Morning T-Storms & Cold Front

Good morning bloggers,

Strong to severe thunderstorms formed in a line ahead of a warm front this morning.  A band of rain and thunderstorms is also forming along a cold front over northern Kansas.  This cold front will bring a cool change to the area this afternoon.

This line of thunderstorms is lifting north as a warm front tries to move in from the south. This afternoon the cold front will overtake the warm front and we will turn much cooler.

Meteorologist Brett Anthony will  keep you updated on NBC Action News through the Today Show.  I will update the blog soon.

i heard the break-in on the severe thunderstorm warning about 4:50 earlier this morning and decided to wait it out since i'd have been hitting NW Olathe at about  the same time it was supposed to be there. then heard gary at just past 5 saying it wasn't severe any longer, so headed out. still hit heavy rain near 435 and I35 and saw major lightning strikes all the way out K10. one of them took out the power here at the honeywell aerospace plant. yikes!

Mike,

These thunderstorms have been quite electrically active this morning.  Have a great start to the week.

So when the cold front comes in will there still be rain or are we done with the rain today thanks.

There will be a chance of thunderstorms as the front moves through, and it will likely be followed by a band of rain.

3.24 inches of rain here at 130th and State Avenue in western KCK in the last 4 hours!!

Wow,

Can you send some my way down south?  I still have a pond with a beach around it as not one heavy thunderstorm has hit the south side of the metro area since July. Oh, I have had nearly 2 inches of rain in September, but not one deluge like you just experienced.  Thanks for the update.

at 6:30 we had 1 inch in Liberty at 7:15 we had 1 3/4 inches so the prediction of 1 inch per hour was pretty accurate.  Still lots of thunder & lightening.

LOL Tim in Shawnee, sure hope you were able to get your dog out!  I went walking Windy at 4:50, lots of lightning and thunder but it all passed in about 10 minutes here in Paola, no rain for us, thankfully.  It's cold though...brrrrrrr!

2.94" 169 & Englewood, and quite the lightning show this morning.

September has already been more than 6X my August total!

Great stat!  It has rained seven out of the first eight days in September.  KCI had rain on Friday, but they didn't report a trace, and I wonder why?

Monica,

I think it is worse for me than for you.  Even though you had nothing this morning, at least you had the 2 to 3 inches last week.  There are isolated locations around the south side of the KC metro area that have literally been missed by every heavy rain event since July.  The grass is green, but the ponds are low.  Have a great day.

Plenty of rain in my part of Miami Co. 4+ inches this month already!  So strange how the rainfall has been spotty.  We are green and even somewhat saturated in low lying areas especially in Wallace Park along Bull Creek which is up and flowing fast.  I noticed alot of mold growing in places on my walks this weekend.

Drove the daughter to school at Bishop Miege in heavy rain- had the wipers on full blast!  Back here at home my rain gauge only shows .40 so far since late last night/this morning.  This is my perfect kind of weather- cool and rainy- great for snuggling up with a blanket and a good book!  Just wish I had more time to read!  Dea  68th Terr. and Oak.

1.7" of rain since 5 am north of Leavenworth, lots of lightening and thunder, lost electric three times, hae 2 pretty good size branches down, wind is blowing hard, leaves are falling and it is sweatshirt weather for sure. I am sure this isn't a good omen for those of us who aren't hoping for a hard winter.

Gary, If Ike keeps its projected path, are we going to see even more rain out of that system?

I think Gustav turned the "rain switch" on, we have had some precip. fall from the sky here in St. Joe since last Tuesday!
This has been an awesome morning, I'm glad there was not too much severe weather, as it is a school day and severe weather just before and/or just after schools start could be problematic, As for this Hurricane season, Cuba and its neighbors are really taking it on the chin...
