Damp Saturday...Interesting Storm Ahead...Sunday UPDATE

Watch NBC Action News HD this weekend at 10 p.m. Saturday and beginning Sunday morning at 8 a.m. for the latest on rain chances!

****************************

Hurricane Ike slammed into the Turks and Caicos islands overnight as a category 4 hurricane.  One automated weather station on Grand Turk island reported a sustained wind of 114 mph!  Over 80% of the homes have been damaged or destroyed on some of these islands.  I'm sure the pictures/video that become available later today will show the devastation.

Our weather today will be an improvement on Saturday's very dreary weather.  For today will see a mix of sun and clouds with highs in the low to mid 70s.  More clouds will stream in this afternoon ahead of our next weather maker.  A stray shower can't be ruled out today, but that chance is at 20% right now.  Don't cancel any outdoor plans.

***************************

What a dreary start to the weekend across the region!  Clouds and showers kept temperatures in the 60s.  I still want to remind those that enjoy warm days that the average highs is still in the low 80s...so it will warm up at some point soon(I hope).  Until then let's focus on the cool and damp weather.

This evening we can expect the showers to taper to some drizzle and then end from west to east.  The clouds will linger for much of tonight.  Any areas that do see clearing will have fog develop quickly with light to calm winds.  Lows should drop into the mid 50s.

The Sunday forecast is a little better than today's weather, but still temperatures will be well below average.  Skies will be on average mostly cloudy, but likely variably cloudy again.  There is a chance of a shower or two, but the best chance will be south of the metro.  Highs should warm into the low 70s.

Our next significant storm system will arrive on Monday.  With a warm front lifting north on Sunday Night and the low level jet transporting moisture up and over it there will be a chance of showers and thunderstorms overnight.  The Monday forecast will hinge on a few things.  First, if thunderstorms do occur early Monday how many clouds are left over and how quickly will they clear?  Also, how far north will the warm front push?  For the past several days it looked very cool for Kansas City, but now I think we should warm into the 70s on Monday, with some parts of the metro maybe reaching 80 or better.  As the warm front sags south a strong cold front will move in.  This will drop temperatures potentially into the 50s by late afternoon or during the evening as showers move back into the area.  Here is the GFS temperature forecast late Monday.  Look at the spread across the viewing area!  A little shift either way and we could see highs in the 60s or 80s!

The temperatures will be tricky...but so will the rainfall forecast.  If thunderstorms do occur both Sunday Night and again with the front later Monday the forecast below will likely end up lower than the actual totals.  But this is the rainfall forecast from the GFS to give you an idea of where the heavy rain corridor sets up.  I know Gary believes that we are still in the same pattern(LRC) that we were last winter and spring.  And just a quick glance at this map lines up the heavy rain corridor with many of the spots that were hardest hit with heavy rain this past spring and record snow in the winter.

Hurricane Ike continues to churn west-southwest as a major hurricane with maximum sustained winds estimated at 135mph.  Ike is forecast to continue on this track and eventually make landfall on the island of Cuba.  Depending on how much interaction the storm has with Cuba will go a long way in determining the structure and strength of Ike if it does move into the Gulf of Mexico.  The forecast error is so large 4-5 days out that one must keep in mind the forecast 'fan' that the NHC issues along with the forecast path.  Right now anywhere in Gulf of Mexico needs to keep a heads up for a possible hurricane late next week.

Here is the latest forecast path.

I hope everyone has a great Sunday and please tell your family and friends about our weather blog and also our newscasts which can be seen on Sunday from 8-9 a.m. and at 5 & 10 p.m.  Starting this Sunday and continuing until the end of December, the 10 p.m. show will begin right after Sunday Night football.  Is anyone else excited for fantasy football?  I know Gary, Jeff, Brett, and myself are each in at least one league!  So if our weather has signaled the transition into fall, the start of the football season should.

Ike really looks like it could be a dangerous storm in the Gulf of Mexico next week.

A lot will depend on how much land interaction Ike has with Cuba.  There is some very high terrain on the island.

