Boise Fan something is going on around here.  I saw the gap in the radar earlier and set-up the sprinklers.  My wife was mad at me for watering when storms are coming.  I told her we weren't going to get any and she thought I was crazy, until now.  Sure glad some are getting some great totals!

Patriot - I know it feels that way for sure.  Looking at the data, sure, more rain fell away from KMCI, but temps were largely the same.

Comparing Chillicothe and Olathe...almost exactly the same.

Because most storms are not large systems..it can work out that way...

What a weather afternoon in St. Joe, at around 4:45 p.m. the first cell hit( actually kind of grazed us to the north) and it brought a very interesting shelf cloud that blasted us with very strong winds starting out of the northwest and ending up out of the north-northeast, this knocked out our power, knocked down an old large dead limb that apparently was still in one of our trees since the June 8th storm I'm guessing. I can't overstate how neat this shelf cloud was, it was very low and kind of looked like it was rotating somewhat. Well we got some rain big drops, a quick mod. downpour and then it backed off for a while. at about 5:50 p.m. another cell moved in and we started having some crashing thunder and a downpour, while the lowering sun came out at the same time, NEAT! as that was happening we were given a double rainbow which dad did try to take a pic. of with his digital camera.  Well finally at about 6:50 p.m. the power was finally restored.  Don't think it was a big enough storm for the power to have to be out that long, but it was anyway, all in all, I am glad today was my day off;)

A grand total of 25 rain drops in my neck of the woods around the 1-29/35 split. It was just enough to make my car look dirty because of all the dustbowl we have in the Northland. Oh well I enjoy watering my plants, guess that is a good thing because we sure have not had any luck getting any rain up North. Congrats to all those who got rain.

Unfortunately I had to be at Auto Zone all day for work, well actually I was really just being the delivery driver all day and while I was delivering. My Store location is at roughly I 35 and Santa Fe(135th St) and I was delivering parts to a sister store all the way up in KCK and I noticed a HUGE Cumulus Congestus billlowing and in no time it became a mature cumulonimbus that I had the pleasure of driving through in a light weight rear wheel drive ranger on the way back down to the home store. I'm use to driving a subaru with All wheel drive. It was intimidating. So I beat the storm down the store and no more than 20 minutes goes by and the wwind picks up and it just pours like hell. There is then a break between the rain and a customer comes in needing a battery. Well we install batteries free of charge at Auto Zone and so I tell him I'll put his battery in. no later then when I said that. It begins pouring again and the lighting and thunder begin to roar like crazy but none the less I installed a Part number DG-35 Duralast Gold Battery in his car during a roaring thunderstorm. So that's my day for you guys LOL Have a great night! Off to do it again tomorrow!

Here in Marceline, we got a severe thunderstorm earlier that about blew me off the road when the wind gust came through, then it dumped very heavy rain. There are several tree branches down, and there was a monster sycamore tree branch I saw laying on the ground as well

I have 0.5" in my guage....just enough rain, that I will have to mow again on Monday =[.

Monthly total 1.75 inches.

The Siraluce Split was in full force with this event.. no measurable rain within 10 miles or more of KCI, it appears.  Unfortunately, the Siraluce Split effect was so strong it eliminated any significant rain north of I-70 - at least on the west side.

Fascinating!
