Hanna & Here Comes Ike!...Saturday UPDATE

Watch NBC Action News HD this weekend from 8-9 a.m. to start your weekend with Kansas City's most accurate forecast!

*******************

A quick Saturday morning update on our rain chances today.  If you look at the rainfall forecast map that I posted last night the rain this morning is lining up almost exactly like this map.  Rain chances in the metro are about 40% and greatest later this morning into the afternoon.  Best rain chances are south of I-70 early and then moving northeast by afternoon.  With lots of clouds around highs will be cool again...likely in the upper 60s in KC...cooler in areas that see rain for much of the day.  Make sure to check out LIVE ESP for the latest radar trends.  The start of the K-St., KU, and Missouri football games this evening look dry.  Also, the Royals should have dry weather.  Enjoy your Saturday!

*******************

Good evening bloggers!  It was another cool September day across the region with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s.  Keep in mind the average high is still in the low 80s!  You can access our daily climate page on the main weather page each day!

Here is an update on Tropical Storm Hanna and Hurricane Ike.  Hanna will make landfall in the Carolinas tonight as either a very strong Tropical Storm or either a category 1 hurricane.  The difference right now between Hanna's strength and hurricane force winds is only 4 mph.  So either way it is going to create some problems in the mid-Atlantic.  If you want to see the impact Hanna may have on the Chiefs-Patriots game on Sunday please check out this quick read.

Hanna will race north-northeast this weekend and move into Nova Scotia by late Sunday.

The greater concern down the road will be Hurricane Ike.  Ike has been a major hurricane for the better part of the last 2+ days.  When looking at hurricane forecasts from the National Hurricane center please keep in mind the day 4 and 5 tracks have a margin of error around 250-300 miles!  So it is good to focus on the 1-3 forecast when looking at the hurricane forecasts.  With that said, it is tough to ignore the forecast and the trend by many models to put Ike possibly into the Gulf of Mexico sometime next week.  Here is the forecast path.

If Ike would make it into the Gulf of Mexico this would put a lot of stress on areas that have already had to prepare for one or more tropical systems this season.

Here is an evening look at the water vapor image associated with Ike.  Earlier in the day Ike looked a little ragged, but it appears that the hurricane is beginning to strengthen once again and get reorganized.  The dark colors represent dry air, and notic the dry air is not wrapping into the storm.  Often times hurricanes encounter shear or dry air that will weaken them at some point in their life cycle.

Our weather for Saturday looks cool again with highs in the upper 60s to around 70.  Clouds will also stream into the area once again.  Showers will occur in parts of the viewing area.  But the bulk of the rain should be south of I-70, or even the metro.  However, some of these showers could creep into the metro so we still have a chance of showers in the Saturday forecast.  Just look at how close the rain is to Kansas City!

This is the rainfall forecast for Saturday from the 00Z NAM

I'll have all the updates on the morning show on Saturday starting at 8 a.m.!

Twister11 ... although I am not Gary, I listened to it ... sounds cool, but is there something meteorological we're supposed to get from it? I kept thinking it was going to have modified lyrics about the LRC or something weather-related!

Wow, that shortwave Monday into Tuesday looks pretty impressive,(for an early season starter anyway) looks like a cool, breezy and rainy Monday eve./night!?
The 12Z GFS goes insane with Ike, hopefully it is out to lunch on that one. ******************* Nick, That storm for Monday is likely going to put a crazy spread of temperatures across the viewing area. Maybe upper 40s or low 50s in northwest Missouri and close to 80 near Clinton! Jeremy

If Ike makes it into the Gulf what is the likely hood it will impact our weather like Gustav? I've got lots of outdoor plans the week on 9-13 and I am hoping they are not rained out like they have been all year long!

Happy Rainy Saturday to all,
Loving this mild weather, just hope there's no snow next month :o)

Anyway, I would like to double check, NOAA is calling for a 40% chance of more rain tonight, and you said up above on the update this morning that the Royals game should be dry.  Does it still look dry?  Hate to pack the rain gear along if we don't need it.
Thanks!

I guess there could still be a few showers around this evening...but the trend should be to dry out this evening and tonight from west to east.  The overnight showers look to stay well south of KC.

WOW, it has turned out to be a wet early afternoon here in St. Joe the rain has been coming down at a good mod. clip for a bit now, Monday sounds like it will be a fun weather day, the question is will it make me break down and wear a jacket or will I hold and just enjoy the chilly feel without one hmm...

*****************

Monday looks pretty wild.  That front will be the dividing line between 70s and 80s and 40s and 50s!  I went 75 for KC on Monday now.  But very likely the front sets up over or near the city.  It could be around 80 on the south side of town with upper 50s on the north side at some point in the day.  Tough to pick one number for Monday:)

Bah Humbug!  It's sprinkling on our block party!!  Glancing up our street, we don't have a very good turnout so far...  Maybe it will clear up...

Still looks kind of damp this evening(wet along highway 36).  The dreary weather continues...  I want the 70s and 80s to come back:)

what are the models saying bout Ike once he gets into the gulf? Concerning Track and Intensity. I see the majority of the models point to LA, but what about the Intensity forecast? If he does hit there as a cat 3, etc. Hopefully people still head the warning, just because Gustav wasn't major, they shouldn't let their guard down.