I am really hoping that you will knock that high on monday back down to the upper 50's with lots and lots of rain.  My yard is looking so much better and I love that cool weather!  On a side note I am very happy that Ike has taken a turn away from Florida since we have family who are going on vacation to Disneyworld!  We aren't going until Nov. 30th.  We were trying to avoid the hotter temps and the hurricane season.  Anyway have a great weekend everybody and GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check my thoughts about Monday that I just added...

Last week you posted your sister station's url so we could watch live coverage from New Orleans. I hope you will consider the same thing as Ike approaches. It was fascinating to see how the "locals" actually handle this evacuation.

I'll add that again this week if the hurricane moves into the Gulf and threatens coastal locations.  Let's just hope New Orleans catches a break this time.

You mentioned that Gary believes we're in the "same pattern" as the last year according to his theory...do you agree?

I spoke to my mother back in New England tonight.  She said they had some heavy rain at times and were expecting wind gusts in the 50-mph range, but nothing extraordinary.  She's in Connecticut, about as far southeast as you can go (five-minute walk from Rhode Island and three miles from the ocean).  Just watch the movie "Mystic Pizza" and you'll see where she lives.   She did say the northwestern part of Connecticut had three inches of rain in just a few hours and was expecting flooding.  The hills in that part of the state range from 1,000 up to 3,000 feet above sea level.  That will probably channel a lot of the water into the streams and create some floods.

I DON"T LIKE IKE!!! What is the chance that if Ike hits the Louisiana/ Texas coast that it travels up to KC? I've got scheduled outdoor plans all during the week of 9-15  through 9-20. Sure would hate to cancel them again...

***************

At the moment it is tough to tell where Ike will make landfall along the Gulf Coast and the possible strength.  So to forecast where it heads inland is still way too early.  Later this week another front will move into our area, so some rain is in the forecast already for the time frame you are wondering about.  I'll keep everyone updated on the status of Ike as more data rolls in.

Watching the 6Z GFS, which normally stinks at initializing tropical storms, has Ike clearly, and brings it into the Gulf.  This is not new information, but what struck me was how clear the GFS has it...and...how big it makes Ike in the Gulf.

Will have to see..but not liking this set up either.  Verde storms are not the most forgiving on the Gulf.

Too much rain, everything is getting that moldy, stinky smell outside..yuk!  It has rained here everyday for the past 5 days!  No significant sunshine to dry things out and thus mold is growing as the ground is saturated here.  Paola always seems to get way more rain than we need.  I miss sunshiny days, I'm already thinking about and dreading the gloomy, dreary days of winter.  Farmgirl, I hope you can get your outdoor activities in over the next couple of weeks, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Well, despite the drizzle, we ended up with a good turnout at our block party last night!  I am excited about the prospect of temps. in the 50's tomorrow- hope that pans out!! I would love having "Fall" year round!!  However my coffee consumption would go WAY up!!  I can't believe the Gulf may get pounded by yet another hurricane!!  Doesn't hurricane season usually end around the end of Sept. ?  Bet the people in the gulf can't wait for it to be over!  Dea

Hurricane season usually ends at the end of November.

The forecast for Monday is tough to say the least!

We were at the Spinach festival in Lenexa yesterday and it was a great cool day until the rain moved in. I felt bad for all the people who were frantically trying to cover up their booths so their merchandise wouldn't get wet. Today while I was out walking my dog I saw a wolly caterpillar. His coat was pretty thick; the Farmers' Almanac would say that's a sign of things to come! =)

Looks like so showers building just to the South of the metro- will we get wet sooner than we thought.

I mentioned a stray shower was possible today.  So those little showers are right on cue.

Once the low level jet kicks in tonight we will see thunderstorms develop.

still thinking kc and points north? i have a sneaking suspicion that things may be a bit further north...not sure why though.

what time do you prog the front progressing through kci tomorrow jeremy? around 1100 or so?

****************

Front should move through by early afternoon.  Later in areas to the south and east.

I think the storms fire up tonight...probably after 2 a.m.  These little one's right now shouldn't build into the main line.

How much rain are you expecting the storms on Sun Night/Monday Morning to produce?

*****************

Totals will vary greatly since we are talking thunderstorms.  Some areas could 1-2" of rain...while others will be 0.25" or less.

The most active t-storm right now is just north of KCI.  About 15 lightning strikes in the last 10 minutes with that one.
